  3. Hey MPAallday that's good you are still in the running and congratulations are def. in order! I can notify you if I decline LBJ since I'm undecided, which may or may not help but, you know. Good luck with the rest of your schools!
  4. Agreed! Based on data from the prior years, I started bracing myself for results starting yesterday... I saw something similar in the threads and results, if you look at its placement in the calendar these dates coincide with the first full week of march (i.e. first full week without a feb. date). This feels like my biggest reach school...definitely anxious and nervous to hear back! good luck!
  5. Anyone else find it difficult to focus or be productive knowing that an acceptance/rejection is on the horizon?

I had a really tough time getting my reading done for today because of this very reason! Haven't found a sufficient way to quiet these thoughts, but I hope you hear good things soon!

thanks! It would be even harder for me to finish assignments if I were in school! Luckily I get to procrastinate at work instead haha. On a side note, I appreciate how encouraging and supportive people are of each other on this site

In the same boat! I was looking at your profile on the Berkeley thread and we applied to at least 3 of the same schools! I think we were both accepted at LBJ? Are you looking to do one of their admitted days?

  6. I'm in!!!!!!!!! I was crushed after being wait listed from another top choice, I started thinking I'd get rejected for sure. Woohoo!!
  7. Just found out I'm on the waitlist. Not so sure how the process works but if there are folks out there who will decline their acceptance I hope you do so as soon as you can! Thanks!
  8. Getting Wait listed: 98% rejection bummer + 2% hope = 100% agony!

No I didn't :(. I applied in Canada and there are only three programs with 8-10 seats each. However, the previous year they did end up accepting everyone off of the wait list! I think you have a good chance of getting in so hang in there!

Oh I'm sorry that happened to you :( but this is encouraging. Thanks! And good luck to you if you are applying as well!

I am, thank you! Good luck on getting off of that waitlist!

  9. Hey all, just got an email from GW Trachtenberg saying I was accepted into their MPP program! No internal funding, but I did apply for the Wolcott fellowship so there is hope. It's my first email so I'm happy to know I'll be somewhere in the fall. Good luck to the other GW prospectives
  10. Hello, I was considering asking a similar question. I got an email from admissions being asked if I would like to have someone from diverse groups get in touch with me (I'm Mexican). Obviously less related to merit though, but I'd say these inquiries are good signs, amiright?? Waiting is such a pain...lol
  11. Ahhh! Exciting. So Calatoara, I presume you got one? If so, congratulations! I just checked my application but...nothing! Crossing my fingers
  12. Mine (Mpaff) is also in review....ahh! Good luck everyone
  13. Unless one has enough space in a uhaul, I don't think this is necessarily the best advice. In my experience it is much easier and a "weight" off your shoulders to ship your books media mail than to lug them with you. Media rates gives you a reduced rate for shipping books (despite their weight), and it isn't that costly relatively speaking. In addition, amazon offers an exchange service where you could turn in a book for amazon credits. It is less effort than craigslist, selling your books via amazon/ebay or going on campus to sell your books. Just my two cents...!
  14. Hello, your description brings the national urban fellows program to mind. I pasted the description from their website below (more info at www.nuf.org). I think their deadline already passed though...I also think UC Denver has a good one-year MPA program through their Institute of Public Policy Studies. They are still accepting applications. National Urban Fellows’ Academic & Leadership Development Fellowship Program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree program comprising four semesters of academic course work and a nine-month Mentorship assignment. During their Mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance learning. Fellows receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, full payment of tuition, and professional leadership development. Additionally, Fellows are required to make a $5,000 co-investment to their National Urban Fellows experience. The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements. Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,400 diverse public service leaders who have gone on to assume influential positions across government, philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.
  15. Tax season also brings to mind the importance of keeping your receipts! You can itemize the costs of your move for a possible deduction on your tax expenses. Having moved from DC to Texas in 2013 to do Americorps, I really regret not having done this. Lesson learned! Next time
  16. Seeing acceptances on the results search for one of my top choices is making me awfully nervous...

We're partners in the same situation. Hang on tight, rest easy, and know that it's a gracious privilege for us to apply to graduate program in the first place. We'll know soon enough!

  17. Hi all, this is just a curious inquiry to see what you think. Since submitting my application to MPP programs, I got certified by the IRS in basic tax preparation and have been preparing taxes for low-income folks through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance once a week. I got to thinking whether this is something I might want to notify the adcoms to, either now that they are evaluating my apps or perhaps after any rejections? It is relevant enough to my degree - higher familiarity with tax law and such. I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask for anyone's thoughts here. Thanks!
  18. Hello S1lent, I think it's worth a shot, although it seems like a valid concern. I was thinking of reviving the thread too because I also applied for the Wolcott fellowship on the 31st. Definitely did one essay last minute but I'm happy to have at least given it a shot. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!
  19. As an Americorps member, I beg to differ. The other two may well be selective, but for if you are set on Americorps it is definitely possible to get a position. As far as the VISTA program goes I applied in 2 separate years and got my desired positions immediately. I've talked to other VISTAs whom also had a quick turnaround, and like myself, were given a very short time period to accept the offer. Programs like City Year also have corps members in the 100s for each city that they're involved with. Still, I made the mistake of thinking that taking on Americorps would make for a relaxing gap year while I worked on my apps. This was SO not the case! Just a word of caution haha
  20. Hi there, I'm currently on my fifth month as an Americorps VISTA. I see you are pursuing philosophy, which was my major in undergrad! Hurrah. AmeriCorps houses various volunteer programs so it depends on what your interests are. If you like "being in the trenches" of service so to speak, NCCC might be for you as from what I understand it is more about direct service. As someone interested in public admin/policy I was attracted to VISTA which focuses on building capacity in organizations to fight poverty (thus being more indirect, typically office-type work). I'm assuming you want to pursue an MA/PhD in Phil? Overall I hands down support these programs, they are great character building regardless of your academic goals. I personally find VISTA will heavily inform my future work in a way that research simply can't. in addition it is looked on positively by my grad programs (fee waivers, etc) since I am pursuing public policy, which is oriented to public service. I am glad I pursued this program but I can't deny it also was challenging. I have heard this from Americorps alumni and somehow thought I would be different, but I too struggled. Feel free to message me if you're curious to hear more about it because I feel I am writing too much already haha. One last thing I'd like to mention about NCCC is that they offer courses you could take to get certified in non-profit admin (I think it was that) by the time your term is over. Could be worth looking into!
  21. Just turned in my last US application (one left in the UK) and the catharsis was overturned by my realization that I emphasized "I want to improve on X" in like 4 different parts of my application. I'm thinking, now it's going to look like a deficiency on my part, and dammit I should have reviewed all my essays at the end....bad idea to review apps once they're sent out, just gotta let it be, man! *gradcafe ventage*
  22. oops just realized you were looking for calc and not econ, but at any rate this might be of use to other peeps out there.
  23. Hi there Junil89, I took a mixture of courses in person and online at a local community college, then I had a total SMDH moment when I got an email from SAIS advertising an continuing education econ course they offer, predominantly to help prepare students for grad school. Their fall and spring offerings are open to non-SAIS students. Here's the link: (http://www.sais-jhu.edu/graduate-studies/other-programs/online-principles-of-economics) Wish I had known about it before!!
  24. My scores don't compare to the 160s I typically see here, but I have them and might as well post them: Barron's - 153V / 155Q ETS power prep I - 156V / 146Q Manhattan - 151V / 152Q ETS power prep II - 155V / 150Q ---- Actual test (1st try) - 155V (66%)/ 151Q (45%)/ 4.5AWA (78%) Actual test (2nd try) - 155V (66%)/ 154Q(57%)/ 4.0AWA (54%) I work full time and studied about 2-3 months. I feel the quality of my studying was impacted by my moving cross-country to start a new job. I wish I had started earlier...I could have studied more. Oh well everyone says that right? I forgot to mention, I studied the official ETS book and Magoosh. Watched the modules, but I missed a lot of the math ones. Example of room for growth/improvement... Anyhow, good luck all!!
  25. It doesn't seem like subpenguin implied the US as an "ideal" approach at all - I understood it as just a suggestion to frame my example as an international experience that informs my understanding how our education system can be equipped to manage a diverse population...
