  1. nothing here either, but based on past years, March is NYU's time to respond back.
  2. That was one of the factors in our decision to have kids. I'd like to have grandkids too. Plus kids are the "neediest" in their first 5-10 years. As they grow up they get that independence thing going (my nine year old is already trying to assert some of that right now). That'll allow more time for grad school and an uninterrupted few decades in the workforce. Things sucked financially when our kids were younger but we had fun and spent a great deal of time with them Got "fixed" after my second. My wife is prone to "baby fever" and with a number of folks our age now starting families, well lets just say I don't want an accidental #3
  3. I have two problems 1) Get into grad school with some sort of funding 2) My wife gets a FT teaching job Plan A is of course both happening. If neither happens, well then we stay put and my wife gets angry (she hates this area). Maybe we move closer to the Bay Area but not my liking. Frowns all around The wild card is if only one of those things occur. Then what??
  4. HAHAHA...you're in EXACTLY the same boat I am. I visited Wagner in November and loved it. I applied before the Dec 10 deadline to be considered for the Bohnett scholarship and now spend my days waiting. So far I guess no decisions have been announced. I also applied to Baruch, not as a fallback school but an equal. I like both programs and would be happy with either. Keeping fingers crossed
  5. I'm back from my self imposed 2 month GC hiatus. Im encouraged not to see others receive acceptance/rejections letters from the same schools i applied to
  6. been a news junkie since third grade. yeah i know that is odd. I spend at least 2/hrs per day catching up on news in many different subject areas. Election year news cycles (2006, 2008, 2010...)are worse for me though.
  7. I second that. I have previous (incomplete) grad experience that was relevant but I dedicated a small portion of the SOP explaining why I am looking at their school instead of my previous one.
  8. I have been sporting some form of facial hair (stubble mostly) since my mid 20s since without it I'd look too young. Now in my mid 30s and going back to grad school Im considering going back to the clean cut look again.
  9. A dad's perspective here. I became a father and went to Grad School in my mid twenties and at the same time tried to balance a lousy job (which I was later downsized out of), an infant and an overwhelmed wife that had no family or peer support to fall back on. Guess what? It didnt work. At all. Lost my job, our home and almost our marriage. Fortunately we got on our feet again. But the experience so spooked me I didnt even contemplate trying again until this past year when our youngest entered Kindergarten and we stopped hemorrhaging money. By the time I go back, the kids will be in first and fourth grades and not nearly so dependent. Kids are expensive and consume lots of time, especially when they are young. The same can be said for grad school. Trying to mix both together is not for the feint at heart. Personally, I'm happy I delayed my masters for kids and not the other way around. I had a lot of fun raising them either as a stay-at-home dad, working low-responsibility jobs or entry level positions in my field that allowed a ton of flex time. Once I start my masters, that free time goes away and it wont improve after as I'm pursing managerial work. My unsolicited advice for both genders: have your kids and wait until they are in public school before going back for your masters or get the masters out of the way before starting a family.
  10. I didn't like CUNY's so called electronic option. The old fashioned way was preferable and cheaper. I packaged everything together and sent as one file. A few weeks later, I got emailed confirmation that my application was complete. My program has rolling admission though, so there were no deadlines anywhere near.
  11. This is one of the reasons why I didnt consider schools like Columbia.
  12. wondering myself if this month will bring an acceptance/rejection letter from one of my schools. I was notified on Feb 1 that my app will be considered at the next adcomm meeting. hooh-boy!
  13. My boss *IS* my primary LOR, so he is obviously knows from the get go. I informed him NINE months prior to my intended departure time and made a plan to complete all major projects I am working on. I think he'd be happier if I stayed because there's a chance my position could get deleted for budgetary reasons.
  14. Maybe Im dense but how would family status even factor into the admission process. My current fb profile image is an artistic photo of my little girl hugging me. I never reference the fact that I have a wife and two kids on either app nor expected it to come up in this process. As to the original subject matter here, my name is relatively common unless you add where I live. Then Im more findable
  15. I would definitely post where I got in and am going on FB. Unfortunately I dont know yet soooo, this is all theoretical.
  16. No responses either way for me but one of my schools *DID* notify me that my app was going to "be reviewed at the next scheduled admissions committee meeting." Showtime baby...
  17. My wife is a teacher with credentials sought after by a number of school districts. Our goal was to have her get a job when I work on my masters. Normally I wouldnt worry too much that this wont pan out, but the economy sucks and that has crimped hiring. She has already been laid off three times (each time finding work somewhere else nearby the following year) but sooner or later that luck would run out. I'm hopeful we can pull this one off as this would be our biggest move yet (CA to NY). No plan B yet if she doesnt get a job.
  18. Actually I was under the impression that in this economy out of state students are more desirable since they pay more and represent income to the state. In state students are partially subsidized by state taxing arrangements.
  19. Oh and a cautionary note for all you whipper-snappers out there from this geezer. Ok not a geezer but beginning to push middle age. I applied to Grad School a year (23y/o) out of my undergrad where I was a mediocre (but improved) student. I applied because I couldnt find a job related to my undergrad or interests. I got into one school but got zilch in financial aid. Had trouble plugging into the career center because I had to maintain a full time job to pay for school and subsistance, which killed opportunities to get into my profession. I also lacked direction in what I wanted to do and let my attention wander. A year into school I got engaged, then married. Left school to move cross country and became a father not too long after that. It has taken 11 years since I left Grad school attempt #1 to try again. This time I've learned my lessons and have a plan of action.
  20. I like your spirit on this. I will be 36 when I *start* and hopefully just 38 when I am done. But I am only going for the masters and then back into the workforce for the next 15 yrs. I want my PHD somewhere in my 40s or 50s so I can become an adjunct instructor or professor and then eventually in my 50s or 60s an assistant prof if I am lucky. I don't want to be a full time professor though. Well that's the plan anyway.
  21. probably yes for one, 50/50 for the other. No clue on funding... I would be happy attending either school and would have a hell of a time trying to decide if I got into both.
  22. Is that 450 quant or verb? Congrats. It reminds me to get off my duff and get all my apps in. All two of em anyway.
  23. I work full time (and beyond) for local government as a planner. I write, research and do all sorts of projects that wind up on a shelf and collect dust. Ok, its not that bad... My job keeps me busy enough it has seriously impinged on my ability to work on SOPs. Thank God im only got two to do. People sometimes look at me crazy for wanting to leave the certainty of a secure job (which I do like) and pays well for the unknown of Grad School and an undetermined job in public administration in a far off city. Sometimes I wonder this too. But I also know that no degree=no advancement.
  24. THanks for the link. The content is mostly irrelevant to my subject matter but tone and structure ideas have been what I have been looking for. This helps
  25. Is the prof the only one in the department that was asked for a LOR? Can you trust others in the dep? If so perhaps you could write the professor and state you are no longer applying for Grad School the next year as you dont feel like you are ready for it. Puts the blame on you in her eyes but gives you an opportunity to ask someone else without telling her you flat out dont want her as a reference. Thats of course one option, not necessarily the best I guess.
