  1. Unless you're working on a next day deadline or the paper is 40 pages long it really makes no sense to stay up all night. You get diminishing returns on your productivity the longer you stay up. You can either stay up for an extra 6 hours and do work, or you can get 6 hours of sleep and actually be productive the next day instead of sleep in.
  2. Have any of you guys still waiting tried to call them?
  3. I'm sure that's faculty dependent. It's the same with undergrad. You had professors that you could have a discussion with easily where others were a pain in the ass.
  4. ^^ This x 1000 I can't tell you how many times Dropbox has saved me. Very well worth it.
  5. It really depends on the cost of living of the state you're moving to. In my situation for example I have a good amount of furniture, and I'm moving from TN to NY City. In my case it would be silly for me to sell my already paid for furniture and buy furniture in a city that probably is twice, if not more, expensive than the current city I live in.
  6. That's one of the biggest reasons that I'm not considering SAIS. Not only do I have to accumulate a significant amount of debt, but the location in Bologna for two yeas since I was accepted into the MAIA program is way more than I can afford. Had they given me some financial aid it would have been a different story. Either way I looked deeper into the program and found it to be very challenging and I would have loved to be part of it. I was an Econ major in college so the quant aspect of it does not bother me at all. That's decision we face though, whether the program is worth the cost or not, and that's a very subjective issue.
  7. Go away. You add nothing to a discussion you've already derailed once.
  8. No offense bro, but you can easily do that research yourself instead of making some one else do it for you. Google is one hell of a tool
  9. Funny thing is that's what I do on my drive to work right now. Hate my job, so I take my sweet time getting there. Also drink coffee on the way there.
  10. That's pretty funny. Could care less about people like that (not that they don't matter when it comes to real world networking) but I am of the opinion that the American dream isn't just a catch phrase. 4 years ago I never thought I'd be accepted into SAIS or SIPA. Revolution should just learn to get over himself and realize there's more than one way to get what you want. You just have to ambitious and smart and not take no for an answer. There's a reason why they say only 1% of the US is prepared to do what it takes to reach top positions in the private and public sector.

    New York, NY

If the deal with your friend falls through you could find some one over here to room with. I'm kind of trying to do that if my current plan falls through. You've still got time. When my cousin moved there she rented an apartment for a month and took her time looking for a good place to live at the right price.
  12. I don't know if there's a purpose behind this ridiculous coincidence but my post-surgery (nothing serious) appointment is on the 9th. Can't be before or after so I'm not going to make it on the 9th. I'm still thinking of hitting up SIPA regardless. Either way I hear that a cold beer during the August heat in NYC is a godsend. Looks like we'll get along just fine at SIPA haha.
  13. Try on here or on the admitted students facebook group that your school will hopefully open up. With Skype these days it doesn't really have to be that way
  14. This isn't exactly an app, but I've been really intrigued by the SmartPen. http://www.livescribe.com/en-us/smartpen/ From what my career counselor said it's great for school because it records entire lectures while you take notes. Then when you hover over a sentence it will replay the part of the lecture that you took that "note" in. Not cheap, but I'm guessing it can be really helpful so it might pay off.
  15. Yeah just full of what seems like anxious internationals. Kind of clogs up your inbox, especially if you don't own a gmail account.

    Laptop!

I know it's hard to wait because a lot of us like to be prepared, but if you wait a little, or even after you officially become a student, your school might have partnerships that offer you a significant discount especially on the software. You can get the student version of Microsoft Office for real cheap, and as well know that's a must.
  17. Internship wise I'm sure you guys can still apply, but since you don't have a visa to the US then you're going to have to go through a different process and apply for a VISA to work there. I'm sure the career services at SAIS Bologna would have better information. Either way as an international you're going to have to get a visa.
  18. Weird.... the wait does suck. I wonder why they're taking their sweet time.
  19. It seems like they're swamped. I called the admissions today to inquire about the YRP and they seemed very tense. I know Clay Made isn't an MIA applicant, are other guys MIA?
  20. Again people on this forum represent 1% of the grad school applicants. Also all information is anecdotal. Best way to do find out is doing the research yourself, or getting in touch with somebody actually attending the program and figuring out if it's a right fit for you. Also, they have a google groups page now where you can ask all sorts of questions.
  21. It really depends what your career objectives are. So what do you plan to do? However this guy would surely say Cornell.
  22. Thanks for the all the help soapwater. That's definitely going to help me bracket myself in the right housing if my current plans fall through. On another note I'm really looking forward to checking out the bar scene there. I'm more of a weekend drinker since I'm a meathead and go to the gym during the week, but nevertheless it sounds like it's going to be fun. newdisplayname, absolutely. When's your orientation because mine is on the 9th and I'm an MIA. I'm going to be there for most of the week though. The benefits of having a cousin that lives in the upper east side haha
  23. I was on the fence between SIPA and SFS. I know SFS gives a great quality education and sets you up really well for a career in the public sector. When I initially applied SFS was where I wanted to go, but being in the military I've grown disenchanted with government work, so at this point I'd really like to make it in the private sector. That coupled with the fact that I found out my military benefits at SIPA give me $38,000 of funding per year and a life long dream of mine to live in NYC made it a very easy choice. At this moment I'm trying to iron out the last few details in regards to funding. So I would say there's a 95% chance I'm going to SIPA. But I'd like to make it clear if I intended to work with the DoS then SFS is where I would go. Their curriculum seems to be greatly suited for such a job.
  24. Don't read much into it. This forum probably reflects 1% of the government affairs grad school population if not less.
  25. Sup soapie, Still waiting for Revolution to come crash our party. Anyway how much do you pay in rent and utilities if you don't mind me asking. was wondering what I'm looking at. Rent is real cheap here in TN comparatively. Oh and for general recreational purposes, where are the best bars located?
