  1. I grew up in New York, but I've since lived in Massachusetts, Louisiana, South Carolina, and did a brief stint in Virginia. Nobody I've spoken to has ever heard of SUNY/CUNY. Granted, these aren't professors or those directly involved in academia, given that I work in healthcare. However, I do not discount their opinion, because I work with highly educated individuals.
  2. Trying to write a blog on here, but I can't for the life of me figure out HOW. Where is this page hiding? I think I may need more coffee.

Munashi is correct. You need to request access. Usually the blogs are opened in late fall.

  3. STILL waiting for Fordham and NYU.
  4. None of the schools I applied to/looked into had a biology requirement. I vote no, especially if it's going to jack up your GPA.
  5. I can't help you in terms of the program, but I went to LSU for undergrad. It was a huge move for me, too, as I grew up in NYC. I can help you with the lay of the land and such things, if you should need it.
  6. You and I are living a similar life, just flipped. I was born and raised in NYC, went to LSU for undergrad, and have recently been accepted to a handful of MSW programs, one being an ivy. My hope and dream was to go to Tulane for my MSW and thought the ivy was a pipe dream. Until I got in, that is. So now I'm stuck between Tulane and Penn. My father claims that choosing Tulane would be the biggest mistake and I would regret it for the rest of my life. Anyway.. enough about me. How far along are you in your MSW program? If you're about to graduate and will be able to get a job in NYC, I can't imagine why you'd be homeless. Rent is out of this world, but if you have a roommate, it's managable. My brother (who goes to Cooper Union) is paying somewhere in the neighborhood of $900 for his shoebox, which is ridiculously cheap for the neighborhood, but again, it's a shoebox. What is your career goal? Do you plan to use your MSW? Is the masters in creative writing just an excuse to go to NYU? If you're dying to go to NYU, why not just apply to their social work program and call it a day, rather than spending however many more thousands upon thousands of dollars to get a second masters? I get the unsupportive family thing, since my parents didn't talk to me for 3 months when I told them I was going to LSU. But they got over it and your parents will, too. If you want to go (and it'll make financial sense), then go.
  7. Have to beg for forgiveness for being two weeks over my deposit deadline in the morning. If they accept my apology, I'll have deposits at two schools. I can't make a decision. Lawd have mercy.

Deep breath. Relax. Everything will work out.

  8. I went to LSU (which is in Baton Rouge) for undergrad, but I spent a lot of time in New Orleans (boyfriend lived there) and I adore the city. Actually, all of Louisiana is wonderful, so make sure you travel around! If you need help with places to go, things to see, where to live, etc, let me know. I'd move back in a heartbeat. I'm still struggling with my decision to turn down Tulane, but I try not to think about it, lol. I'll probably move back down there after I finish my MSW.. in Pennsylvania. Brrr.
  9. I worked a very high-stress full time job during my first masters. I graduated on time, in four semesters, with a 3.83 GPA. It's possible, but it's definitely not easy. I didn't get out much
  10. My application was on her desk in front of me when I was sitting in her office. Don't panic
  11. My patients have been so violent tonight. It's not a Monday and it's not a full moon. It's no longer February and it didn't rain today. WHAT GIVES?!
  12. Congrats! I'm pretty sure they're admitting one person per day.
  13. My graduate thesis advisor (who ironically has an MSW himself, though he taught/worked in criminal justice) told me at the beginning of admission season that many MSW programs are quicker to admit the older student with a few years of work and life experience under their belt. I would venture to guess that my work experience really boosted my application, and I'm sure it will yours. So, definitely work, work, work. Prove that you can work under pressure, multitask, etc. Those were all things brought up in my interview. I think retaking the GRE would be beneficial, as well. Tone down the SOP and make sure you're asking the right people for LORs. And above all else, don't be discouraged. I've found that a lot of my "rejections," literally and figuratively, have been blessings in disguise.
  14. That shouldn't make a difference. I'd definitely look into fixing that if I were you.
  15. That was mardi gras break. Call her again, shes very nice.
  16. Oh, there's plenty of unsolicited advice when it comes to graduate school. The debt is just one small portion of the flack/advice I've gotten. If it puts you at ease any, I just got back from talking with the professor I worked under for my graduate assistantship, and he went on for awhile about choosing Boston University over other less expensive schools when he was in my position. He said he took the risk and decided to pay for the BU name because he hoped it would one day pay off. When he got hired to teach at my previous university, the department head said that BU stood out to them and put him higher on their list, even before they met him. So for him, it got him his "dream job" and it all worked out, even if he's still paying on his loans. I don't mean to pry, but why would you be responsible for medical bills you incurred as a minor? You were not the one being billed, so I'm not sure why it hit your credit, versus the legal guardian who was billed for the treatment.
  17. I was under the impression that PSLF covered any federal or state government organization, any non-profit organization, and something about religion based organizations. I'm sure there are PLENTY of clinical jobs with supervision that fall under those categories. Any public hospital, public school, public health clinic, etc.
  18. Don't forget about the Grad Plus loans. Apparently, that's where the bulk of grad students' loan money comes from. You can take out loans for tuition, books, living expenses, etc through Grad Plus. Also, there are private banks (USAA, Wells Fargo, etc) that do student loans with interest rates on a sliding scale. However, if you find yourself in a bind and out of a job in a few years, they're not willing to negotiate like federal loan banks are. I, too, had zero interest in state schools. There's only one in my current state that offers an MSW and I had no interest in attending that school. So, I'm looking at A LOT of debt in order to attend the school of my dreams. To the tune of $150,000. I worried about it for a few weeks (okay, two months), but now I've chilled out and have put my faith in the income based repayment and the public service loan forgiveness plans.
  19. I knew they roll, but I didn't realize the deadline was so late. Especially given that they wanted my deposit so early. At any rate, it took them about a month to give me my decision. And that was around the Christmas/New Years holidays, too. But then again, they just took off for Mardi Gras, so they're probably in the same boat right now. That being said, did you call them during the Mardi Gras holiday? I had a lot of very prompt contact with them (via email, phone, and in person), so I'm quite surprised you can't get anyone on the phone. I think the woman I was talking to mostly was Mrs. Brown, but I'm not certain, and I'd hate to give you the wrong name, lol.
  20. I was under the impression that Ohio State was ranked pretty high.
  21. I'm pretty sure Dominos only tastes good at work in the middle of the night.

Nope, now that they revamped the recipe it tastes good all the time =)

  22. I don't have a whole lot of details, but I had a childhood friend go through the program and she really enjoyed it. She's been gainfully employed by the NYC department of education ever since. Sounds like a goog gig to me.
  23. University of Denver's website say that 95% of their MSW students receive funding. I'm inclined to believe that because they offered me $36,000 total and I didn't receive funding from any other school thus far. Of course, my deposit went to the most expensive school on my list, lol. Figures.
  24. If you're still waiting to hear back from six other schools, then wait?
  25. There date to accept admission was March 7th. At least that's what it said on my acceptance letter. You may want to give them a call? I submitted my application in mid-November, completed sometime in December (LOR writers dragged on) and was accepted via regular mail in mid-January. As much as I hated to do it, I declined my offer and will be going to a different school in the fall. Good luck to ya! New Orleans is my favorite place in the world.
