  2. Good to know, GeoDUDE and tulips. I have two great worries for this application season. 1) I will get acceptances without funding but no GRFP, and 2) I will get all rejections but will receive the GRFP. At least now I can not worry about the second.

  7. I'm curious... what exactly would happen if someone was awarded the fellowship but wasn't accepted to any schools? Obviously you can't receive it if you aren't enrolled anywhere, but really, what would someone do? Call up the programs he/she was rejected from and ask them to reconsider due to the funding? I feel like this isn't likely to happen, but it's a possibility.
  8. Haha there are indeed too many OSU's. I applied to two different programs there. Both are high on my list... I really hope I get accepted! Corvallis seems like an awesome place to live, too. Congrats again!
  9. Congrats, mayanway! By OSU, do you mean Ohio? My current advisor got his PhD there. He really enjoyed it! Also a belated congrats to Enhydra. I'm so happy for all of you guys who earned acceptances so far!
  10. I'm not in your field (although archaeology is so cool and I almost decided to pursue it as an undergrad). However, from my experiences in my own field, programs that interview generally state this somewhere on their website in the prospective/future students section. One exception to this was UTK, which didn't say anywhere that they do interviews, but on the weekly seminar calendar, a Friday is marked as graduate recruitment weekend. However, I can't be certain that means everyone will be interviewed prior to being admitted. FIU also does a recruitment weekend, but they don't invite everyone they are considering for admission, and it's not listed on the website (I got this info from my POI). Another of my programs doesn't interview, and doesn't make note of this anywhere. I have seen a few programs specifically state that they don't do on campus interviews. So to summarize, if there is no specific mention of an interview weekend on the program's website, there's a good chance they either don't interview or only interview some people (perhaps those they aren't sure about). The best way to find out for sure would be to email or call the department secretary and ask.
  11. Vene, are you generalizing the examples posted in this thread only, or are you making generalizations about men and women and why they flirt TA's in general? I am hoping just this thread, because I am quite certain that both types of situations are applicable to each gender. Could you briefly describe the content of the second link? Google books will not show it to me. As for your first link, I don't think it is very useful. Aside from the article not even mentioning what journal or university the study was associated with (which as far as I'm concerned means it's completely fabricated with no citation or information for us to verify its legitimacy), self-reported information isn't always reliable. People lie (even when anonymous) and something like being organized is highly subjective. Given a survey about organization, I would probably say my desk is organized even though it looks like a bomb went off, simply because I know what's on my desk and the approximate location of everything.

  13. I loooooove those crunchy nature valley bars, but it's exactly like that gif! I make such a mess. I can just imagine someone eating those in class... the crinkling of the wrapper, followed by a tear, and then the gentle sound of granola raining all over the desk and floor. And that's before the eating begins.
  14. I got that second application in at OSU to the Wildlife Science program. Now I'm wondering if the Environmental Science program has all of my transcripts. ES required official copies mailed in, with all of them mailed together in one big envelope along with my TA application. So I have undergrad and grad transcripts from my current university. I requested transcripts at the beginning of the fall semester so I could scan and upload them to various applications. My transcripts came in two separate envelopes. When I requested them for my OSU application, I got one envelope. I contacted the registrar, and they told me that both were in the envelope, and that if I had received two separate envelopes in the past, it was a mistake. So WS requires uploaded transcripts. So I requested my latest transcript to scan, and once again, I received two envelopes. Now I'm concerned. The ES department says they have everything, but I'm still worried about it, like they didn't realize there should be two transcripts. Ugh.

  16. Something like this happened to a friend. She was on her way somewhere on foot (I don't remember where), and some lady hit her with her minivan in the crosswalk while making a right turn. It was completely her fault. My friend had the right of way (the street crossing signal was on walk) and I'm sure the woman didn't even look when she made the turn. She didn't hit her hard and there wasn't any hospitalization required, but the lady actually put in her report to the police that my friend ran into the side of her minivan. Another car accident story... I was in stop and go traffic one day, and I could see the woman behind me in my rearview mirror taking on her cell phone. Every time we moved a little, she would creep closer and closer before breaking. She finally hit me and we pulled into a parking lot to see if their was any damage. She jumped out, looked at the front of her car only (she didn't do much as glance at me or my car), then proclaimed there was no damage and that she was leaving. Granted, she didn't hit me hard and she only left a tiny scratch on my bumper, but I was really, really pissed that she wasn't even remotely concerned that there could be damage to my car. I used so many words while yelling at her...
  17. During the brief time I tried out dorming as an undergrad, I also brought my laundry home. I initially went home every other weekend to visit friends and work, so I'd do my laundry on campus the weekend I stayed. It was fine the first time, but after that people would just put their laundry in the washer and not come back for hours. Almost every washer would be full of clothes and done with its cycle. Plus the dryers didn't work well, so I'd spend so much money just trying to get my clothes dry. About halfway through the semester, I started going home every weekend and I'd bring my laundry. I actually ended up doing everyone's laundry at home, not just my own. While reading through these, I remembered something from my pre-calculus class in undergrad. Since we often had snow days in the spring semester and occasionally flood days when the snow melted, the professor would give out take-home exams if class got cancelled on a test day to keep the class on track. Additionally, she had the policy that she would drop the lowest test grade. At the beginning of class (and it was also in the syllabus), she stated that if we had more than x number of take home exams, she wouldn't drop the lowest test grade. As it happened, we had lots of snow days, so we went past the max number of take homes to still have our lowest test grade dropped. The last test before the final was a take home (I think class was cancelled due to a water problem or something similar). Let me remind you that at this point, we already had enough take homes that we were no longer going to have our lowest grade dropped. Half the class failed it, and of those who passed, a lot of them still didn't do well (I don't know how, since it was a freaking take home test). So during our last class, the professor reminded us that our lowest grade wasn't getting dropped. Most of the class freaked out, and she agreed to drop the lowest in-class exam. Again, most of class freaked out, and a few people even said they planned on having our last take home dropped, so they didn't try on it and that's why they failed. When she refused, a bunch of them got together and went to the Dean before the final to try to force her to drop that last take home exam. I really don't understand people.

  20. When I got accepted to my masters program, I got a giant envelope in the mail. My mom was in the kitchen with me when I opened it, and I just read it to her. She was actually not excited at all... she had one of those "Oh no" kind of looks on her face, but still said something along the lines of, "Oh, well that's good." I immediately called her out on it, and she expressed her desire for me to get a real job. I think my dad was a little more excited. As for my LOR writers, they were out of town. One was in Florida on vacation for spring break, so I shot him an email with the subject "Guess who got accepted to grad school?" and then in the body, I simply wrote "ME!" The other was doing a field course in Belize, so I couldn't get in touch with him. However, I was headed for Belize the next day to do some backpacking and would be meeting up with the group of students at the end of the week. When I finally met up with them, the first thing I said to him was "I got accepted!" This time around, if I'm accpeted, I suppose I will immediate call everyone and scream into the phone, "I'M GOING TO BE A DOCTOR!"

  22. I understand the feeling. I have seen lots of this during this application cycle... people with no clue about who to ask for recommendations, what schools to apply to, how to narrow their research interests, etc., and especially with those who have mediocre profiles that want to know if they have chance at top programs. Those in particular get very offended by honesty and are hostile to recommendations to aim lower or get more experience. I got really annoyed when one person asked about potential masters programs they could apply to and I suggested mine, and then they were completely dismissive of it because the program's webpage had a a few typos. With an attitude like that, I would be surprised if they got in anywhere.
  23. One of my applications had a button that said "view checklist" and it would bring up a checklist of all the application items, plus a status update. The status update could be submitted, in review - graduate school, in review - program, and final decision made. That status has been in review - program for about a month, and I logged in today and the button is completely gone. I am terrified as to what that means.

  25. If I wasn't married, I would join the Peace Corps. This was a legitimate backup plan back when I applied 2 years ago, but I got accepted to some masters programs, so the plan was unnecessary. Seeing how I'm married now, going off for a few years to another country isn't a viable option anymore. Instead, I intend to find some seasonal bird jobs to strengthen my application for next year. I'm already applying for summer bird jobs (I need a summer job regardless of whether or not I'm accepted to a PhD program), so I'm off to a good start I guess!
