  1. Yes you can. Most universities automatically link your test scores with your application once it is submitted. I did that with a couple of schools I applied to. Didn't have any problem. But email your respective admission coordinators just to be sure. Best of luck on this journey! :-)

  3. To all international applicants: I have applied for MS in UMass Amhersts's Civil Engineering Department for the coming Spring semester. My application has been in review for well over a month now! I'm starting to think that they've already rejected me but haven't informed me for some reason. Has any one else here applied to the same? If so, have you heard back yet? With January approaching fast, I'm starting to get worried that time is running out for me to apply for, and get, an F1 visa (assuming I get accepted of course!).

  8. I have been accepted to both schools for MS in Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering. As an international applicant, I'm still struggling to decide between the 2. Both are well reputed in civil engineering, have great faculties and each has a strong curriculum for my particular program (altho VT might be slightly ahead to be honest). Overall its a close call. What factors should I consider before making a final decision? Please help me out. Any kind of feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
  9. @Bullet Cat: Have you tried Magoosh? If not, then I strongly recommend you do. They have some good techniques and a large collection of sample questions which are as (and in some cases, even more) difficult than the real test. Might give you a much-needed boost in your scores. All the best!
  10. Oh dear God, that's a long wait! But then again, applying for grad school is nothing short of an epic war. There are plenty of battles that you have to fight along the way. Till that moment when you get the decision in! :-) Although I'm not from your field, you should consider applying to at least 2 more universities. Just to be on the safe side.
  11. The story so far: 2 acceptances, 2 rejections, 2 decisions still to go! Still no idea where I'll be come January 2014.

  12. Wow, you've applied really early! Good for you. Having applied for Spring 2014, I can say from personal experience that the processing time varies for universities. I've applied to 4 US Schools over the last couple of months; and I'm still waiting on a decision from one of them. The waiting period drains you mentally and psychologically! My advice is that you should first ask the admissions officer whether your application has been sent for review or not. From what I understand, the admin staff takes a little bit of time to compile your application materials before sending them to the admission committee or the faculty concerned. Once its sent for review, then it'll take 3-4 weeks for the decision. But trust me, that timeline isn't written in stone! Just try to keep yourself busy elsewhere till the decision comes. Easier said than done though. Best of luck!

  14. Thanks a lot for your input, daniele! Really appreciate it. I'll definitely contact the respective graduate schools. The link is also very useful. The slightest glimmer of a funding opportunity will be a massive morale-booster for me.
  15. I've been going through my potential schools' respective websites searching for scholarships available to international students. Trying to find out whether they offer any performance-based scholarships. But, sadly, no luck so far! Does this mean that the only option for international (F1 visa) students to fund their studies in the US is either a TA-ship or an RA-ship? Enlighten me guys!
  16. Thanks a lot Mik! We're both on the same boat now (Well actually you got on the boat a little earlier than me ). The last few days before the decision were heart-stopping. But it all feels worth it now. I will surely heed your advice about keeping the schools waiting. Let's see what the remaining schools have to say about my application. Seems very likely that I'll take the risk as well!! Let's just hope it pays off. And thanks for the good wishes, I'll definitely keep you posted. All the best to you for Fall 2014!
  17. After an arduous and painstaking process, I have been accepted to 2 MS programs in my field. As much as I'm thrilled by the success, I do feel that not having the assurance of funding does make me nervous as grad level study in the US is quite expensive - and even more so for an international applicant like me. I'm still waiting on another 2 decisions. But I'm pretty sure that the chances of getting accepted with funding are very low, as I do not have a research or teaching background since completing my Bachelor's. I haven't yet made up my mind which school to attend. Now I need advice: what should I do in such a scenario? With the help of my family, I have enough funds to pay fees for my first semester. But thereafter, I wouldn't want to burden my family with finances any further. I do know of an example where an MS student got financial assistance after being accepted without funding: one of my classmates (from B.Sc.) attended Virginia Tech for MS in 2009. He didn't get any funding in the 1st semester, however, he managed to get some sort of financial assistance (probably a TA-ship) from the 2nd semester onward. I'm sure others have also gone through similar experiences. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks!

I got an acceptance from Virginia Tech!! And this feels even sweeter after I was rejected by Purdue a week back.

So, what's the latest on your end? Hope all is well?

  24. Don't worry, it doesn't matter where you appear for the test. If China's convenient for you, then so be it. Just stay focused on the test. Prepare well. And try to get as high a percentile as you can! ETS doesn't issue an official transcript in paper form. The score is displayed in your GRE account. And the test centre is not mentioned anywhere. Best of luck.
