Eh, I would say the worst is not getting in anywhere, but that's just me.

AMAZING. I feel like I should have probably spaced these out to avoid eating a pint of ice cream later... -

Is anyone going to claim the BGSU acceptances? I'm dying over here... ETA: Just received the following e-mail in response to my query to the grad secretary, "Notifications should be going out by the end of next week. Let me know if you have any other questions." Being that two acceptances have been posted, I'm going to assume this is another no... -

If you don't mind, could you post a list (or PM)? I will say I did not look much in BC due to the high cost of living, but I checked out several programs in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba. I also avoided UToronto for a very long, complicated reason. Maybe I missed a school (or a program within a school)? Any info would be much appreciated! -

I really wanted to apply to Canadian programs, but I couldn't find any that were a good fit for my interests (probably because I'm an Americanist ). I didn't even bother with European programs; I've already moved from Hawaii to Massachusetts sans furniture, so I'm not looking to fly all my stuff across another ocean. -

Thanks, phigirl! I was wondering about that one myself. Also, I came home to the most kindly worded rejection letter I've ever received (and I am an authority on the subject) from Iowa. So, it's official, but they were really nice about it. -

I was finally able to fix my Iowa password, so I decided to check my status, saw a simple "Admission decision: Not Accepted" Thanks for the heads up, Iowa... -

Question to the group: I am planning to apply to a few English MA programs whose funding deadlines haven't passed yet because I'm not confident I'll receive any good news from PhD programs. My very well-vetted and recently updated writing sample is on film and literature, and I'm wondering if it's not "traditional" enough for an English app. I have another paper I could use that's purely literature-based and involves much more theor (psychoanaltic and postmodern), but I won't be able todo more than a final copy edit before it goes out. So... Should I stick with the one I've been using or try the new statement, which could be better for an English audience, but is no as well-refined?

Ditto. I'm surprised to hear the department is offering few courses, as they have essentially absorbed the American Studies Department, which is only in existence until current students graduate. -

Thanks, bfat and swagato! Don't be surprised if I start pressing all the acceptee for guidance. If i can get my recommenders to write a few more, I'm planning to apply to a couple English MAs. I have a great undergrad/MA institution, but my grades aren't amazing (in part because I went to a school known for grade deflation and in part because I worked throughout school and had a learning disability that went undiagnosed until I was in the workforce). I mean, it's still above a 3.0, but I can understand a school not wanting to take a chance on that. I have the same issue bfat mentions, with broad, but interconnected, interests. If I can swing it, two years "back in the saddle" to really focus things couldn't hurt. -

IDK if it will help, but if those of you with one acceptance are bumming, just think of those of us without ANY. I want to reapply, but there is clearly something very wrong with my app if not even one school wants me... -

I haven't heard that its losing its reputation, just that funding is hard to come by. -

If it were me, that's what I'd assume. Don't give up on CU Boulder yet, though. I heard they're not done. -

Thank you so much for sharing. This is torture. IDK what happened, but I was locked out of my account and can't access until I call Admissions DURING BUSINESS HOURS. Ugh. I haven't received any news from them, though, so I'm assuming it's a rejection... I'm sorry about BGSU! Good luck with your last two! -

I couldn't take it, so I called Florida. My exact question was, "have all admitted PhD candidates been notified?" The response, "No. We're still working on those." I thought my crazy could benefit the group... -

Don't worry, MA is a totally different ball game (trust me, I have one). Besides, you've already got two great options! No need to discount Florida yet. -

Has anyone heard anything about UNC Charlotte or Winthrop's placement for PhD programs? I'm going to apply to a couple MA programs site some really excellent placements; I was thinking about applying to these as well, but I couldn't find anything about where their graduates end up.
