  1. In my case, OSU will pay up to 300 USD, and my flight cost 570 (and another 40 for an insurance).
  2. Thanks! A friend of mine also studies there. His name is Guillermo, he was the one who first talked to me about Statistics as a possible specialization field, and here I am.
  3. Congratulations on all your admissions!! No. I am going to Ohio State U Information day. I lied to my boss about having a wedding to attend (lol), so I was able to skip work for a couple of days. However, it would be very costly to attend two admit days. If anyone is going to OSU, we should meet at the hotel on Thursday. @Double Shot. Thanks. I am asking because I saw a couple of admissions and some students were talking about it.
  4. I applied to Iowa State, which is my top choice considering that Texas A&M seems impossible, and I have not received a reply. This was the only one PhD program that I applied because the head of the Department suggested I was a competitive candidate. Should I consider that I was not admitted to Iowa State or wait a little longer? I am going to OSU this week, and it might be a good opportunity to accept their offer. Also, for those going to OSU, we should meet.
  5. Unlike those for their graduate peers, English requirements for undergraduate international students are not that rigorous. Therefore, I have found many undergraduate students with a poor command of English. I think you should have given a simple synonym, or rephrase the question in a simpler way.
  6. I finished my degree in IRPS. While most of the introductory classes were big (around 50-110 people), the rest of the classes were fine (10-40) and pretty enjoyable. Even if tuition is lower in LSE, which I highly doubt, you can get in-state tuition for the second year and if you live on campus (Single Graduate Apartments) you can pay almost nothing (450 USD per months). I have friends studying in London and they do not have a good time because of the housing; however, London is definitely more interesting than San Diego.
  7. Good. I am a little worried about the weather. I have never been in a city with such low temperatures before, lol. Well, once I was in Berlin -8 (18F) and I survived.
  8. Hi everyone, Who's attending the Graduate Information Day at Ohio State University on February 20th? I am attending and I was wondering who else is going.
  9. During my graduate studies at UCSD, the stipend was before taxes.
  10. Hi everyone, I have a question for those of you who happen to use Stata and SAS. At my company, they requested a SAS license for me, but it is being delayed and I have to work with databases. Until now, the actuary normally downloads the databases for me and hands them using a USB. But this takes a lot of time; he told me that I should try to figure out if I can access those databases using Stata. So, basically the command he uses to "directly connect to the server" is this: Libname LAC ORACLE user='XXXXXX' password='XXXXXX' path='XXXX_exadata' schema='GORAPR'; I was wondering if could do something like this using Stata or even R, but mostly Stata, I am relatively new to R. Greetings.
  11. I think you could be competitive at IRPS/UCSD. However, a better GRE score might guarantee a fellowship.
  12. It depends on the country. If you want to stay and work over there, just look at national rankings. Also, do you have the language requirement, or are those in English?
  13. Hi. I think you should try getting into IRPS at UCSD, you could definitely get in. It is a Master in Pacific International Affairs, but you can basically pick a concentration on Public Policy. You can apply to in state tuition after a year, and several students have worked/done internships at non-profit organizations in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the US. You should assess what is better for you in terms of your long-term goals.
  14. Sorry for not replying before, Gradcafe does not notify me when people answer my posts. 1. For financial assistance, IRPS supported students to become TA's at the language departments (mostly internationals or Americans with immigrant parents and semi-native foreign language skills). Another way IRPS supports people is by granting students TAships for classes like Finance, Quantitative Methods, sometimes some econ classes, etc. Regarding RAships, there are a lot of professors hiring students, however they favor students who had already taken classes with them. Other options are graderships, readerships, or other jobs at other departments: Rady Management School, Sociology and others. The school is pretty big. So, the answer for question 1 is yes, there are options but you need to reach out to professors. 2. Since I am international, I have no idea. I just came back to Mexico and got two nice job offers with good wages. For the Americans, it depends, several of my exclassmates are working in Washington (some are in SD, some in Bay Area) and have good jobs; some wages are good some are bad, etc. It depends entirely on you. Mostly everything in the US is about networking. As long as you have minimal econometric skills, you will find a job, since employers seem to value those skills the most. I have the impression IRPS students need to explain to employers what MPIA means and how they are suited for a job. Nevertheless, IRPS has a good Career Service Office who can really help you. 3. The career services helps you improve your CV, coach you for interviews, understand how the labor market works so you can get a summer internship more quickly. Still, it is up to you to find your internship. I found an internship by myself in Europe, but declined it because I was going to get more Math courses in order to boost my chances to be admitted into a MS Statistics (which I did) or PhD in Economics. One piece of advice. If you intend to pursue an economics PhD just take as many Math classes as you can. That is the only thing that matters. If you want political science, try to work with professors first. In general, IRPS can be a very good program as long as you take advantage of it.
  15. Indeed it is, but right now I only have admission to Ohio and Virginia Tech. I had talked with the chair of the Department of Statistics at Iowa State and he recommended me to apply to Iowa S, but made no promises (a couple of exclassmates are there studying their PhD's) since they needed to review my whole file. Hopefully everything will turn out fine and I will attend any of those four, which are excellent schools.
  16. I received two days ago my acceptance to the MS in Statistics in Virginia Tech. I was also admitted to Ohio State University and I will be attending to their Graduate Information Day. I will accept their offer once I know the results for Iowa State and Texas A&M (in case I am admitted to any of these, I might end up attending here), Purdue University is also great, but I have the impression Ohio and the other two are more prestigious. However, something is bugging me. I am interested in econometrics, sampling and surveys, time series and environmental statistics. Somehow, I feel like Virginia Tech is better suited to my interests, but the program at Ohio seems to be better overall. In general, the reputation of Ohio is very good too. What do you think about Virginia Tech and how does it fare against Ohio State?
  17. Thanks everyone. I will carefully start reviewing all your suggestions. I am a little afraid I might lose some of my ability to understand and do proofs, so I think I will continue studying Casella.
  18. Thanks everyone. I will be attending a MS in Statistics next August/September I am trying to be ready for everything. I was studying Casella and Berger and it seems ok.
  19. Good to hear that. It is a good program because of its flexibility, you can make it very hard or you can make it very easy. They allow you to take lots of Poli Sci classes and some professors are pretty good.
  20. I was in IRPS and some of my classmates were admitted into Poli Sci PhD's, and I might be admitted to a Statistics PhD (though I took tons of extra requirements at the Math Department). Let me know if you have any questions, I just finished the master this year. So I can give you more insights.
  21. I would recommend you applying to IRPS at UCSD. They have a Poli Sci/Intl Relations program and highly value people with international experience.
  22. As a fellow international student, I will tell you that most international students go back once their MBAs are over. So, you need to consider if you would like to go back to Pakistan after your MBA, since an MBA is a very basic and general degree. In order to be hired and sponsored, you need to prove you are better than an American with a MBA. There are plenty of American MBA's with excellent working experience, social skills, etc. On the other hand, the US is increasingly demanding more MS and will facilitate immigration processes for those with STEM degrees. Additionally, a MBA is very expensive compared to a regular master.
  23. I would say you are a native Mandarin speaker and fluent in English. However, for the purpose of the application I would just go with native. Regarding Americans with Mexican/Central American parents, those growing up in United States have an eerie Spanish because their parents' Spanish, main source of Spanish for them, is not really formal (there are a lot of high school dropouts) and most of them come from the countryside (at least in the case of Mexican immigrants) and use informal versions and weird words; second, they tend to mix Spanish with English making it more difficult for native Spanish speakers to understand them, and most important, they never had formal training in Spanish, that is why they have trouble understanding each other. I have never had a problem understanding other Latin Americans (from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba) because we mostly use a formal Spanish and avoid national slang.
  24. You were probably admitted. IRPS admits everyone. I would recommend you to go somewhere else.
