Good Sign, Omen or Hallucination - All Are Welcome!

I believe it is a connection to the e-mailing/grading system for the university. -
Good Sign, Omen or Hallucination - All Are Welcome!
SLPjmar replied to Eager's topic in Waiting it Out
Is it a good sign that after a few weeks, I received an e-mail asking me to make a netID while the department reviewed my application (it was already reviewed by the graduate school)? Or am I just a dreamer? -

In my particular field, we can't work at all without a M.S./M.A. So if I don't get in (my goodness I hope that doesn't happen), I will be taking a year to travel, most likely in Europe. The next application cycle will be calling my name.

I almost feel like this forum is the only place where people TRULY understand my anxiety and neurosis, even though everyone in my cohort is going through the same exact thing. Maybe they're just better at hiding it?

How to rank/differentiate between programs
SLPjmar replied to gpb13's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thank you very much for clearing that up. I know some schools are virtually impossible (such as my undegrad institution) because they do not consider anyone with a GPA much lower than a 3.85. In those instances, I can't compete, no matter the other aspects of my application. -
How to rank/differentiate between programs

Can anyone elaborate on why UNC Chapel Hill is considered "impossible to get into"? When I reviewed all of their admissions literature, it seemed as though they were looking for competitive applicants, but not necessarily the top ones ONLY. Was I sadly misinformed? -

- DO NOT LISTEN TO OTHER STUDENTS. While some of the people in your cohort/program may have some great insight as they complete grad school applications, you may run into a few extremely neurotic ones. They boost the anxiety level to its highest point. If you have questions and want answers that are separated from emotions, go directly to faculty or staff members. It isn't worth being stressed over something that turns out to not be true.

I honestly feel so terrible for my boyfriend. I am a moody, anxious mess while waiting to hear back. Definitely no fun to be around.

SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants
SLPjmar replied to SJS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I find that to be so strange. Just because we have defined interests right now doesn't mean we aren't interested in learning even more. That just seems absurd to me. I indicated my strong interest in working with cochlear implants/AVT and I kind of think that makes me a unique applicant. Especially since I double-majored with Deaf studies, and held an important internship related to hearing loss. I also tied this into the reason I first became passionate about SLP: meeting and working with an implanted child. Sometimes I feel like we just drive ourselves crazy with what we should do/shouldn't do/should be/shouldn't be. If a school is going to turn me down for expressing enthusiasm and interest in a specific subset of speech and language, I'm not sure I'd want to go there anyway. -

It's so hard to figure out what's competitive and what isn't. Have you found out what the average GPA/GRE's are for the schools you applied to? -

None of the schools I applied to hold interviews. I was told they simply don't have the time or resources, since they receive hundreds of applications. That's why SOPs are so important; the admissions committee can get a sense of who you are without ever meeting you. Although I feel like I would be able to shine in an interview setting. Good luck! -
Just trying to prepare myself! Now I know Although I am sorry you received that particular e-mail.

Are any of you guys graduating with your B.S. this semester? Did you wind up applying to your undergrad institution for grad? -
What e-mail subject would they put for an acceptance?

If I get accepted (and because I have lost 55 lbs in the last 6 months), I am buying myself an entirely new wardrobe.

Fall back plans if no one accepts you
SLPjmar replied to la912's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I've thought about backup plans, but I truly can't think of another profession to go into. I guess that's what 4 years of intensive undergraduate conditioning gets you But I think I would re-focus on the GRE, since my scores were pretty average. I don't think that re-taking classes would really have an impact, because the lowest grade on my transcript is a B- (in A&P I). -

Let me know how it goes for you! It would be great if we both got in Are either of those your top choices? -
When to expect hearing back?
SLPjmar replied to madisonstarr's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I wish we were hearing back sooner. But after checking the bulk of last year's results, I think it's safe to assume that I won't be hearing back until the beginning of March (even though some deadlines were Jan. 15th). The timing is just SO unfortunate, because my birthday is around that time. The last thing I want is to be hearing bad news around that time. Also, it's so long to wait! -
I am so jealous of everyone who has heard back.
