  1. Nope, but I am an east coaster, and I'll be at ESS in Baltimore and SWS in Nashville if you're attending! Good luck on presenting; I'm sure you'll be great!
  2. Oh Boba, I'm so sorry to hear those reactions =( We're definitely here to support you!!!
  3. @Maleficent: Of course! I'm so happy for you!! oh my, no ... no news yet. I wish ... Oh, how I wish I would hear something soon. I just want to be accepted one place, that's all! So I know I can go to school in the Fall. However, I might be hearing from Maryland soon, but that's also the most competitive program I applied to! @SheWrote: Oh my goodness, I'm so so sorry my post got you down ... but they could have more than one round of acceptances coming out as those accepted decide not to attend Duke! It's not over til it's over, as Maleficent has told us here =) Where all have you applied?
  4. Congrats to those with the Duke acceptances that have been rolling out!!!
  5. Not many folks understand why this is so important to me, either! People have literally said to me "You shouldn't let that hold you back from achieving your dream," to which I say "But ... but I've applied to places nearby that I want to attend, so nothing is holding me back ... " Of course there's a dream school in Massachusetts that I'd wanna attend (the thought alone makes me swoon), but I seriously doubt I'd make it there anyway, and I wouldn't like being so far away from here!
  6. Crucial BBQ, your post about the sheer cost of applying is so true!! I "only" paid $225 total, but I only applied to three schools! If I had to apply to 11 or 22, I'd be having a conversation with my bank going something like this: Bank: Gingin6789, you overdrew your bank account. Is there a reason for this? Me: Oh ... yes, sorry, I was applying to grad school Bank: Oh yes, school does get expensive Me: No, no, I think you misunderstood me ... It was from applying to grad schools! Before we get into debt from schools, we can go into debt from application fees haha. Note: I DO understand why they charge for applications; I know they need money! This is just my ribbing way of coping with the cost =p I'm not trying to complain, just to joke about the situation.
  7. My first conference is in two days! I'm simultaneously elated, honored, and nervous!

You'll be awesome. It feels good to jump into the scholarly conversation.

Awww thank you, Academicat! This is a fairly relaxed and nurturing conference, from what I've been told =) We sit at a table of about four others and present our findings in a roundtable format. My professor told me that her table-mates would ask "So, what story will you be telling today?" and folks will be eating their breakfast at the table and everything ... I hope it feels as much like a meal with friends/family as it sounds! =)

  8. A universal hatred that is apparently really salient in the admission decision process ... much like the GRE!!!! Oh wow, that is fantastic! That experience is gonna be great for you!! I'm doing my first two conferences this week and in two weeks ... both on the east coast though! I'm nervous, but excited! And you're right ... there are always snags to research! It sounds like you have a great mindset regarding research!
  9. I am so sorry to hear that, mormlib =( That's absolutely heartbreaking to hear that they abandoned you during such a crucial project!! Are you still presenting? If so, at which conference will you be presenting? It sounds like we both have things we're uneasy about on our SOP. Hopefully they can see we really were doing our best to make a great SOP!! I did have my thesis advisor look over it, and she said it was ok before adding "I absolutely hate Personal Statements ... " She just doesn't like them, overall! Oh thank you!! I am uneasy about my dang quant score, but we'll see how it pans out! I think you're gonna be fine, too. =))
  10. Amen!!!! I was finishing my thesis and graduating in December, so I was just trying to get everything in! I did absolutely no networking, and I didn't put names in my SOP =( I've been kicking myself ever since! I did get fortunate, however, and my POI for one of the schools I applied to (who I didn't mention by name in my SOP) is presiding over the presentation session where I'm presenting at a conference in a couple weeks! Later that evening, I get to have dinner with her and a few others! So, I'll be networking *after* submitting my application. I also talked to a graduate student who is currently in another program I applied to, and she said I should be ok so long as I mentioned my interests. So ... it's nice to have that reassurance. We can do this!!
  11. Welcome, moda, and congratulations on your acceptance! You can rely on us! I've definitely been relying on these forums, too! I wish folks would post stats, too. We're not gonna criticize you, we promise! If anything, we're gonna love you! I think some folks posting in results search might not even know this sociology sub-forum exists ... I hope that's not the case!
  12. My good friend will be at a table that same time at SWS, but I'll try to swing by your table as well because your research sounds SO great!! Unfortunately, I can't attend your presentation at ESS because I'll be at a reception for the Repro Mini-Conference ... but your second paper sounds amazing as well! I'm glad, too!! It's so great to meet you! Cylon6 is also attending ESS! That's so great to hear about your interest in Ann Bell, too! Hey, that's ok that she's not your first choice, I understand! I think UDel has so many great people with distinct specializations!!
  13. Delaware!!! Me too!!! Ann Bell is gonna be at ESS if she's a POI for you! She's presiding over the session where I'm presenting. I freaked out when I found out!
  14. I got an email from my POI inviting me to a reception for our "mini-conference" within the bigger conference. I thanked her for the invitation and told her I was looking forward to meeting her, but I couldn't bring myself to say I was applying to her school's program because I didn't want to sound pushy, I guess?? Well, it's kind of awkward for me. I just graduated in December, so I don't qualify for undergrad funding, and I don't qualify for grad student funding because I'm not a grad student. I think one of the conferences I'm attending might have a low-income program that can reimburse qualifying members up to $300. My thesis advisor also said she's going to look into departmental funds to see if I can get about $200 more in reimbursement! So, if I get that $500, I'll be quite happy. I also get reimbursed $60 for working at the registration table of one of the conferences =) So yes, I would advise keeping an eye out for any sort of funding possibility, no matter if you're an undergrad and qualify for clear-cut funding or if you're in a weird situation like I am! =)
  15. Thank you!!! Best of luck to you as well, PeterRY! Keep me updated on how you're doing! =)
  16. Absolutely lovely to hear!!! The title of my paper is "Religious Frames and the Contraceptive Clause of the Affordable Care Act" I'm presenting on Friday at the 7:15 AM Roundtable Sessions (Table 16) at SWS and I'm presenting on Friday at 8:30 AM at the Policies Around Reproductive Health Care and Access Mini-Conference at ESS! What are the titles of your papers? I hope to see you there!! And welcome to the thread! Where all have you applied? =)
  17. I got ... really lucky, I found out. Nope, I didn't hear back from any schools yet. However, I was lamenting the fact that I didn't mention actually professor/faculty names in my SOP. Instead, I listed my interests and sent them my thesis. I was looking one of the program's websites and I thought "Man, it would be so cool to work with this professor ... her research interests match mine perfectly!" I'm presenting at a conference in a few weeks, and so I checked to see if anyone from the programs I'm applying to will be present while I'm presenting! The presiding member of my presentation session? The very person I was so interested in!! I get to present my thesis findings in front of her! On top of that, I get to go to a reception with her and a few others later that evening! This made me feel better about applying to just three schools!
  18. I expect to be doing more of the same of what I'm doing now. I'm basically my grandmother's caretaker here at home, and I get about 10 hours per week at my part-time retail job. I'm an awkward December graduate, so I have this chunk of 8 months or so before I go back to school. If I get rejected from all three places? I did mention in the "If I don't get accepted, I'll ... " thread that I'll likely retake the GRE and try to find a better job before reapplying for 2015.
  19. It's definitely in my top three, but I did only apply to three schools =p It's actually tied for second! I'm so pumped to hear back from them sometime in the near future! I know it's a pretty darn competitive program, but I'm hoping they'll consider me!
  20. Rync, I agree. Judging from years past, this week could be the week for Maryland acceptances and, perhaps, rejections. It could be next week, too, though! We'll see!!
  21. Well it was good that you checked. Hahaha grandpop graduated ages ago! If you time traveled, perhaps, you could have met him. =p He enjoyed his time there!!
  22. Third'd! I completely agree! Congrats to all accepted elsewhere today!!
  23. My grandpop went to St. Francis for undergrad and Villanova for graduate school for History. Yep, he was Catholic, going to Catholic-affiliated schools throughout his entire education. He taught a Catholic high school for 36 years after that. Contrast that with my thesis advisor who is Jewish and was considering a teaching position at Villanova at one point. So they liked both my grandpop and my thesis advisor, too. I think what matters most to them is the strength of your application. Your question is a good one though. Plus, some religiously affiliated graduate schools are SO selective that they simply don't have the room to be selective based on religious affiliation.
  24. My top choice is my top choice because: 1. one or more faculty members have research interests that match mine perfectly 2. it is a great program overall that gained my thesis advisor's immediate approval when I asked for advice 3. location is close to home 4. great opportunities for funding 5. I'll have free lodging with my boyfriend's parents if I attend (they live 20 minutes from campus and offered to let me live with them if I go there) 6. beautiful campus where I instantly felt at home
