  3. Not even in Europe?? Strong English influences and yet the league isn't in Europe! Well I'm stumped! Altho I won't give up that easily. Let me get into detective mode and use the powers of deduction (a la Sherlock Holmes ). Going by your profile name, 'Andean' Pat: that seems to point to the Andes region. One of the South American leagues then?

  5. Oooh so the suspense continues. Hmmm, let me take another shot at it.... Well i'm not British, so from my limited knowledge of British leagues, is it the Scottish League?
  6. LOL... That is a very good reason to watch MLS. What a player! However you seem to be overlooking his outstanding achievements at Arsenal. He's a legend for all Gunners fans (including me )!

  8. Would I be correct in assuming that the 'well-known' league you're referring to is actually the English Premier League? Big fan of football (soccer) and tennis. Follow the EPL quite religiously, not to mention the Champions League, the Euro's and the World Cup. Occasionally watch F1 as well. As u may know already, EPL has a massive Asian following. My guess is there will be plenty of people interested in watching the games together, whichever university it may be. Albeit, I'm not talking from personal experience here, as I'm an international MS applicant hoping to get in for the Spring 2014 session. As for American sports, not a fan as such. But I feel I might develop a liking for NFL and NBA.

Intense is the perfect word! Through the last couple of months, writing my SoP has, inadvertently, turned out to be a cause for some serious self-reflection. The more I've delved into what I can write in my SoP, the more I've realised how little I have done with my career. And hence, my life.

It is great that you could do that. It is truly a difficult thing to do, especially if you find out things about yourself that aren't nearly as flattering as you thought. Congratulations to you for having the courage to honestly reflect on yourself and all the best for a very rewarding future in all aspects of your life.

hah just another bitter reminder of the low gre scores that I have. Struggling with my job. I will try to contact OSU again may be something can happen

  11. Finally making progress on my SoP... Had to happen some time!

  13. Effectively, Magoosh and PowerPrep were the only 2 preparation tools I used. I also tried Princeton Review's sample questions and a diagnostic test (Don't remember the score I got). Magoosh turned out to be much closer to the real thing while PR's questions were mostly easier than the real GRE. Any how, Magoosh's score predictor gave me a Verbal range of 155-160. Attempted two of their timed practice tests: verbal score was 153 in both. In PowerPrep II V2.0, I got a disappointing and worrying 147! (English isn't my first language) Appeared for GRE on 17th July: 157V, 158Q, 4.0 AW! Thus, Magoosh's score range was spot on (thankfully for me ).

As an engineer, my work has mainly revolved around technical inspections and maintenance works, while i see people on this forum talking about their research publications, philanthropic work, heading large scale projects etc.

Now that you've rightly pointed it out, i shouldn't have worded my Status in such a generalised way, as if i'm speaking for everyone. :)

I see. It sounds like you have achieved some accomplishments, too, by accumulating lots of applied experience in the field whereas others have chosen to focus more on writing and research. Your age and years of experience are amongst your strongest assets. Best of luck!

Thank you for your good wishes. I sure hope the admission committees share your feelings.

    GRE score

Which universities are you applying to? That can matter a lot.
  18. Before you even start thinking about a retake, contact your program(s) and ask them point blank. Your verbal and quant scores are really good. I can't say about your program but the weightage given to analytical writing scores varies among different programs, fields, and departments. E.g. In my case, most of the prospective engineering programs I've contacted so far have been clear that AW scores do not matter all that much.
  19. Even if some of your prospective schools don't provide a guideline, the best thing to do is to contact them, as MsDarjeeling has already alluded to. It worked for me. And if you've started your online application, then do check out the SoP/LoI section. You might find something useful there.

  21. Thanks for the insight, TakeruK. But i should've actually clarified that i'm applying for MS, not PhD. As for me, the prospective universities I've shortlisted have already confirmed that they do consider Spring admission. So no worries there. I think what you've mentioned in the last couple of lines is quite prudent that i should ask them how many students have been admitted in previous spring sessions. That will provide a good benchmark. And you're absolutely right: all these factors vary among different fields, departments and universities.
  22. flip-a, as a fellow international applicant, thank you for starting this thread. Moving on, well, I'm applying for the Spring 2014 session in the field of Transportation Engineering. It is fairly common knowledge that the chances of getting funding for spring is lower than for the fall intake, as stated in almost every email I get from my prospective programs. But it would still be great to hear the perspective of those who've been through this process: 1. Do i have an outside chance of getting funding? 2. And in continuation of my previous query, let's say I get accepted without funding, are there cases where grad students have managed to secure funding in the second semester (i.e. the fall semester)? Thanks and regards.
  23. Hi everyone, I'm an international applicant and currently in the process of applying for VT's Transportation Engineering program for Spring 2014. Any kind of information regarding the area, the Civil Engineering Department and its faculty etc will be of great help. Thanks.
  24. Applying for grad school is like a 'riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.'

  25. Reading Sherlock Holmes will help unless you're reading the one written in old English. But reading books with typical GRE words will not only enhance your vocab but its also a great way to prepare for Reading Comprehension questions. Make a habit of reading newspaper articles, scientific journals, magazines such as Reader's Digest, The New Yorker etc. This routine will make the job of sifting through the GRE test passages much easier. Otherwise the deluge of info can be overwhelming.
