  1. Wish I'd known about the GRE pdf file before I appeared for it. Oh well. Any how, that's good advice.
  2. I have another suggestion. Start grouping similar words together and I don't just mean words with similar meanings. For example, words like errant, arrant, err. Or indignant, indigent etc. I hope u catch the drift. Read sample sentences, that'll give you a clear picture of how the word is being used. This tactic is much better than just cramming words! Here's a book that helped me a lot, it hasn't got too many words but its free and definitely worth your time: http://magoosh.com/gre/2012/gre-vocabulary-ebook/
  3. Hey Etien, even tho i'm not an instructor or any kind of expert on GRE vocab, but I have to say you're going about it the wrong way. I started my prep this way but it didn't produce any worthwhile results. Plus it was so mind-numbingly boring that I lost motivation after a couple of weeks. Here's a strategy that u might want to try: Get hold of any good vocab book or ebook and start learning new words, in context, instead of going through them alphabetically. That'll be much more fun (or at least it won't bore u to death). The revised GRE tests you more with the contextual knowledge of words rather than the quantity of words in your arsenal. A huge difference from the old GRE. Just my 2 cents.
  4. Monochrome, this is actually a great query. I'm an international applicant and applying for the Spring 2014 session. Which means that the deadlines are pretty close for most of my prospective universities. I appeared for GRE a couple of days back, so I'll have to wait for at least a couple of weeks for the official score-sheet. I sure hope it doesn't hamper my chances. And as you rightly mentioned: "Personal experience would be greatly appreciated."
  5. PowerPrep V1.0: Gave a ranged score, 360-460 V, 650-750Q PowerPrep V2.0: 147V, 157Q Attempted 2 timed practice tests with Magoosh, got the exact same score: 153V, 154Q And my estimated range according to Magoosh was: 155-160V, 156-161Q. Actual GRE (unofficial, I appeared today): 157V, 158Q My study schedule was woefully random which definitely didn't allow me to realise my full potential as evident in my score. As an approximation, I probably studied for about 2 months. Magoosh did a fare job of predicting my score. PowerPrep's verbal score was a lot less than what I got (WOOHOO!! English isn't my first language), however it was spot on with regards to my quantitative. Best of luck to all future test-takers! Just make sure you're ready to feel the pain of sitting for over 4 excruciating hours in front of a computer screen. P.S. Hey Badger12, both of us have the same score.
  6. Any one currently enrolled in VT's TISE program? I'm in the process of applying for the Spring 2014 session. Any info will be greatly useful. Thanks.
  7. Hi everyone, I'm an international applicant, and want to apply into Purdue's Transportation Engineering program for Spring 2014. Can any one tell me (or ballpark a figure) for the Civil Engineering Department's GRE score requirement? I've already mailed them a couple of times in the recent past but still awaiting a reply. My unofficial GRE score is not exceptionally good, so I'll apply only if I feel I have a realistic chance of getting in. Any other useful tips or info will be welcome. Thanks in advance, Adil.

@TL: In a way, yes. But the beast still took a little chunk off me (I'm referring to my Quant score). :P

As an engineering applicant, should've performed a little better on the Quantitative section. No regrets, tho, what's done is done.

@jenste: Well, thanks. :) I get the feeling you're going thru something similar.

No, fortunately I didn't have to write the GRE so I could focus on my SOP's instead. You will be so happy next summer when it's all behind you. Good luck!

  9. Thank you, getitlow. But I've actually dropped UB from my list of potential uni's. They do not offer any funding for Spring applicants.
  10. I'm an international applicant and currently in the process of applying for the Spring semester at UI. Apart from the details regarding city and campus life, can any one give me some info regarding the Civil Engineering Department (faculty, programs etc)? Plus, what is the local economy like, are there any worthwhile jobs for civil engineers? Feedback is welcome. I'm applying for the Transportation Engineering program. Thanks.
  11. Let me start by saying that English isn't my first language, so i'm not the best judge/reviewer. I have to say, for a first-timer, you've done rather well especially if u did it within the 30 minute limit. However, can you write down the complete prompt, as in what the statement asked of you? That is always very important. In my humble opinion, your sentence structures are good. Paragraphs are well developed. You seem to have a good grasp of vocabulary. However, I feel the counter-argument should have been a bit more elaborate (this is where the prompt is crucial; because at times, test takers are asked to delve into both sides of the argument). All in all, you're well on your way for test day. And be sure to look into the Issue and Argument topics given on the GRE website. I feel that's the best way to practice for the AW section. All the best, Adil.
  12. And Magoosh is a good preparation resource for GRE, especially for those who want to start from the basics. Their video lectures are quite good, and they have plenty of practice material to hone your skills. The timer on each question is a great feature. Worth a shot.
  13. The Princeton Review is good for the techniques but i would strongly recommend NOT to go through its practice tests and sample questions. They are much easier than the real thing.
  14. Bumping this topic... Still waiting for some info regarding this university (as per my post above)! Any one?

The posts above are insightful. I'm in the process of applying for ISU's Transportation Engineering program. What is the Transportation Engg program like? And in general, how good (or otherwise) is the Civil Engg Department? Any kind of input will be welcomed, such as job prospects for transportation engineers etc. Thanks in advance.
  16. Working on my SoP for Grad school. I'm a railway engineer, need ideas for a Transportation Engg focus. Any one?

Point taken. I already have a few ideas which i have to put into words. However the logic behind this status update is to share them with another railway/transportation engineer.

  17. By the way, is there any one here who is/was in the TISE program? Any kind of info about it will be of great help. Things like; how hard is it to get in, faculty, relevance and effectiveness of courses, job prospects after completion, so on and so forth. Thanks in advance.
  18. Desperately need to stay focused on GRE; but instead struggling to get my leave sanctioned. Renews the hatred for my boss. And not to mention, I despise my job!

  20. I second the above the request. I'll be applying for an MS in Transportation Engineering for Spring 2014. Such prior info will help greatly for an international student like me.
  21. I'm in the process of applying for UB's Transportation Engineering program for the Spring 2014 session. The posts above are quite insightful for someone like me, who's in a far off land. Fingers crossed, if i'm admitted, this thread will probably provide a good way to weigh out whether I want to join UB or decide to go elsewhere.
  22. Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum, so kindly pardon me if something of this nature has already been posted here. Any how, I'm in the process of applying for an MS in Virginia Tech's Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering (TISE) program for the Spring 2014 session. I'll be opting for the Systems Engineering cluster. Being an international student, I will obviously be hoping to get financial aid. I'd like to put forth the following queries to anyone who is/has been a part of this program. Any kind of input will be welcomed: Can anyone give me some solid info regarding this program? How good is the faculty? What are the chances of getting financial aid in the coming Spring session? Life at Blacksburg? Living expenses, outdoor activities, sports etc? Thanks in advance.
