Rankings should be a tool to indicate research strengths etc. But the numbers seem a little out of kilter across different reporting sites. I'm making my decision based on current job placements, research opportunities, department culture etc.

I don't know why you were downvoted but I've upvoted and love you already. My thoughts: your chances are as good as anyone. You'll want to deflect attention from your bad grades in the Statement of Purpose.

They've offered a small reimbursement of flights but it wouldn't cover additional visa fees, international fees, return fares. It would be a 22hr flight, so maybe 2 days travel in total to get there. It could blow out my relocation costs. Also, I'm trying to finish my thesis. I can't delay it. The timing is rather sucky. I'm having a skype chat with professors from both universities. Oh I wish I were a rich person...

Can anyone tell me how critical it is to visit the open day...I'm stuck in another country and it's not feasible, although I want to make a good impression (I've already been accepted).

You didn't pay for a service. You paid for the privilege of having someone read your file and make a decision about your potential for grad school. When and how they release that decision isn't up to you because you are not a customer. Edited: I'm screwing up my grammar because I'm tired.
