  1. Just wanted to chime in here and post some resources. There are several places where academics with institutional affiliation share resources with independent researchers. I don't want to post the links on a public forum, but please feel free to pm me and I'll connect you. Researchers also upload a lot of material on ResearchGate and Academia.edu. Here is UCSB's list of open access sources: https://www.library.ucsb.edu/scholarly-communication/open-access-repositories. eScholarship is particularly good. Also posting some *maybe* helpful links for folks trying to publish who don't have supervisors to guide them. It is hard to publish while unaffiliated, but not unheard of perhaps. * For researching the review process and turnaround time for various journals: http://www.socjobrumors.com/journals.php; http://turnaround.wikidot.com/; https://scirev.org/ * Impact factors are really hard to judge. I tend to look at where my favourite up-and-coming researchers are publishing, make a list of common journals, and then rate them from highest to lowest impact factor using http://www.scimagojr.com/journalrank.php.
  2. Hi @Socioeconnut, I'm truly sorry to hear about Columbia. Since you mentioned getting a fellowship before, I've known people who got doctoral fellowships but were not accepted to programs during the same year. They were able to defer the fellowship for a year and apply again; having it on their CV definitely helped during the next application cycle. Just mentioning it since it seems like your profile for next year is already stronger than this year's.
  3. Congrats @WinterIcedLatte @wildflower21, @runningincircles, and @Baffle on your acceptances!!! Since my cycle is over, I'm going to go into lurker mode. Thank you so much to everyone on this forum for supporting each other - I've appreciated this little haven more than you know. If I can help in any way, even by just listening, please shoot me a pm.
  4. I got an email from the department chair. I applied to PGSC.
  5. I had been planning to convert my history undergrad thesis into a sociological work for a while because I had established the phenomenon/ research puzzle in a very social scientific way. Luckily, the only development sociologist at Berkeley did a lot of agrarian work. So I read one of her books over the summer and then went to the first day of her class to introduce myself. She gave me permission to enroll in the class, really enjoyed my project and class contributions, and then asked me to enroll in a reading course with her the next semester. I know that I got lucky and was privileged too, because not everyone gets to "just" move to Berkeley: I did it because McGill was such a dumpster fire of an experience and my partner was doing his post-doc at UCB/UCSF. Edited to say that while I was at Berkeley, I was also able to audit classes and go to free talks and workshops. Those were enormously helpful. I even got an interview for my MA thesis from one of the invited speakers at the South Asia Center. A second edit because I just got into JHU and have apparently got a fellowship at Brown that covers the entire first year!
  6. Haha, I haven't posted on the results page yet. My stats are less-than-stellar, but like @Socioeconnut I took advantage of living in the Bay Area by taking classes at UCB and my two writing samples were good.
  7. Thank you for the congratulations, @Socioeconnut. I'm sorry to hear about Harvard.
  8. For somebody like Shriver to offer to be your supervisor is a great sign and will mitigate the ranking issue. Wherever you decide to go, I hope we'll run into each other on conferences since we have some overlapping interests.
  9. Congrats on Utah and Shriver!!!!!
  10. In at Brown! What a lovely early Valentine's Day gift.
  11. You must be exhausted! Hope you're taking care of yourself and wow-ed those adcomm folks.
  12. Hello! Anybody else considering going to Cornell in the spring or fall? I might be starting a PhD in Development Sociology there, which is housed in the public part of Cornell. Did anybody else know that Cornell is part-private, part-public? Here's some info on its public, "contract colleges" : https://www.sucf.suny.edu/project/mcp/cornell.pdf.

    Brown

@a_elizabeth, I'm an applicant at Brown this year as well, so I have some interest in following this thread. I have an offer at Cornell and know (more importantly, like) the school/area/quite a few people there already. I frequently dreamed about leaving my POS Master's program, so I understand how important it is to like the place where you're studying. I hope you're doing okay - please feel free to PM me to commiserate.
  14. I called Berkeley and Brown and they were very pleasant. Although both grad coordinators only told me that all decisions would be released by end of a certain week and nothing more.
  15. Congratulations, @abenz!!!!! You should take the Emory rejection off your signature. But seriously, congrats!
  16. Cooooome ooooooon, Brown. Where are the rest of your decisions? Who keeps checking my academia page from Brown? Those questions keep repeating in my head, even though the department told me over the phone that all decisions would be released by the end of this week and I know that the person checking my page is likely a grad student. I'm not going stir-crazy or anything.
  17. Best of luck to you, @KevinJHa! I am sure you will impress Northeastern folks with your knowledge and enthusiasm! Sending lots of good vibes.
  18. @MintChocoChip I think this is such an important decision and one that will impact you for such a long time that you can give yourself the permission to be a little bit selfish and put your own needs first. I would stay with the current grad student IMHO. It's really nice that you're so considerate though - I'd love to have someone like you in my cohort.
  19. Congrats, @infovore! San Diego is an awesome city and UCSD a great program, from what I hear. I'm being put up with a soc. grad student at Cornell too and I plan to take full advantage of that. I was hosted by grad students when I presented at Cornell conferences in the past. It was a great way for me to get a feel for the school and the kind of people who are attracted to the dev. soc. department. I am a great believer in understanding the demographics, culture, and norms of a department. I firmly believe going to a place where I feel like I belong and where I can be happy during the PhD marathon will help me produce better scholarship. I attended an MA program where my fit, academically, socially (in that almost everyone was way richer and younger than me), and normatively, was terrible, and it impacted my academic output and well-being enormously. Just my long-winded two cents.
  20. Folks, I called Brown just now. Apparently, they will be sending out results by the end of next week.
  21. I never got an email from UWM, but got one for Berkeley from the Graduate Admissions Office to check the portal.
  22. Add me to Berkeley reject pile. Not surprised, and recognize that I was privileged to have been a visiting student there.
  23. Hi @pinoysoc, I am not sure if your question is rhetorical. If not, you're definitely welcome to message me with your materials. I was rejected from all US programs in 2013-2014 as an undergrad (including a program at Cornell). The difference between that cycle and this one is that I have learned how to demonstrate my potential through my statement of purpose and CV better, despite the fact that I went to a horribly unsupportive master's program in between and it showed in my grades with one professor in particular.
  24. I also want to echo a lot of what has been said about rejections from grad programs and self-worth. A lot of times admission depends on the ability to send the right signals to the adcomm and not much else. Not getting in therefore doesn't mean that you're lacking in analytical ability. I am rooting for all of you to enter into great programs that you're happy with. If anyone is reapplying next year and want to chat, feel free to send me a pm either now or closer to the beginning of the next cycle. I'll be happy to read over things or just chat.
