  1. That's awesome news, skybythelight! Did you e-mail Paul Youngquist? And thanks for sharing your message; this way I'll know if I don't hear anything by next week I'm out.
  2. Congrats!!!! AMAZING program. For those of us still waiting, how did you hear?
  3. On the advice of an American Studies applicant, I called and simply asked if the department had any idea of when they would begin notifying PhD applicants. In one case some decisions had already gone out, so I asked if all accepted/waitlisted candidates had been notified. I called (from a number not listed on my app) rather than e-mailed so if I am annoying anyone they won't know who I am.
  4. Congrats to all the recent acceptees! AMAZING news!
  5. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
  6. Sadly, I'd be happy for a waitlist right about now. Best of luck to you!
  7. rems, you make me happy, both for the quotes above and the reminder that last night's episode of Parks and Rec was pretty awesome.
  8. That's how Brown is for me. It was too good of a fit not to apply, but I've never exactly had much faith in it coming through. I've also been extremely pessimistic about Chicago, to the point where I almost didn't send in my app. The only reason I finally submitted was because my professors had already e-mailed their recs. I'm not sure why, but for some reason Chicago has always seemed even more impossible than Brown, lol.
  9. Thanks, waparys, and congrats on your Delaware acceptance! No worries, the Michigan rejection was American Studies, there's hope for you yet!
  10. Thanks for the info on Boulder all! I have to say, that 200 applicants for 4 spots deal is not making me too optimistic about the odds at one of the last remaining schools at the top of my list that hasn't rejected me yet... *sigh*
  11. I love that! Thanks for the smile. It's like senior prom all over again.
  12. It's probably a bad idea to call a program and tell them, "just so you know, if you let me in, I'll definitely go there," huh? I am verging on that desperate...
  13. I did indeed. I didn't want to give my name, so I just asked if the department knew when they would start notifying. It seems like notifications will start next week but continue beyond that.
  14. I'm only applying to one Communication program, so I haven't been on this side of things much, but I contacted UMass today and asked when to expect decisions and they said the adcomm will start notifying by next week. Not sure that's helpful to anyone, but I thought I'd pass it along in case others were applying to UMass Amherst. Good luck to everyone!
  15. That sucks, I'm sorry! I feel like I should form some sort of organization for Michigan/Minnesota rejects.
  16. I was just thinking about this! I first applied to grad programs in 2005, and it was actually easier in some ways. All of my schools were snail mail, so I would be stressed out all day waiting for the mail, then once it came that was it for the day. Now it's a much more consistent anxiety. I think it also helped that I was in school and working (instead of just in an office), so I didn't have time to just ruminate on things. It's a definite give and take, though, because it's so nice to have people to discuss the process with who actually understand it! Also, I LOVE that Purdue said that! It's making me feel better about Chicago, lol.
  17. I'm sorry notaprettygrrrl. Hey, at least they seemed to like you more than me I got an e-mail on Monday with the subject line "UM/AC Letter" and the only text was "Please see the attached letter." I hope they were a wee bit more delicate with the folks they put off until today!
  18. Ditto. I know exactly how you feel, CP3 (three rejections, two assumed rejections, and no acceptances). What makes things ever worse for me is that I can only go to grad school if I'm fully funded, and of the programs I have yet to hear from only two assure funding (one of which is Brown, which I'm not even pretending I have a shot at). I'd LOVE to go to any of the programs I'm applied to, but my biggest fear now isn't just not getting in at all, it's getting in but not being able to go because of money. I don't even want to think what mental state I'll be in if I get rejections from both funded programs. *sigh* I totally understand your stress-induced nausea and sleeplessness, HigherEd. Hopefully thinking of us with dwindling hope for this app cycle will help you feel a little better, though!
  19. Anyone else dreading Valentine's Day? It seems to be notorious for rejections.
  20. Honestly, I'm (probably fruitlessly) hoping for a Chicago MA consolation prize. I already have an MA in American Studies, so I'm trying to rationalize to myself and my boyfriend that a second MA is more worth my time than another year in the workforce. Yup, 0% confidence is appropriate.
  21. I'm also originally from out west, but have been living in Mass since 2007, so if you need any recommendations of good places (namely delicious ice cream and Indian food) just let me know! Congrats to you too, Imogene, you're definitely off to a great season! That is absolutely wonderful! Congrats to the other UMass acceptances as well.
  22. CONGRATULATIONS! Amazing program and amazing area! And thanks for the positive message for the acceptance-less folks out there.
  23. TripWillis: I know it started out in a very unusual way, but I think you and I could have a very interesting discussion (also, I am mildly fascinated with Detroit). If you think others would like to participate let me know and I can start a new thread. Otherwise, I'll PM you. Now, back to the matter at hand... Thanks, jazzy. Your first statement almost gives me hope! That being said, I get the feeling I'm going to need a bottle of antacid the last week of Feb.
  24. Are you from Hawaii? My avatar is a bit deceptive, as I am from Hawaii but defected when I graduated from high school.
