UW Milwaukee admits

I've been offered a TAship and an award, pending approval, but no indication of the amount. -
I'm bumping this thread. My biggest fear is that, at graduate level, my GPA will be insufficient, I will unmasked as an imposter, and I will be dismissed from the program.

Sounds like you have a similar specialization as me. I didn't apply to Brown although I did consider it because of Cayley. I can see why you have made that choice. Well done! -

Honestly, my initial response was "oh sad." But really, that was a terribly selfish response especially since I have three admits (and to two of my top choices) and one waitlist already. So my response will now be: CONGRATULATIONS! and fingers crossed for those who really want and deserve Iowa. I'm rooting for you. -
Yes and no. It does depend on the industry. It also depends on gender. I'm grateful I have no kids or partner. It makes my transition so much easier, at least as a woman. I am aware however my earning capacity is less than a man's. It's unfair but it also means it is critical that I receive the best funding offer possible to offset any possible debt. That said, I'm in great admiration of you. It is so heartening to see "older" people (and let's be honest you are not old!) live their dream. It's encouraging. When I was teaching I much prefered the older students - they were easier to deal with and more engaging in class. Edited for grammar.

Oh bummer. I shouldn't be sad since I've already received offers from two top ten programs. It's selfish of me! I did like the look of their program. ETA: Can you tell me what your area of specialization is? -

Can I ask when you heard from UIowa? -
You know what? I'm probably going to start a fight here. But there is only one decent star trek series. TNG.

Mine hasn't changed at all. It still says "awaiting decision." -
Acceptance Freakout Thread

New media poetics and 21st century poetry and its intersections with gender and sexuality. I've just posted my stats on the results board - with a confession of errors in my writing sample. -
Acceptance Freakout Thread

I'm wait listed at Minnesota! I'm surprised and humbled. I don't deserve this especially when I see people on this forum with greater acuity than my little self. -
I guess my point is that my professional experiences are transferable to the academia. Hence why I mentioned them in my SOP - it seems to have worked. I wouldn't say "I have work experience and therefore I know how to manage a schedule." But I would say: "My professionalization in the field of X allowed me to develop expertise in A, B, and C. Such skills are also vital in the academic field of Z." Also, about the Native American box. If you feel connected to your indigenous heritage, then yes you should tick that box. In my country you would be considered indigenous. And wonderfully so.

I've never wanted to know a rejection so badly. -
You have my instant respect. Age worried me too - in some respects, I'm already considered too old in my current industry. However, let's be honest: 1. We have work experience. 2. We understand schedules. 3. We don't know what a 40 hour week is. 80hour - no probs (actually, in one of my gigs, I worked 24 hours). 4. We know what we want. If you want I can send you my SOP.

It's strange, they've added that extra line...I wish they would hurry up and reject me. -

Warning: stupid question pending. What makes Ivy Leagues so special? Are they considered more prestigious and more marketable than say other top research facilities. But is it the Ivy League Brand that should trump all other considerations? I applied to UPenn because it seemed like a suitable fit, good research happenings etc. Disclosure: I'm an international and offered a place at UPenn. -

I have confidence that you will be fine. I'm not going to say be yourself, if by being yourself entails nudity. But be as close to your normal state of being as possible without actually being arrested.
