  1. And yet another thing to be paraoid about... ;-) Congrats! I figure at this point any positive steps are very happy news. Thanks for sharing, and good luck!
  2. And congrats to catalavaino! Sorry I missed you; I'm on mobile.
  3. A big congrats 1Q84 and LCB! That's awesome!
  4. While I agree with Ramus and kurayamino re: STEM-ization of the humanities, I must also echo ComeBackZinc's sentiments. Just recently I found a fantastic comp syllabus posted on Academia.edu that was a tremendous help as I put my semester together. As someone who does research in pop culture, it's one of the better ways to find papers/works cited refs on more recent phenomenon without the 3-5 year "proper" publication delay. Basically, with all the hullabaloo in the journal world about IP and public access, it's nice to have another forum where researchers can share their work with others in the field... Even if it gives me additional (unnecessary) anxiety.
  5. Yeah, it's not gospel for me or anything; it's just super annoying that of course now cities aren't showing up for US searches, even though I'm getting them for searches outside the US. And the whole being searched by someone in East Lansing back in December has, of course, only heightened this anxiety.
  6. Does anyone know if it's possible to pull city data from Academia.edu? I've had tons of recent US hits to my profile and papers, but there's no city listed for most of the U.S. searchers.
  7. Ditto. CONGRATULATIONS, hypervodka! What an amazing start to the application cycle!
  8. My department chair sent this around over the weekend, and I thought it might be of general interest: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/01/26/where-have-all-english-majors-gone
  9. Preach. I had to come to terms with this after researching programs and realizing for what I want to study most of the US News top 25 programs simply weren't a good fit for me, whether or not I wanted them to be. I'd rather study what I love than get rejected from another dozen programs based on lack of fit (or study something I hate if I did manage to trick an adcomm into admitting me).
  10. This is going to be a fantastic resource when results start flooding in. Thanks so much, thepriorwalter! Again, not to overburden, but is it worth adding a rejection column? Or maybe as a separate spreadsheet?
  11. Thanks, catalavaino. All the wonderful Ohio people on the board are just going to make a rejection sting more... . I'll need to start a rejects forum when results start rolling in.
  12. Thanks, toasterazzi. That does provide some solace. Congratulations, thepriorwalter!
  13. For those of us in OSU-limbo, does anyone recall when waitlists/rejections have formally gone out in the past? Not that the past is a wholly great predictor, but it could provide some solace for those of us with fingers and toes tightly crossed.
  14. Awesome; thanks for sharing. I wish they had the whole session online! Having just returned from a conference (and more than 48 hours without internet), you scared the crud out of me. Then I realized you were referring to Madison, not Milwaukee (where I applied). If last year continues to be predictive, it should be another couple of weeks before any of the places I applied start notifying. Anyway, congrats to all of the Madison admits!!!!
  15. In case anyone else is applying to UW Milwaukee, I just heard from the department that, "Decisions will be mailed out in mid-February."
  16. As my 161 V attests...
  17. Commiseration time from a fellow likely-reject of OSU (seriously tied as my top choice). It seems like I'm in a pretty similar situation (not great ug and first grad degree GPA, fantastic current grad GPA, just okay GREs, and over thirty). Don't give up hope just yet, though! This is my second app cycle in three years. I was fully shut out last time and have at least one acceptance at the moment, so there's definitely still time/hope. Good luck, and happy thoughts!
  18. Is the fourth OSU admit among us?
  19. Still "pending"... Thanks so much, and Congratulations again!
  20. A huge congrats to thepriorwalter and Ramus; OSU is a fantastic program (and one of my top choices, sadly). For those of us in limbo, where was your status updated? Buckeye link? Any details would be much appreciated. In any event, congrats again!
  21. Did anyone apply to Penn State? I'm an English applicant, but I plan to get a grad certificate in WGS. PSU was the only school I applied to that does dual PhDs. It's definitely a reach for me, but I was wondering if there were any other hopefuls out there.
  22. Ditto. And a huge congrats, sillyrabbit. I was so bummed I couldn't apply to USC. Not that I could get in, but I quote Halberstam like its my job... lol Also, re: American Studies, please do share! This was my home last time I applied despite sending equal AmStu and English apps. Despite dropping the AmStu programs this cycle, I'm still big on interdisciplinary work anyway, which had a huge impact on where I applied. It seems to be a trend in English generally.
  23. Congrats to you too, doc1! For all of us who have agonized over professor emails, this provided me at least some solace (or at least a good chuckle): http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=1047
  24. This is super random, but I may end up in a similar (albeit very odd) position. Our street abuts a green space being turned into a road. Construction is starting soon, and they may need tear down the whole street to make room. We officially find out at a meeting with the transportation department next week, but it's looking likely as they hand delivered letters to everyone on both sides of my street. If we do have to move I don't know when it will be, and with two dogs over 50 lbs I'm not sure where we could even go. Anyway, I get unneeded stress during an already stressful time. I'm sorry for all your upheaval! That really sucks, especially with the housing market in LB. Best of luck in your search!
