Competitiveness Anthropology Graduate School
Forsaken in LA replied to anthroflea's topic in Anthropology Forum
Reviving a semi-oldish thread-My Cornell rejection letter said they received around 150 applications I believe, and they accepted 7. They fund all students though I think. Of course, factors such as reputation in certain areas, or fields make a huge difference. I know that a program that funds every admitted student is going to be more competitive than one that doesn't fund all students. Another point that I hate to bring up in this discussion, and this may or may not be true, but here goes. Upward movement after your PhD is not the rule but the exception. I am sure their are many variables as well, including post-doc, and publications, but for the most part, if you look through the "top" department's faculty pages, you find that most are graduates from other top programs. This is what Iv'e heard, and through observation it seems to be for the most part true. This is not to say that you can't get a position at U of Chicago with a PhD from UF or UNLV, I think it just means that if you do, be prepared to be the best, and shine at what you do. Now, for myself, to secure a tenured position back in Northern California when I finish would be ideal, and is my eventual goal. I would most certainly love to work at either, Stanford or Berkeley so it would seem to make sense to research where they hire their professors from. Well it happens to be from "top" programs. I don't know if this whole post is bullshit or not, you can agree or disagree, it just seems to be my observation. If I can get a position after I get PhD, and it's tenured, I'll be happy. Of course we know this to be true of most people on this site. -
I'm supposed to be reading. But...I've now watched all episodes 2 times. It has to have something to do with Tuttle huh? Also, what about Wody's father-in-law?

Who is the Yellow King though??????
-
yes, please someone claim this, and provide any info you can! Congrats as well.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you have to be a citizen to take advantage of Federal Aid. I could be wrong though.

this definitely helps, thanks!

I really just don't understand why it takes a month to send out rejections? I'm speaking of NYU, and since i've heard on these boards that they had already chosen their 10 candidates, I am confused as to why the results page shows a history of rejections in late March? I'm just being frustrated I suppose. I know I'm on that reject list since I never had an interview, but without a formal rejection I just keep on hoping and checking SMTS updates. Oh what this process has turned me into...

I didn't see another acceptance. Did they offer you the MA? NVM, found it.

Rejection to Cornell.

Sorry to hear it Sarab. Everyone else had has already said it, but I'll say it too, at least you have some really great options! I've still got zero response from any PhD program I applied at. BTW- Who's claiming the Cornell rejection? I swear, I'd rather have my rejection en masse, like UCLA; at least it puts closure on the school. The trickling of rejections is what kills me. I somehow feel like there is hope, all the while knowing the longer it takes, the less likely the acceptance is to come.

Dan Fessler, despite having the most difficult class I've taken in anthro at UCLA, is an amazing professor. Congrats!
-
Frustrated with UofChicago. I can assume I did not get accepted because I had no interview, and no email yet, but I would have at least liked a rejection letter.
-
Thanks!!
-
Well, not anthro, but I got accepted to Georgetown's Latin American Studies program, funding pending. Hopefully...
-
Dang Daykid, that's pretty awesome still.
-
congrats coba! fantastic! Tough choices for you coming up huh? now I suppose that I can count on a rejection.
-
Wow! so great! congrats to you! snail mail or email? and again, wow!
-
Yeah what's up this? Do some people email POI's and ask them? I don't think I'd do that, but honestly, how does one person get a rejection before everyone else? Possibly a POI that had interest in the candidate, but was unable to accept them? I wish mine would be so merciful.

Cotsen Institute of Archaeology- UCLA applicants
Forsaken in LA replied to Daisy123's topic in Anthropology Forum
I know that at least one is not Cotsen. I think it was coba. Check the results thread. -
Congrats coba! Who is your POI? Im an undergrad at UCLA right now so I was just curious.
-
I dont believe so. Cross listed though.

I've taken two classes with him, Talk and Body, and Communication in Education. He may be the best professor I had at UCLA. I felt like clapping after his lectures.

Reads like a syllabus to Charles Goodwin's class.
