NavyMom reacted to ProfLorax in Biased Grading
Hey people. We all have freak out moments in grad school. I don't see the reason to pile on C&C. The professor ended up agreeing that C&C did A-level work, C&C ended up with an A. The conflict has been resolved. What's the point of harping on someone who responded to a stressful situation differently than you would have?

I'm glad everything is resolved! I'm glad there is a space for us to vent and troubleshoot stressful moments in grad student life without judgment.

You have nothing to prove that she graded you unfairly, yet you came here to say horrible things about her. I think it is you that is unprofessional.
Sorry but I am not sorry.

And somehow I ended up with an A in the course. Just goes to show that bombing is not the end of the world and some professors are just outwardly unpleasant!

I have glowing letters of rec thank you. Is this where you go to try and bully people when you feel insecure with yourself?

No kidding! I listed topics covered NOT "sections" to be filled out in the NSF application. Try to read more carefuly next time. What YOU need to do is STOP TWISTING MY WORDS and stop claiming that I said something that I never did. Go get your rocks off somewhere else!

Of course broader impact runs throughout. DUH!!! Thats why I didnt refer to them as "sections" but rather topics that need to be covered within and/or throughout depending on which youre talking about. Was that too abstract for you?
Is this you making assumptions again? Or no?

Take some advice: When in doubt, or when you do not concretely know something, ask more questions instead of speculating. Gather more info, don't spit clouds of assumptions about things you do not know, and read more carefully.

Your feedback is very helpful and much appreciated Marty3. Thank You!

And for the rest of you, its not appropriate to make accusations and assumptions about people in these forums. So if you want to shit talk go do it else where.
No one has any business making accusations or assumptions about ANYONE in here. Get lost!

I never said that everybody at dais is a problem, nor did i say these issues all occurred at Davis.

Davis is one of the best schools about accommodations. However, there is a bad apple in every bunch no matter how good the system.
Theres new faculty that dont know the P&P's among other reasons. Some can be so caught up and stressed about funding 9since there job depends on it) that they overlook their responsibilities to provide a room and need reminded.

I do not mention any of these in my statements which you know nothing about. Have you read my stuff? NO!!!!
Do you know what I focus on? NO!!!!
Do you have any business making assumptionns about me? NO!!!!

Do you have any right to tell me WHY I got the grades I got? NO!!!
I have nearly all A's excluding courses I didnt get accommodations BITCH! HOW DARE YOU TELL ME WHY I GOT THE GRADES I DID!!!
DID I SAY I DID POORLY? NOOOOOO!!!!!
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUCKEN CLUE WHAT I FOCUSED ON?  NOOOOO!!!!!!
DID I EVER SAY I MENTIONED IT IN THE MANNER THAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING? Do you know anything about what I DID fouc on? NOOOOO!!!!

The only thing you got right was that YOU ARE ASSUMING!!!
So shut the effin ASSuming up and ONLY SAY WHAT YOU CONCRETELY KNOW AND KEEP YOUR DAMN SPECULATIONS OUT.

I've noticed that in my department most folks wear more business casual / formal businesswear.  It's because we're in a more business professional enviornment, and alot of the folks are already working in those types of fields (government), and they come straight from work (as do myself).

On weekends, I would just go to school wearing comfortable but nice clothing.  The way I see it, networking is huge and you never know who you will meet and when.... I dress to at least give a decent first impression.

I have been using a combination of Zotero and an Excel file for work, and I like it so much I think I'm going to do the same thing for my readings. Very often what sticks in my mind about an article is not what I wrote down, so I like having a lot of text-searchable notes or tags that I can use to quickly find what I'm thinking of. For example, in public health (and in life actually) we all know that exercise is good for you. So I would never bother to copy that down, but once I'm writing I might want to cite a particularly authoritative or well-written systematic review about just how good exercise is. Good thing I tagged it "CDC" and "exercise", then. And if I do have to reread something it helps me at least know what to reread, rather than fruitlessly opening a bunch of different articles.

My current Excel file has headings for date added, the project I got the article for, citation, DOI, date published, full-text y/n, systematic review y/n, objective, method, outcome measure, sample size, result, recommendation, quotes, and comments. I sort/filter by the first 7 columns and text search the others. When I read systematic reviews, I have a separate file where I keep track of how they measured the quality of included studies so I can use them as a checklist for my own study designs.

I do still take class notes by hand though. Physically writing stuff helps me remember it even if I don't reread. And my handwriting deteriorates quickly if I don't.

I can't believe it's finally here. After all my research for programs, applications, preparing for the GRE, writing a SOP, submitting LOR's and waiting and waiting for a response. At times it felt as if my head would explode waiting and checking emails. Then I received a rejection letter and that rejection stung, but I didn't stop I kept going. Then one day I didn't even check my mail and my acceptance letter sat there waiting for me. Is this really happening to me because I can't believe that it's the night before graduate school. I know it's going to be a rough road but I'm looking forward to it.

So thankful I found this forum and could chat with others who understand my anxiety. Thanks!

Wishing all of you a wonderful year!

You're lucky... When I took a tour of my prospective school, they didn't even address grad students. They only offer tours to transfers and freshmen. When I asked if they had materials about grad school, the kid looked at me with a blank face.

I just checked, and I am an officially classified student as they finally received my transcripts with my BA posted on them.

Now I just register for class in June.

    Dear Harvard,
I'm still waiting to hear back from you guys. Would really be wicked if I got in. But FYI I did get into Yale and they're pretty wicked too. I'd definitely accept your offer but I don't "need" you guys. But it would be pretty wicked if you did say yes.
    Truly,

I'm happy to exchange and critique essays.  This is my first time applying, however, so I don't know all the ins-and-outs of SOPs.  I'm told I'm a decent writer, however.
