  1. Congrats on your acceptance! My thesis advisor went to Chicago, and I've heard the buzz about the ultra-competitiveness as well. But, as dazed says, it really is a personal preference and where you feel comfortable. The program is nothing short of spectacular, so it's definitely worth checking out at the very least. Personally, I didn't think I'd have much chance to get in (and it's looking like I didn't), but applied anyway because it was a really good fit for my interests. If you've been through the faculty page they have a ridiculous record of people joining right out of grad school and staying there for their entire careers, so that always led me to believe it has to be a pretty good environment (to say the least). Good luck with your decision!
  2. Yeah, I gave in and called. They said they will probably start notifying as early as the end of this week/beginning of next, but end of next week for sure. Ugh. I really don't want to get my hopes up because I doubt I'll get in, but the faculty is amazing, it's a perfect fit, their placement rates are ridiculous and I would actually really like to live in Pittsburgh! Sigh...
  3. You're the best! Adcoms aside, I know if I were applying to Wayne State I'd really appreciate that. Congrats on your acceptances!
  4. Thanks, thinkagain. I mean, Chicago was expected, but it would be really nice if I had SOME positive news.
  5. Nope... two actual rejections and one implicit (Chicago seems to have sent out acceptance e-mails today and my inbox is empty). Seriously, if I got a WL at this point I'd be thrilled. I'm pathetic.
  6. We can probably assume that if we don't hear from Chicago by end of day we're not in, right? I really hate that some programs ssend out rejections a month after acceptances. Is that torture really necessary?
  7. I don't know if you had the same experience, Two Espressos, but I find it incredibly frustrating that in the HOURS upon HOURS of research I did I still managed to miss 2-3 programs that would have been a great fit.
  8. This probably isn't a good thing, but I'm actually putting together a "look into" list of programs I should research in the event I don't get in anywhere.
  9. Three is definitely several where apps are concerned...
  10. Thanks for letting us know cicada! I'd be lying if I didn't say my heart dropped a bit when I saw this though. Oh well, at least one more rejection I shouldn't have to wait much longer for.
  11. No word on the Michigan front. If I don't see anything posted on the results page by Friday I'll probably end up calling.
  12. Seriously. With no acceptances (or even waitlists) to fall back on, Mondays are becoming increasingly stressful (escpecially this Monday because notifications for at least 2 of the programs I haven't heard from started informing last year's applicants on the first Monday of Feb). I haven't slept in two days. If this keeps up I am most definitely going to lose my mind.
  13. Doubtful! Anyway, it looks like they don't notify admits until late February/early March. There are plenty of other places to stress about until show.
  14. Well the best I can pray for now is you getting in, turning down, and me, by some miracle, getting waitlisted. Here's hoping!
  15. Sorry to jump in, but are you applying to MCM at Brown? I went back and forth between that and American Studies. Between Michigan (American Culture called the first Monday of Feb last year), Pitt, Chicago, and UMass I'm not sure I'm going to survive the week. I guess it's good Vandy put me out of my misery early. I'm also looking into other programs in case I need another round... girl who wears glasses, I've been back and forth between English, Communication, and American Studies, so if you need any guidance let me know. However, I sincerely doubt it's going to come to that for you! ;-)
  16. Michigan notified accepted students on the first Monday of Feburary last year...
  17. I jusy saw two Vanderbilt acceptances on the results page... congrats to those who made the cut!
  18. Those are adorable! Yay Berners and German shepards! I'm such a sucker for pups. I love Berners, but I gotta say the lack of grooming on a Swissy is pretty great. Yes, congrats eaboo!!!! That's amazing!
  19. Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let us know when it's official!
  20. Yeah, you're dead on about large breeds being apartment dogs. My Swissy is go go go for 15 minutes then passes out for four hours. My boyfriend and I ended up just buying a place because it was impossible to find anyone who would rent to a large dog, even though he is a champion show dog! Meanwhile, my friends with loud, destructive chihuahuas can find a place anywhere! Ruby, dogs are wonderful in grad school. Such a help during those long nights of reading! I'm always thrilled when someon is familiar with Swissies, if you're ever looking for a breeder let me know!
  21. Sorry to take things off track, but I'm really keen on distracting myself right now... OhMySocks, what kind of dog do you have? I have a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog so I can sympathize. Not that I've dared to look up apartments yet, right about now I'm not sure if I'll get in anywhere!
  22. Oh, absolutely Ruby! I was just giving one scenario to give people applying to public schools hope.
