  1. I've been with my guy for 7 years... yup, there is definitely some pressure to get married. One co-worker even said the other day, "After 7 years, either shit or get off the pot". If anything, going through grad school gives me the excuse for a low-budget, small, informal wedding. But we'll probably wait.
  2. I'm chewing the furniture too, and I don't have a dog to blame for that!
  3. I recommend also posting in an Engineering subthread.
  4. MS candidate here too. I get the feeling that PhD students hear before MS/MA students - could be because our deadlines are later. My UCLA deadline was the same as PhD applicants' deadline, and I heard around the same time as everyone else. Waiting to hear back from most of my other schools (and had later deadlines). There's not a lot of information from previous years on the results page, but acceptances/rejections are scattered all over the place... acceptances as early as February 16th and as late as April 30th, rejections as early as February 22nd and as late as April 17th...
  5. Does sliced turkey work On your sandwich? Because, Jew equals no ham
  6. Who knew PBR would be a hot topic? Anyways, here is my boring opinion: I don't mind it, I'll drink it if I'm at a party, but normally wouldn't pay for it if there are better selections available. If I'm low on cash and want to buy cheap beer, I'd probably go with Simpler Times.

  8. Reading this thread brings a big, goofy smile to my face
  9. You are accepted! But, too bad, no scholarships Pay with your first-born
  10. Still waiting to hear back from 4 schools. I half-expected to not hear back until March - for the schools I applied, most did not have admission results until March. Does anyone know if UCSD and UC Davis do rolling admissions? If so, it would make sense why a lot of people have heard back before me (assuming PhD deadlines are before MS deadlines)
  11. Thanks all - USC is in a partnership with a company to provide the fellowship, there may be a good chance that the same people will be reviewing the fellowship applications. I'll use parts of my graduate application SOP but it looks like I'll have to write a full new SOP for the fellowship application... oy
  12. Hey all - x-posted from "Applying for Graduate Schools"! Apologies if my question seems naive - I have never applied for a fellowship before. The fellowship is due March 4th, and I just learned about it a few days ago. I am applying for a fellowship that asks for graduate students "who express an interest in energy-related fields of study." My entire SOP for graduate applications talked about how I wanted to use my graduate studies for advances in alternative energy! It sounds like the perfect fellowship for me. Am I able to use my graduate application SOP for this fellowship application, too? I was planning on adding a paragraph about how the fellowship would be of great use to me, but does the fellowship committee already have a copy of my SOP? Would it look bad to (almost) use the same SOP for both my graduate school application and this fellowship application?

  14. I don't know the advantages of attending a US institution vs non-US institution. I would advise asking the International community in IHOG why they are applying to US graduate schools. They might have a better perspective. The only advice I can give - if you want to receive a respectable GRE score, your writing skills will need to improve.
  15. Save your energy, she's a lost cause.
  16. I don't feel like I can help you decide this. Do what you feel is best for you.
  17. Did my undergrad at UCSD - I lived on Camino Kiosco, close to UTC Mall. Free bus (with student sticker) took me straight to campus. Took me 30 minutes each way. EDIT: Rent was $650/month and never needed a car.
  18. Same. I'm totally fascinated that we live in a time where the Internet was born, and is still budding. It's like we're in the Wild West times of the digital world. I can't wait to see what else is in store for us in the future. Otherwise, I love the Wild West. I could watch Bonanza and Gun Smoke all day long. Romantically simple, rugged, independent.
  19. I originally only applied to 6 because I was worried any more schools would be a burden to my recommendation writers. Now I realize that applying to more schools is very common. If you are seriously interested in 10 schools, then apply away!
  20. If anyone else is going to the Viterbi School Masters Welcome Luncheon on March 28th, I'll see youuuuuu there!
  21. My alma mater, UCSD, sends me alumni emails every few days. I can't help but wonder EVERY TIME IT HAPPENS if it's an admission decision (since I reapplied for graduate school). Blaaaaah.
  22. I feel like grad school applications are a game, and I'm a n00b

  23. I had never planned on pursuing Materials Engineering. After graduating with a BS in Environmental Chemistry and working in the alternative energy industry for a few years, I grew to love Product Development and decided I wanted to go into Product Development/Product Engineering. I researched open job postings, bookmarked the postings that attracted me, and then I researched the degrees required for the job. Electrical, mechanical and materials engineering came up over and over - and I decided along with my chem UG degree, I would pursue materials eng. With my UG chem degree, I didn't think I would be a top applicant, but I've been accepted to one program so far! It's not uncommon for non-eng UG candidates to pursue engineering MS degrees. My advice: search for job postings that attract you, and research the degree required for those jobs. It might help you figure out which direction to take.
  24. @PhDerp, That makes a lot of sense. I did initial research last summer (to decide where to apply), but haven't delved into it again. It would be nice to do a refresher, in case I get accepted to multiple schools. But in the mean time, I'm still giddy to tell everyone I've been accepted to USC, I'll be frequenting this board and other USC functions in case I end up there
  25. @PHDerp, I think it's because I applied to Master's instead of PhD. I don't think they'll have visitation/recruitment weekends for Master's students (and I think that's common for Master's students in general). If I get accepted to UCSD or UC Davis, I'll be pretty torn - both MS&E departments are ranked higher than USC's MS&E department, but USC's name travels further, and has a fantastic alumni network. Hence the bajillion pros/cons list. I'll probably make one of those desperate "HELP ME DECIDE" posts if it comes to that. What made you chose USC over UCSD?
