  1. I just submitted my first application to Northwestern And the waiting has just begun.
  2. Is it ok if I had to use a quotation in my SOP? If so, how do I cite it? Is it ok to simply that person x stresses that "xxxx"?
  3. For those of you who're submitting a cluster and/or a diversity statement, how long should it be?
  4. Is MasterCard a credit card? Sorry if this sounds so ignorant, but we're not used to online payment here. The school website says only credit cards are permitted, so I thought I should ask before it's too late.
  5. Same here. I can't get myself to revise my writing sample. I hate it. And reading what people post about the kisses of death makes me certain that there is no chance for me to get through such a complicated process. I wonder how people get acceptances.
  6. Are SOPs written in the same format as the WS? You know, double space, 12 font?
  7. Guys, is there a list of academic journals (Comp. Lit) that accept papers from grad students?
  8. If GRE is not required, how do you think they decide who deserves to get to the second round?
  9. Well. I'm freaking out too. Do you think it's risky to submit a 10-11 page of WS when the school requires 15? I feel that there is no need to apply with such a short paper.
  10. Does anyone know approximately how many days take the ETS to send a score report? And are schools generally ok if there is a day or two delay in receiving scores?
  11. How do I describe my knowledge in French on my CV? I mean if it is elementary, should I write "Elementary", "Basic", "Beginner"...?
  12. I have a somewhat similar concern about the number of works cited. I really don't know whether I'm using too many or too few. Would 14-18 references be adequate for a 10-15 page paper? I'm sorry I didn't answer your question, but we can wait for someone to answer mine and yours
  13. Guys, I know the font and size format, what about the margins? I used the default margin for my paper and I'm afraid it's not what is required
  14. Same is here, nothing seems to be done. I'm afraid I'll miss my first deadline, although I hope not cuz I'm only applying to 3 schools. I know it doesn't look good but I'm still hopeful, "Who knows"?
  15. BunnyWantsaPhD, I think the personal statement is as you just said "talk about family/cultural influences that shaped your interests... then the academic statement talked about the coursework". In my personal statement I talked about my background, general info about previous education, any jobs that you did which improved your research skills or inspired you to do what you're planning on doing, if you had any unique experience (scholarships, prize...). That's how I see a personal statement. A Statement of purpose would surely focus on specific courses that you took and inspired you, MA thesis (if any), and your research objectives.Hope this helps
  16. I don't think I dare look at my writing after I have submitted my apps. I'd feel that I should have written every word differently.
  17. Is it for their English and Comp. lit programs? I'm applying to their comp. lit but it's not mentioned on their admissions page, or I might have missed it??
  18. That's what I thought. Thank you for the advice and good luck to all of us
  19. I asked a similar question before about schools that say GRE is not required, but "highly recommended". Why wouldn't they just say it's required? I'm afraid it will negatively affect my application if I don't submit it, and at the same time I'm sure it'll hurt my application if I submit it cuz I really sucked at the test
  20. Thank you guys for responding. I have another question about language proficiency, what is the difference between (Fair, Beginner, Poor, and Basic)? What is the best way to refer to language proficiency on CV?
  21. Hi everyone, a question about conferences on CVs: I had a paper that was accepted at a conference that was canceled due to the "revolution". Now they decided to get it done but it will be held in Feb. Is it ok to list it on the CV? Please say yes...!
  22. If a school says that GRE is "not required but highly recommended", would it hurt my application if I don't submit it?
  23. Thank you so much for this. I really needed that. I've been depressed for the whole week and still just because I knew that my plans to apply this year would all fall apart if I didn't score well on the test. And I have to confess that I'm really bad at memorizing new words, so If I don't get a decent score this time, I won't have any better chances in retaking it, which will make my dream of studying abroad impossible. I'm sorry if I depressed you or something but I needed to talk. I'm taking the test this Thursday, so please y'all pray for me
