  1. As all of my guy friends are so fond of saying, "thanks, Captain Obvious." I <3 vaguely reassuring things. They're so much better than the alternative, and one of the few calming things I have in my life at the moment.
  2. Thanks, Orbis. I'm expecting a rejection, but I thought I could check the page and just have it over with! Congrats on your acceptances, both awesome programs!
  3. Thanks M-L, and ditto to the Bearcat picture!
  4. I know this wasn't for me, but I love this sketch: http://www.hulu.com/watch/335970
  5. Well you definitely have something to show now! Even if nowhere else pulls through, a WL at UNC is NOTHING to scoff at! And you still have a good shot at getting off the WL from the sound of things! I don't think you have to worry about bringing the chat down (it is the 0% confidence thread after all). That being said. I'm sorry to hear about the rejections. I also worry that I squandered my first app cycle (the program I was admitted to was for MA/PhD, but I didn't get funding so I decided to go terminal MA), and now I'm not sure what's going to happen at this go-round. I really don't want to be a 40 year old grad student. :-/
  6. Thanks, Fayre! You and waparys are right, they must be talking about UIC because the only link I have for Chicago is the one you posted. I must have confused it with one of the other programs that rejected me.
  7. Congratulations It's (Not) About Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Congratulations Two Espressos!!!
  9. Okay, I'm officially an idiot, but I figured one of you could help me. For the life of me, I cannot find the link to the application status check page for Chicago. I could have sworn I've checked it before, but can't find it anywhere in my records or get to it through the website. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. With the recent rejections posted that found out by randomly checking the website, I figured I should just look and officially cross Chicago off the list. Does anyone have the link?
  10. I'm so glad one of my (probably many) typos was quoted twice. Yes, all friendly bets. In all fairness, it did take a few years. My MA wasn't funded, so I had to work full-time (two jobs for a period) while I finished it and, of course, they were a Murphy's law sort of few years. My boyfriend betted for me, though, and I have a nice, bound thesis now so all is well. Well, all except this whole not getting into a PhD program thing...
  11. Thanks for sharing, bfat! If it makes you feel any better, after my defense I found out there were bets going as to wether or not I'd actually finish mine. Good luck!
  12. That is AMAZING! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Out of up votes intextrovert, but YES! Anyone who has looked into Pitt, for example, has seen what ridiculous placement rates and resources they have, but US News puts them at #35.
  14. Congratulations!!!! What an amazing program.
  15. I have to echo this. Both the importance of placement and who you get advice from. One of my profs got her PhD from Brown and recommend I do a campus visit before I apply (they don't do that anymore), then suggested I look at Michigan State's American Studies Department, which is in the process of being dissolved. She's the chair of the English Department at a top public school, s she's no slouch, but I'm pretty sure she hasn't even thought about the admissions process (beyond LORs) since the early 80s.
  16. Seriously!!!!! It's going to be bad enough telling people I bombed at apps, but my parents may kill me if I don't get in anywhere (they paid for a couple apps for a Christmas present and I wasn't able to fly home for Christmas or Thanksgiving because I had to work on apps). Not to mention my relationship... I'm pretty sure if my bf and I would be in serious trouble if we didn't live together. The thought of locking myself away every weekend for six months to work on apps with a 2% acceptance rate is daunting to say the least.
  17. Our experiences seem very similar it's (not). I almost didn't get a Saturday test for the GRE because I had to coordinate with my bills, lol. I avoided the subject test completely. If have to apply again I might try to re-take the general, but I'd really have to weigh if it was worth all the time/money/stress. I'm not gonna lie, I may or may not be paying off a few Christmas presents I had to charge to make those 12/15 and 12/31 app payments.
  18. Yeah, that's (fee waivers) how I applied when I was an ug. Between studying for GREs, taking GREs, mailing GREs, paying app fees, requesting transcripts, etc... that all adds up really quickly.
  19. Congrats to all recent acceptees! It looks like some awesome schools sent out good news today.
  20. Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, it looks like MCM at Brown is notifying, but not American Studies. What's up with that?
  21. I have nothing to contribute. I just want to agree re: needing a job to be able to apply. Even with a job, with all the money I spent on apps I still haven't been able to afford news clothes/shoes in over a year. My coworkers are probably starting to wonder if I'm a hobo, lol.
  22. Sorry, I hope my post didn't come across as sassy! Back home we celebrate weird holidays that other states don't and don't celebrate some (otherwise) national holidays. Also, I've noticed that most of MA takes Patriot's Day and Columbus Day really seriously, but my home state and the state where I went to school never really observed them. Basically, I never know who celebrates what! If jazzy's school is open tomorrow maybe some schools will notify? It seems like quite a few notifications have gone out on Saturdays, so if offices are open there's no reason to to think it's possible. Also, skybythelight, I am jealous of your bakery job. Depending on which bakery in RI I might be REALLY jealous.
  23. Is Mass the only state that observes President's Day? I was expecting everything to be closed Monday. With the Pitt rejections being posted, I expect mine to arrive on Tuesday (no USPS delivery tomorrow).
  24. I will have to go to Oklahoma then I really am interested in learning, but, despite having a boyfriend with a Jewish grandmother, most of what I know seems to come from the Internet. Yes, I can totally sympathize with her! Surprisingly, I'd guess being black and from Japan is just as common as being white and from Hawaii. I only knew one other local white kid when I was growing up (and it turns of he was the product of his Japanese mom's affair with a white guy, his dad was Samoan). There are a lot (by a lot I mean 30% of the population) of white people in Hawaii, but they're nearly all military and usually aren't there more than 3-5 years max. It's very a definitely interesting society, one that I've found from my time on the mainland is completely contradictory to societal norms. Coming from a similar background, I would bet your sorority sister has some very interesting stories!
