Fletcher vs. SIPA vs. SFS - need help badly!
Pinkman replied to supbla20's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I think the perception that Fletcher isnt as quantitative as SIPA or SAIS is a little misleading. Fletcher allows the program to be tailored. You want a quant focus, its up to you to get it in your program. -

Plenty of scope to learn a language at Fletcher. http://fletcher.tufts.edu/Academic/Foreign-Language-Requirement/ForeignLanguageinfo I was concerned too but I got some good reassurances from current students and Fletcher itself. Also in at SFS, but the cost is simply too much. I love the program but I am unconvinced how much better it is then Fletcher. So I confirmed for Fletcher Can't speak to SIPA as I didnt get in but I have heard mixed things whilst researching. -
Thanks for the insight guys. I submitted my deposit yesterday so definitely confirmed. Are you confirmed or still evaluating? Supbla, I'm just hoping you have impossibly high standards in terms of cuteness!!

How to approach the topic of asking for more funding?
Pinkman replied to Pinkman's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Yeah, agreed. Fletcher is definitely my first choice over SFS, Elliott, UCSD and IPS but UCSD offered me a full scholarship with stipend so I'm definitely debating right now. I think its probably better to be honest in these situations, especially as I'd hate to impact someone else whose first choice is the school I'm negotiating with and isnt my first choice. -

Government Affairs 2013 Wrap Up - Final Decisions!

Hate to sound arrogant but looking at these threads and the SAIS acceptances, I really am shocked at not being admitted! Congrats to everyone though. -
How to approach the topic of asking for more funding?

So I just got off the phone with GWU Elliott. Apparently, they are very unlikely to reverse any decisions in relation to funding already made. However, they did say I or anyone else can write to them BEFORE APRIL 20TH explaining how increased funding will permit you to attend GWU Elliott over another school. I have significant funding from MSFS, Fletcher, UCSD and Harris so I definitely will give this a shot. The letter needs to be addressed to the Director of Admissions, Jeff Miles. Also, no TA positions are available for MA students, which is complete bullshit. -

Planning to talk to MSFS, Harris, Elliott and Fletcher this week. For some reason, I'm most optimistic for Fletcher. -
Absolutely ridiculous they are still making me wait for a decision. I sent them a strongly worded email detailing how they've unnecessarily added to the stressful time for applicants. No excuse to have such delay, especially as they offer rolling admissions and the newsletter says a decision will be reached and communicated to you in 2 weeks. That was dated in Feb.

Admitted students/Open Day thoughts
Pinkman replied to Clay Made's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Not sure why it would be inappropriate. Your decision completely. If his involvement is important to you, you should definitely bring him along. -
Solid stuff thanks! I was speaking to friend in the program today and she basically confirmed that MIT have pulled out. You can still take classes there but the process is ridiculous. While at Harvard, its a simple form to be filled out. At MIT, You have to ask the professor for permission to audit the course first, and then do an independent study at Fletcher. Apparently its very doable, BUT ONLY if you have a professor at MIT who is amenable. It seems like a major issue right now.

APSIA had some great stuff on their site.

When is a good time to start approaching admissions about this? -
Would be great if people could post their thoughts! I dont think I'll get the chance to participate.

Not comparing the schools but the Harvard name applies to both. Each could help someone with their career if the circumstances were right. WWS yes but the selectivity of HKS has been debated ad nauseum so I'm not getting into that again. I just wanted to rid of the misconception that its good to go to Harvard with $120k bill despite because 1) its Harvard and 2) the brilliance of being selected by a school thats selective over a program like Elliott with a great aid package. Its insanity.

Anyone else using the 'reach out to current Elliott students' event on Monday?

1. Alumni network at other schools are just as strong, it really depends on the area you want to focus on. You want to work in domestic issues in the US, then yeah, I would say HKS has a strong alumni. But if you want to work on international issues, Fletcher, SFS, SAIS are all better/just as good. 2. The faculty is impressive. You know where else its impressive? Every top policy school in the country! 3. This is a complete insult to everyone else who has worked hard to get to whatever school they're at now. 4. You get the Harvard name on your resume through the extension school too. Perhaps people should spend $$$ on that too.
-
What are you talking about? You criticize HKS and then commend it as the best policy school around. It IS NOT the best policy school around. WWS, Maxwell, Georgetown, Duke, GSPP are all very good schools and in some areas better then Harvard. The only thing Harvard has that has no close second, is name recognition. There's a difference between what you're saying and the actual truth. There is SO much disservice being done to future applicants. I loved reading through these forums at the beginning of my application cycle and a lot of it was absolutely crucial in my decisions. I would hate some applicant to read this and then mortgage their immediate future for a name, Its irresponsible to write stuff like this.

Guys, I think this was the forum you were looking for http://gmatclub.com/forum/

Thanks! Yeah definitely, I'm happy with the results. Just a little confused by SIPA. Their letter was very personalized (I worked for one of their professors NGO and they were aware of that in the letter) but then to remark I needed some more work experience was very inconsistent lol Fletcher is definitely a great school so I'm happy to have been accepted. Where are you leaning?
-
Just got dinged by SIPA. Ridiculous, I have 3 years work experience and was informed to reapply with more work experience. The letter seemed quite personalised but I dont understand how they can want more work experience. Good luck to everyone else.

It appears that I wont be able to make it to Boston during that week either, which is a shame. So would definitely appreciate your insight as well Dani! I expect to get on that spreadsheet this weekend. Hopefully everyone will find it useful. Thanks!

That is ridiculous really. Every other school has released decisions. Why are they taking so long?
