Questions to Ask
Porridge replied to callmelilyb's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
-What sundry administative fees am I responsible for? -What competitive funding is available after 5 years? Do English grads tend to be successful in securing this funding? -Am I responsible for Summer school fees? (if applicable) -What extracurricular activities (readings/workshops) are available through the department? -
For me: 1 Focused SOP and WS (these two are both vital). The WS is in my field of interest. 2. LORs 3. GPA and Masters (I will shortly have 2) 4. GRE - Appalling Maths score. Good verbal. Meh writing. My age: 35. gap year between under and graduate - 9 years. Professional expertise in the field I want to academically specialize in: 9years. Acceptances: heaps, in top 10 and also excellent state schools. Rejections: None so far, although I cannot wait for that rejection from Buffalo. Point is? Luck maybe, but also strategize. I did. And it paid off. Also do not let anyone tell you that you cannot do this. I had many people poo my desires and my response was a kind flick off.

In the same boat. But it looks as if they are posting rejections. -

It's badly worded but no. What they mean is you will receive a living stipend AND an almost full tuition waiver. -

Oh, I see. You might be right. Being an international, I anticipate that I will not be offered first year funding anyway. -

So roughly 13,500 dollars stipend (9 months). I wonder if the 200 dollars is per semester or per year. ETA: And no mention of Summer funding. "An almost full tuition waiver" sounds ominous too. -

0% Confidence of Acceptance

Don't lose hope. I do wonder if you have targetted the right schools for your interests. I don't know much about American studies but I would suggest IF you are unsuccessful this year, to look at the following places. Iowa. Nebraska. WUSTL. Maryland. From my research, these places have opportunities for DH. ETA: UWisconsin-Milwaukee And possibly UWisconsin-Madison. -

I've flown numerous times. I love and hate flying. Petrified the plane will crash. In part because I've seen too many Seconds from Disaster/Mayday/Air Crash Investigation episodes. -

What is the appropriate ettiquette to decline offers? I've already accepted one offer informally, but I should I wait for the official acceptance before I decline my other offers? ETA: I don't want to wait too long because it's not fair for those on the waitlists. -

English! No, I haven't heard a peep. I only discovered the website response because there was an admission report on the Grad Cafe results board. -
