NYU did notify (according to the boards) around now. Idk what is up with UVA. I just haven't been rejected (yet). Here is to hoping! -

Not yet! Praying for one! last year most were done via phone on the 7th. -

Yeah I mean, after a certain point, you might end up with acceptances at places you really don't want to be at. All of my schools are placed I felt like I would be a good fit in. Location would be the only determining factor and funding, of course. -

I'm wishing I applied to more schools. 11 seemed like a lot, but now idk. I just couldn't afford more, but that is my fault for not realizing how expensive the applications are! -

I mentioned it if it said people of interest on the application, but I didn't within my SOP. -

That's exactly what I did! I just stated that I enjoyed that their faculty worked on these interesting topics and mentioned why I'd fit well. -

I won't do it then. Question about POIs: my advisor told me not to choose one and plop them in my SOP because she said they'll just weed them out easier. As in, if 5 apply to work with the wonderful Nancy Armstrong, they won't choose all five, so it is best to stay a bit more general. Did anyone else hear this? -

Congrats! Kamisha, who did you email/how'd you go about doing that? I'm really interested to see how I did and what to improve upon. -

I thinking prestige does and does not matter. For instance, if the program is ranked highly, but not necessarily the school, it doesn't really matter. That being said, most of the ground-breaking scholars are at fairly decent programs (1 through 50ish). So, as the context of the question was below 75, I'd say you might not be doomed, but you probably don't have the best chance possible. As long as you do good work though, I'd think you'd be fine. -

If I don't get notified, I'm demanding my application fee back. That is just rude. I paid for a timely response. -

I was told not to venture here before hand. The entire internets is your kingdom, Simba. But what is that shadowy land? That is grad cafe. You must never go there. -

I had a TA who said they expect you to fail the subject pretty much if you're taking it out of undergrad. She took it after her MA and got upper 600s which is apparently where they want MAs to be (for programs that care). It is funny reading some of the Ivy views on it. Some absolutely hate it and others want it. -

I was so angry with the test. Everything I read told me it'd be mainly on 17th to 19th century England. I had so many questions that were world lit or american. And I'm fine with those, but I didn't study them as much. And this info was gathered from ETS and those stupid books they sold. I was so happy I took Middle English because I had a few questions on translation. -

Yeah my math was absolutely atrocious. It was my own doing though. When taking the exam, I focused only on verbal. I hate math and half way through my test (during the 10 minute break) it froze and I freaked out. It took forever to the proctor to realize I was raising my hand and I was worried it'd disqualify me or something. Also: YAY TRIPLETS -

I had issues with a rec writer for three of the fellowships I applied to at the start of the fall and I'm sorry you had to experience this as well. It is truly horrifying, because it is the one part of an application we cannot control. I really love both and if I get into either, I think I'd just start sobbing (happily, of course!). I wish you the best of luck! -

Looks like NYU and UChicago should be responding this week based on the last few years of data. Best of luck to those applying there! -

I'm not sure you mean it like this, but I was just thinking about what if people ever saw my freshman and early sophomore writing. It wasn't bad for my age group but dear god, I definitely improved. Sometimes I'll read over things and just ponder why I made certain arguments the way I did. It is funny though. -

I have faith I'm just curious as to how others went about publishing as undergrads and in what journals. I'm sure we'll both get in somewhere and then we won't have to worry! -

My department didn't even mention it. I got published freshman year because I put myself out there. I don't even know how to do it now, especially because as an undergrad, I feel like no one would take my work seriously. I started my own research journal at my school so that others might have a place to publish. -

I applied to 11 and one international fellowship. I'm coming from a pretty big public research uni, but they do not value humanities at all, so it has been a struggle. What about you? -

I feel like I won't get in anywhere because I only have one publication and only decent GRE scores (87% verbal, 93% writing). My school didn't really stress publishing as an undergrad and though I tried to find journals/source to publish in, I found very few. I'm hoping I get in somewhere though.
