  1. Hi there, would anyone suggest a book or two books about literary criticism. I need to read more about literary theories and I can't find a simple direct book, something like a quick guide if you know what I mean. Thanks
  2. Thank you so much. It is stressful indeed. I'll see if I can get it done. If not, then maybe better for me to start focusing on other aspects of my applications.
  3. The problem is that I'm writing a paper which most likely won't fit as a writing sample. That's why I'm not encouraged to finish it. Every time I start working on it, I keep telling myself that I should be doing something else right now. I hate to realize so late that I had enough time to write a good piece and I couldn't use that time wisely.
  4. Thank you so much proflorax for your advice. I really feel so stressed nowadays and I feel that my concern with enhancing my CV is really taking all the time, and I'm afraid that I run out of time and I end up submitting a terrible writing sample and SOP. I appreciate your advice
  5. Don't you guys feel overwhelmed by all the stuff that should be done before we start applying? I have this feeling that I want to go to each conference that I hear about then I find that I don't have enough time for everything. I sometimes wonder if I should go to any conference at all before application cycle begins.
  6. Hi, if your paper is accepted to a conference, but you couldn't actually present it, would you still include it in your CV? How? Thanks guys, and best of luck to all those who'll be presenting
  7. Ok, My first conference presentation ever is a few weeks away and I'm freaking out. I'm the kind of person who feels embarrassed very easily. So, what kind of embarrassment should I expect in my first conference? I don't want this experience to be a nightmare .
  8. If the conference is willing to publish presented papers but in case one pays for it, should I pay them to publish my paper anyway, or should I just present it and then look for a publisher? I'm afraid of not being able to find a publisher after I say no to the conference condition for publishing...
  9. I have a question about documentation, since we'll be writing writing writing for a long time. I get confused when I quote details about the biography of a certain writer. I mean, how do you cite general information such as birth date/place, works, awards...etc.? Do I have to document every single sentence in this case? Or should I include a reference at the end of my paragraph? Knowing that all the information I need about the writer's life could be in one source. Thank you fellas
  10. Good for you. I'm having a huge block, can't get any writing done. And whenever I start thinking about rewriting my PS or starting a new writing sample, I fell like I still have ages till the application process begins. I know time flies, but I'm just trying to find an excuse for my procrastination. I guess talking about our plans on this forum is more encouraging than with one's self.
  11. I keep stopping by the forum every day and night and I see no new posts at all. Where are you Fall 2014 applicants? I guess this is a stage that we all need some encouragement, something that keeps you working hard until you're sure that you're ready to apply. I hope all is going great with you guys

  13. Proflorax, this is more than helpful. Thanks
  14. I have a few questions about the call for papers: 1) If they accept your submission, do you have to pay to get your work published? If so, how much? 2) How do you choose among all those posters? Sometimes you feel like your paper matches a number of cfps, how do you decide which is better, in terms of reputation, prestige,...etc. 3)Why many journal, if not all, say that they are not going to return your paper in case they don't accept it? 4)Can you submit the same paper in two different languages to two different journals? Thanks...
  15. First, congratulations ! I guess reading your abstract will do the job since it already has a brief introduction about your topic and the conclusion. And as for your bio, I think you may include: your name, affiliation, specialization and ... I guess that should be fine. If you have only 5 minutes then you don't need to include more details. I hope that helps and best of luck.
  16. PM sent. Best of luck , and don't worry: no plagiarism.
  17. I guess moving from another country is easier than moving from within the US. I experienced living in the US for one year and it makes your life much easier when you know that you can only pack 2 suitcases of your favorite clothes, important little things that you use all the time and can't live without, in addition to some of your books. You'll have to rent a furnished apt or start with the basics until you're settled. So, you don't have to drive across the country with all your stuff and worry about time and money, you just leave it to the airline company. My two cents
  18. Hi y'all. Can anyone explain the difference between state schools and other schools? I mean how they're different in terms of funding and how easy/hard to get in. Thanks
  19. I guess since you changed the content, the title will be different. So, why not? I've seen some people who write different articles, with very slight modifications that they all seem to belong to the same topic. It's like you decided to split your paper into two parts, I think it's ok.
  20. Does anyone here knows how a typical CV should be like? Does anyone mind uploading his/her CV, just to be a reference for next year applicants?
  21. I did that a week ago and I got my first submission accepted. Good luck to you too...
  22. Wow ! Thanks a lot for that. So many good tips. I feel scared since it's my first time and I'm not good At ALL at mingling with new people. I like it more when people come and talk with me. What makes it worse is that even if I get a conversation started, I never keep it going. I guess I'll have to work on that sooner or later.
  23. So, basically a presenter would read the whole paper? I was thinking that I'd have to make a specific abstract or summary to read it in the conference, in addition to the full paper. That would be easier I guess, since I so much hate writing abstracts. I'm glad that I had my first abstract accepted at a conference in a respected Egyptian university, although I'm a little worried cuz it's their 1st conference in the field of English. Anyway, better than nothing.
