Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
qeta replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
@abenz I would love to go to UCB for many reasons, not least because I have an amazing relationship with my supervisor there. It's almost impossible to get in though, so I'm expecting bad news but hoping for good news. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a UCB acceptance for you too! Good luck with the UK app!- 945 replies

The waiting game: How have you been keeping busy?

Thank you for the kind and encouraging words! I hope you get into all of your top choices as well. -
The waiting game: How have you been keeping busy?
qeta replied to KevinJHa's topic in Sociology Forum
I'm alright most of the days because I am sure that my applications this cycle were not up to par. My partner wasn't ready to apply to jobs this cycle as we'd planned, so I get another shot at applying next year with not a lot of downsides. My problem is that my MA department was horrendous and discriminatory and my exchange at Berkeley soc. absolutely wonderful. The combo makes me extremely scared to go to a department that I do not know well. But I only know Berkeley and getting into that department is so so hard. I actually had serious breakdowns before submitting apps to other schools because I don't want to repeat my MA experience, which made me feel utterly powerless and less than human. -

Hi @pinoysoc, that sounds extremely tough. I also suffer from anxiety and depression and taking my medication honestly helps. I don't know what your finances are like and if you are able to get a prescription. If you have a prescription and a Costco in your area, the medications at their pharmacy are super-cheap and the pharmacy specifically is not legally allowed to discriminate against non-Costco-members. I hope that you hear good news from your schools soon! -
Cornell Fellowships in Support of Diversity
qeta replied to socstudentzzz's topic in Sociology Forum
Hi @soc4315, I submitted this statement as part of my application to the Developmental Sociology program. My statement was 1.5 pages (single-spaced, written in LaTex). I talked about my personal journey as a racialized immigrant woman and how that experience has informed both my research interests and my volunteer work. I concluded with a sort of vision statement about the work I would like to do as a diversity fellow for Cornell students and Ithaca residents.- 2 replies

@abenz I am hoping that we will both get good news from our common departments (Berkeley, Brown, Wisconsin)! It would be fun to meet face-to-face during prospective student visits, although I remain unconvinced that I'll make the cut this year. Your profile sounds incredibly strong, so I'm sure you have very good news coming your way.
-
Phew! You must feel so relieved to have that sorted. Thanks also for relaying the application pool size and decision timeframe info!

I got a VPN service exclusively for the waiting period and have been marathoning Euro crime dramas on Channel 4 UK and SBS (Australia) On Demand sites. They are reasonably complex and entertaining, and reading subtitles also leaves less brain space for worrying. -
Hi folks! Not sure if anyone else is applying to JHU this year, but their portal was malfunctioning over the holiday break and applications could not be submitted for the Sociology Department. The program coordinator just emailed me to let me know that the deadline has been extended to Jan. 3, 10pm EST. Just thought I'd make a PSA in case anyone had trouble submitting the app over the break or is having FOMO and thinking of applying to one more program.

Sociology Scholars and Briggs Myer Personality Types
qeta replied to lorenzen's topic in Sociology Forum
I am either an ISTP or an ISTJ. My P and J scores are always approximate 50-50. My S and N scores are close, but more like 45-55 split towards S. I'm not sure a greater than 50 percent N score can be characterized solely as a proxy for having sociological imagination. The sample size is too small and probably we have things in common as we self-selected to be on GC and then to take the test. To offer some anecdotal evidence, I've had a very turbulent life and I prefer stability. Even when I lived like a nomad and was doing research in three different countries for a year during junior year, I had planned it that way. As in, I finished my freshman year and planned that I would get a fellowship to research abroad for fall and winter semesters and then a research internship for the summer. -
Congrats, @rosiereal! I know an ABD in the HSS department, and she has only nice things to say about it. I don't have an answer to your questions that is based on experience. There are however tons of thread on the topic from previous years. I would do a search on the entire forum, including the Sociology subforum. In his book on grad applications, Asher says to dress nicely and comfortably, which sounds like business casual to me.

I think they would understand that you've made a last-minute decision to apply to some more schools. They already have the letters, so it's a matter of just uploading them.
-
One of my neighbours got a giant envelope from Yale School of Management with "Congrats and Welcome to Class of 2020!" today, and I was so envious! Not because I want to go to business school (yikes!), but because I know that she applied in early November and already seems to be hearing back from schools.

Thank you! I track my working hours with Toggl and apparently I spent 13 hours on Thursday and Friday working on 3 apps. All I know is that it felt much, much longer. Drink lots of tea and eat snacks for your Georgia State and UNM marathon. The unlimited snacks was the only good part of my ordeal!
-
Phew! That was a marathon! Just finished applying to Cornell Dev. Soc., Brown, and UW Madison. Ended up deciding against MSU and TAMU due to time and money constraints. They would have been a hard-sell anyway as MSU and TAMU do not have a lab or department focusing on my partner's specialty. How did everyone else's apps go?

How important is it to email professors when applying?
qeta replied to lorenzen's topic in Sociology Forum
Wow, you are amazingly organized! My interactions were more like detailed conversations during conferences about specific points in their presentations. I think I'll go with @European Lumpi's advice and keep quiet. The process for sciences admissions seems quite different though, especially for the lab-based sciences. I still think your first instinct was right. -
My supervisor at Berkeley (I was a visiting student last year) explicitly told me that the department finds it difficult to fund international students and that my status as an international applicant is likely to count against me. She was the head of the adcomm last year, so her knowledge about this is quite up-to-date.

Ah, thank you. I agree with you, but my partner (an academic in the sciences) thought that I should email these profs after app submission. -

qeta replied to lorenzen's topic in Sociology Forum
I have a sort of related question. Should I email folks post-app-submission, if I'd previously indirectly worked with them or spoken to them in-person at conferences? -
I agree with @GreenEyedTrombonist. The UC personal statement is definitely just a diversity statement. It is a way for you to tell a narrative about your background and if certain aspects of your life led to you to apply to the program. I study the co-formation of race/ ethnicity and class, and so my UC Berkeley personal statement focused on how my personal history made me interested in this topic. It also highlighted my previous volunteer activities in positions related to my research and reflected my commitment to engage in similar projects at Berkeley.

Sociology PhD Applicants: Tell Me Where You're Applying!
qeta replied to latemeg's topic in Sociology Forum
Berkeley (already submitted, with two whole minutes to spare!!) Cornell Dev. Soc. Brown UW Madison JHU (Program on Global Social Change) MSU TAMU McGill -
For Marxist political theory, I think CUNY would be a strong choice. York political science and social and political thought programs both have strong emphasis on Marxist theory. I graduated with BAs in history and poli. sci. from there. William Clare Roberts at McGill recently published Marx's Inferno, but he is the lone Marxist in a department full of little battles. I wouldn't opt to go to McGill political science department again (did my MA in comparative politics there), but Roberts does fit your political theory/cultural studies focus. Burawoy at Berkeley of course does very interesting extensions of Gramsci. He is very active in the department still and advises a few graduate students, but will have to retire at some point. On the other hand, he might be literally immortal and not just immortalized because of his contributions to sociology.

Just thought I'd say hello and good luck to everyone on this thread! I'm a fellow applicant this year to the following schools (listed in order of app submission deadlines): Berkeley; Cornell (Development Sociology); University of Wisconsin-Madison; Brown University; MSU; TAMU (perhaps, still mulling over this one); JHU (Program on Global Social Change); and McGill (I did my MA here in poli. sci.). As you can probably guess, I am interested in sociology of development. My main areas of interest are class and race/ ethnicity formation; migration; and citizenship. They sound quite disparate, I know, but after four years of thinking and writing (and lots of wandering) I seem to be able to synthesize these topics to a certain degree. I could post my stats here, if they are useful. Writing them out felt weird and self-promoting, but honestly I'm happy to share them in the forum or through direct messaging if anyone feels that I should. The Gradcafe community was a great resource for me when I was still wandering between 2013 and 2016. I don't come here as often anymore, but I wanted to say hi to fellow aspiring sociologists this year! Good luck!

Canadian Political Science Programs- Fall 2017 cycle
qeta replied to somuchtoread's topic in Political Science Forum
I would say that McGill basically always has TA-ships to offer and it is easy to pick up extra grading/ research assistant/ invigilator work. Montreal is a cheap city, so it's livable if you do this but not super fun. I was able to live in my own apartment in the Plateau for the first year by doing a full-time TA-ship, some research work, and grading for a couple of courses and got a fellowship to tide me over during the second. Good luck!
