  1. Does anyone know when Duke (GPR) is sending out interview notifications? I don't see anything in the results and it seems they would've sent them by now based on previous years.
  2. I was one of them (for NT). Not entirely sure about other tracks, but my guess is that everyone has received interview invites for the ThD, since admissions decisions are not field-specific. Don't lose hope though! Some ThD candidates may not accept if they get into Duke's GPR.
  3. Thought I was out of the running, but just got invited to interview at Emory for NT! I guess I'll be seeing some of you there.
  4. Duke (PhD) usually sends invites to their interview weekend the last week of January. I think the ThD program starts setting up interviews shortly afterward.
  5. Congrats! It's entirely up to you whether you want to post it in the results section or not, though it's helpful for current and future applicants. I'm guessing all the fields were contacted, so that's a bummer for me. Ah well, the waiting continues!
  6. I saw in the results that someone posted an interview invite for HB at PTS.
  7. No worries. As it so happens, I just received notification that I was invited to Baylor's preview weekend!
  8. Congrats! Do you know if other fields were already offered interviews as well?
  9. Thanks for the tips. I hadn't even thought of the position of my laptop, but a good thing to consider.
  10. Thought I should post an update since I started this thread. I got an email yesterday afternoon for a Skype interview at Princeton Seminary! Finally, some news. I'm applying for NT. Related to this - any advice on these kinds of interviews? I was told it would be short, maybe 10 minutes.
  11. What do you all do when a school asks you your ranking for programs? I'm applying to ND and their app asks for a ranking of my potential schools, but they say it doesn't impact my chance of admission. I find it hard to believe that they won't consider the fact that a candidate lists ND at #3 and another at #1..
  12. I say turn it in "late." I think what happened is the department website listed Jan 2, but the graduate school website had the official Dec 15 deadline. Since they probably can't change the grad school app system this late in the game, they're accepting apps until Jan 2, even though the grad school system will mark them as "late." I don't think it will affect your chances. A less polished writing sample would, though.
  13. I thought the same and got the same email. If you look at their newly updated website though, it says Dec 15 is a soft deadline and Jan 2 is the hard deadline. Not sure what that means, but they said they will consider all applications received by Jan 2, though they will be marked "late." Hopefully, that doesn't mean apps submitted by today are seen more favorably.
  14. I think last year the deadline was Dec 16, but the GDR website said the 28th, which they updated a day before the Dec 16 deadline to the 16th.
  15. Interesting... is there any precedent for a program to extend their deadline this much? Seems a bit late to do that (a day before the original deadline?). If there are fewer applicants this year, perhaps that's good news for us if that makes the applicant pool less competitive.
  16. The first of my apps are due Dec 1st and I keep second guessing my qualifications and app materials. "The SOP isn't quite good enough, or my LORs might not be the greatest, etc. etc." January can't come soon enough...
  17. In terms of journal publications, it depends where you’ve published. If you’ve published in smaller denominational journals, it won’t help you (and may hurt you). On the other hand, a publication in a top-tier journal will of course work in your favor.
  18. Those schools in the top 5 will definitely want to see a higher writing score. If you're set on going to one of those schools, I would take it again to improve your writing to at least a 5.
  19. I'm applying for PhD programs in religious studies and am wondering if I need to include a note about my undergrad GPA in my SOP. It's not horrible (3.46 on a 4.3 scale), but not exceptional either. I'm finishing up my second master's (not uncommon in my field) and my GPAs for both masters are above 3.8. I'm also wondering if I should explain this because my undergraduate transcript has at least one C from my freshman year and some withdrawals from courses, not to mention random coursework (Political Math anyone? Astronomy? What was I thinking...). I know I'm competing against students who knew exactly what they wanted to do from freshman year and who have 3.9 GPAs, so I'm just wondering if it's worth the sentence or two in my SOP. Perhaps mentioning it will raise concerns that weren't even there?
  20. What made you decide to fly across the country to visit these schools? Almost every professor and student I've talked to has said visiting doesn't improve your chances of acceptance and that it's best to meet at SBL or to correspond by email/phone. Have you heard something different?
  21. Thanks @Onthenahar. I agree about being forward thinking. The faculty changes definitely make discerning my "fit" more difficult. Most of the current students I've contacted are as unsure as I am about potential faculty hires. At Notre Dame (acc. to current students), only Fitzgerald has been taking students, so he is usually swamped, though I heard he's great. I'm sure Lincicum will start to take on students, but Meier doesn't advise doctoral students anymore.
  22. I thought I'd go ahead and start this up. Where are you all applying and in what field? I'm applying for PhD programs in NT, but have yet to finalize my list of schools. Currently, I'm considering applying to: Baylor, Emory, Duke, Duke Div, Notre Dame, PTS, Yale. I may add some schools before all is said and done. Faculty changes have made it harder to narrow down my list. It seems like many senior faculty decided to retire around the same time! I'm thinking of Yale (Attridge and Dale Martin), Emory (LTJ and Holladay), and ND (Moss left, so she didn't retire, but they now only have two NT profs).
  23. I don't think Yale Divinity requires the GRE, so you have a good shot at Yale at least. Not sure about Harvard.
  24. I know it's common for those in the hard sciences to list research experience on their CVs, but does this apply for those in religious studies? I'm working on my CV now for PhD apps this fall and I'm wondering whether such a section is necessary. For example, would I list the different major papers I've written with a brief summary in a section on my CV? Or is that best left for the SOP?
  25. Are you sure those schools even require the GRE for master's programs? I know for a fact that YDS doesn't require them. Now, if you were applying for PhD programs, I would tell you that those scores are not adequate (you would need at least a 5 for writing and probably a higher verbal). For master's programs, the GRE does not matter and is usually not even considered.
