Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
qeta replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
@abenz, @syza, and @latemeg, I called the department this morning. I was told that there is no additional information on my application, and the decisions will be out in the next 1-2 weeks.- 945 replies

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
qeta replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
@ThePastelCalico This happened to me as well, in that my MA research gave me a very good sense of what I was interested in. There were points that I wanted to focus on repeatedly throughout my thesis, but they didn't fit into a political science thesis or my department's interests. Those remnants became important guides as to where I want to go in the future. If you're thinking of reapplying, I think presenting your research at the ASA Sociology of Development and the Law and Society conferences would be a great idea. (Does the ASA Environmental Sociology section have an annual conference?) I got very good feedback at these conferences, met tons of current students and interesting and interested faculty (one of whom wrote me an amazing LOR). Just looking at the conference presenters and the schools they were representing, especially the grad student presenters, also helped me narrow down what programs I should be looking at.- 945 replies

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread

I'm really sorry that you've had such a tough day. I don't know if you've ever read Irene Bloemraad's article "What Textbooks Don't Tell," but she talks about how an initial supervisory meeting at Harvard (with Skocpol, I assume, although she is not named) made her think that her career as a political sociologist was over before it had begun. She doesn't mention this in the article (talk about what textbooks don't tell) but she apparently started crying as soon as she left the room that day. You will undoubtedly find a way through this problem and produce brilliant research in two months.- 945 replies

I only have one acceptance, but if it comes down choosing between a couple of schools, I will first and foremost be looking at how supportive the department and my potential supervisor are. I did my MA at a horrible department with a horribly sexist and classist DGS. It made finishing coursework, getting funding (I could only apply to fellowships that didn't need a nomination from the department), and just carrying on with life incredibly difficult. I also care about fellowship opportunities as I absolutely want extra money for language training, fieldwork, conference attendance, or methods training. I did quite a bit of these things, except for language training, for my MA. They were incredibly rewarding and the network of students and scholars I met through these have been invaluable. I also only applied to places where I wouldn't be scared to live as a racialized woman with a Muslim last name. I am definitely going to prospective students' visits and plan to ask current students about this frankly.

@abenz I'm so so sorry! If it's any consolation, I was flat-out told by my UCB supervisor to apply to a mix of public and private schools because public universities have trouble funding their international students. Wisconsin also seems to be especially financially strapped this year.- 945 replies

Thanks for this info! Wisconsin is my worst fit of the five programs, but I would still love to go there. I'm really sorry to hear about the rejection, @ThePastelCalico. It sounds like they really struggled to fund students there this year. Updated to say that I've also been rejected from Wisconsin. :-(- 945 replies

Database for international conferences?

Here are some more: https://www.cfplist.com/ http://www.wikicfp.com/cfp/ https://air4edu.com/ I also check various relevant H-net pages for CFPs and the conferences section on my discipline's US association (ASA, in my case). -

Your research sounds really interesting! I also study rural sociology (although not exclusively). UWM hasn't released all of their decisions, so don't lose hope yet. Congrats on the NC State acceptance! Congrats on UNC acceptance! Sorry I missed it before. Thank you. Congrats on all of your acceptances - I'm so happy for you! Also congrats to @abenz, that jobs sounds like a perfect fit!- 945 replies

I loved Matt Smith's Doctor, but must say that the arc got way convoluted way fast. Can't wait for a full series of Jodie Whitaker's Doctor!- 945 replies

I co-sign the above. It was never apparent to me before, but schools seem to stagger their acceptances according to criteria not known to us. Berkeley's string of phone acceptances last Friday doesn't seem to signify much for other candidates except that they must wait some more. Which Doctor Who season are you up to? I assume you're watching Nu-Who, rather than the classic series.- 945 replies

When I talked to current DSoc students at Cornell, they couldn't stress enough that the DSoc and the Soc programs are totally unrelated. They have like one "welcome the new cohorts" party together a year, but that's it.- 945 replies

The waiting game: How have you been keeping busy?

The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon. Slight but beautifully written; set in an alternate universe but with frightening similarities to the present-day ambitions of Pence et al. regarding Israel. I have read it and reread it many times because it's so sad, beautiful, completely absorbing, and yet just a bit hopeful. -

Hi @abenz, an implied rejection is not a rejection though. Plus, you still have other schools to hear back from. Don't lose hope - you only need one admit.- 945 replies

The waiting game: How have you been keeping busy?
qeta replied to KevinJHa's topic in Sociology Forum
I haven't really been freaking out that much because I've been sure of getting rejections the whole time. But knowing that Berkeley released decisions today last year has me frantic. It's my top choice (as it is for many others, I'm sure). I only today realized that this rejection will come first and be absolutely crushing. -

Aww, thanks for the well-wishes! I hope you get into your dream schools too. I have bizarrely fond memories of binge reading Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, given that it's hardly a pleasant book. How did you like it? The James book has some of the most beautiful writing and interesting characters I've read in a long time. My only complaint so far is that it depicts a very masculine world. -

This really helps though, doesn't it? It's one of the more pleasant side effects. What are you reading? I read Han Kang's the Vegetarian and am making my way through Marlon James's beautiful behemoth (over a 1000 pages), a Brief History of Seven Killings. -

I got an email from Law and Society Association this morning saying that I'll be presenting parts of my MA thesis at the conference this year. Anybody else heading to Toronto in June? Not really sure that there are many socio-legal folks on the board this year.
