  1. This should probably move to a whole different thread, but I just had to throw in one note. I completely respect your opinion, and you make some very valid points. That being said, I find this issue interesting because I grew up in Hawaii where not only were white people the minority, but dealt with a substansial amount of harassment and discrimination (my high school had a lot of white military kids, who didn't want to be there anyway, but frequently still got the worst of it). Anyway, this is all an aside for reiterating that the system is flawed. Achievement is just as challenging for a white kid from Hawaii (or central Detroit or the backwoods of Louisiana) as minorities living in areas where whites are the majority. Like I said, just a note that I am completely open to taking to another thread. I just had to throw in that caveat because I think most people tend to forget about the little islands in the middle of the Pacific.
  2. SERIOUSLY. Keely, can I rent you out this summer to tell me what's wrong with my apps so I can fix it for next app cycle? Seriously. You crushed it. Congrats!
  3. Second that Brown question. When I submitted my app they said notification would arrive in 4-8 weeks, and it will be 8 weeks this Friday. Not that I think it will be anything other than a rejection...
  4. My BF and I live together, so I got his input on every place I considered. He's incredibly supportive (and actually really excited about the prospect of moving), but I know it won't be easy for him to either get approval to work at his job remotely or try to find a new job wherever we end up. However, either of those prospects is way more enticing than him dealing with me holing myself up in my office for another eight months while I work on yet another application cycle. I immediately followed completing my M.A. thesis with PhD program apps, and I'm not sure how much more of my anxiety he can tolerate.
  5. Not that I know what I'm talking about, but I specifically didn't apply to Wisconsin because they note on their website that they don't have as much funding as some other programs, so they can't assure funding for everyone they admit. I only remember because it seemed like an amazing program, and I absolutely would have applied if funding had been more certain.
  6. Jump! I am SO jealous! How did you hear? I'm thinking I should write and beg them to get my rejection over with at this point.
  7. I haven't filed the FAFSA. It's kind of a pain, and I don't want to deal with it if I don't get in anywhere. I figure if someone needs it to issue a formal acceptance they'll let us know... I'm noticing pretty much everyone applied to WUSTL, which is not making me feel good about my chances there. Sad, because their department seems amazing!
  8. Primarily through a lot of googling. It's definitely easier for some programs than others. For programs that didn't post percentiles, I spoke with my advisor about the program's placement history for a rough idea and went through the NRC data. Edit: Also, I noted where all of my POIs went while doing research on various departments. Of course this is completely anecdotal, but it definitely gave me a sense of where to direct my attention (and I came across a couple of programs I wouldn't have otherwise considered that way).
  9. Is Colorado REALLY going to wait until March? Most other programs with a 12/15 deadline have started notifying or are scheduled to this week...
  10. Is it as much about rankings as placement? I only applied to programs with excellent placement records, regardless of ranking, and that includes some "second tier" programs. As long as you can get a good job (or at least have a decent shot through alumni netowrking etc) the ranking doesn't seem to matter as much. That's not to say top programs don't have amazing placement, just that in looking for programs that were a good fit for my interests, I found a number of programs that aren't in the top 10, but do have great placement rates (like Pitt, Colorado, and UF).
  11. Another rejection (one of the American Studies programs). So much for that Monday morning optimism... good luck to everyone else this week!
  12. Congrats on Ohio State, Gwendolyn! I'm super jealous that you have a place to be next year. That's amazing!
  13. Here here! I hope it's the program I'm aslo waiting to hear from. Either way, best of luck!
  14. Thank you so much for this! I may need to PM you if I end up venturing in to a third app cycle...
  15. I know exactly how you feel, Swagato. I'm in a very similar situation myself and it's incredibly hard not to get down on yourself (it probably happens at least once a day for me). Here's holding out for Pitt...
  16. Congrats on your acceptance, YesPhDinHumanities! That's amazing! And thanks much for the information, it was really helpful.
  17. Again, REALLY upset about being out of up votes. bfat is right, this thread is fun again!
