The Conference Search and Submission

I seriously doubt they're disappointed in you!!! Your stats and academic background look really good, and I know so many folks who are waiting to hear back from programs!! This wait is torture, but you will get through!!! I'm here for you! I understand wanting to go to the same place as your friend, too!! It's comforting to know that acceptances go out in waves! Keep me updated on what you hear!! =) Just two days til March 1! Oh, thank you!!! I worked so hard for about a year on my undergrad thesis. I loved examining the intersection of religion and contraception in the media! The philosophical intersections are also so interesting to examine!! Your professor sounds pretty amazing, too! I also have a feeling we would have gotten along!! -
OH no!!! Who knew a birthday message could induce such disappointment?? I would have been disappointed, too!! engphiledu, that would be AMAZING if that happened! Can you imagine how fulfilling that would feel??

That sounds .... delightfully perfect for stress eating! I am jealous! Reason number 4594969063 to visit Scandinavia!! Around Easter, we have the homemade peanut butter "eggs" that churches make to raise funds, but it doesn't take a lot of time to eat them, and they're so rich that I can usually only handle one at a time haha.

My thesis advisor always told me "Nervous is good; Panic is bad." It's not a bad thing to be nervous because it shows you're really passionate about what you're presenting!!! I know what you mean, though. My area of interest contains a small, tight-knit group (I'm interested in the sociology of reproduction within the larger field of medical sociology. My thesis advisor made up the title of "the repro mafia" to describe the group), and presenting to at least five big-time members of the group was absolutely nervewracking for me! I just kept looking toward the few people in the audience I knew, and their smiles and understanding nods kept me going!! Seriously, it's the most comfortable I've ever felt while presenting! When it's your own research that you've spent so much time with, and when it's an audience who knows the subject matter as well, it all falls into place. =) THANK YOU!!! I was ecstatic when two of the universities accepted me! I'm happy that I got my acceptances before my rejection. I awoke to my rejection early on a Sunday morning, and I simply read the rejection letter, texted my boyfriend and family, rolled over, and went back to sleep! Lehigh and Delaware really set my mind at ease! =) You have all of your schools to hear back from, right? I hope they get back to you soon! If it's any help, I heard back from the university with the LATEST deadline FIRST! I was so shocked cause the deadline was February 1 and I heard back on the 17th! I also heard back from the university with the deadline of January 15 on February 17th as well!! -
Anyone else stress-drinking coffee? It's the hug in a mug I need during situations like this.

engphiledu, your posts are full of gold!!!! XD ALSO, how about those STUPID ADS you get in the mail with the GINORMOUS envelope that looks like it could be an ACCEPTANCE PACKAGE. SERIOUSLY?! I did research on the contraceptive clause of the Affordable Care Act and looked into Catholic views on the matter through signing up for a free magazine, and now Catholic charities send me huge envelopes of ads asking me for my invisible, non-existent money! So deceptive ;______________; And then I hate myself for feeling mad at a charity. The children!!!

Great points, Maleficent and SocGirl! I know I was browsing the decision threads from previous years to gain some insight into the decision-making process, specifically for sociology graduate programs!!! I can't wait to post my final decision here! I should know sometime next week!

Yes, I know my conferences and preparation for conferences really helped in the waiting game!! When is the New Jersey College English Association Conference? -

My first beer. I was at a party shortly after turning 21, so my friends were naturally telling everyone I turned 21 just a couple weeks before. I was told of the "glory of Pabst" from my friend's fiance and his friend. They told me a story about how they once got caught up in a fierce bidding war for a Pabst folding chair. They didn't win the chair. They then, of course, passed me one and strongly encouraged me to partake in the "glorious nectar." It wasn't very good. [Later that night, a group of party-goers, including an off-duty trooper, were trying to convince me to do "just one shot" of Jager or however it's spelled. The truth is, I don't like drinking too much, especially things that don't taste good (I can usually have one mixed drink and I'm content and don't want any more)! The Pabst was unpleasant enough! So, they kept heckling me, and I broke down, dissolving into tears in front of them. Everyone, including Mr. trooper, immediately changed their tune and were all very apologetic about trying to force me to drink. Pretty embarrassing, but they stopped pestering me!]

I'll be one of the falsifiers of the "if introverted, then in gifted program" hypothesis. I never qualified for gifted programs in elementary and middle school (A/B student. I never had straight A's until college!) and I dropped out of high school, so I definitely never qualified for any gifted program there. As for your second point, you can definitely be social and good at public speaking/teaching and still be introverted. Introversion involves an individual drawing energy from themselves instead of others (for example, a social, outgoing person who feels great wearing what they're wearing because they, themselves, like it). Conversely, those who are extroverted and draw their energy from others can still be shy (for example, a quiet person who feels great wearing what they're wearing because of any compliments they receive from others on their outfit. Homely examples, but you get the point). I know the Youth and Government program in my early high school days made me more social and apt to speak in front of others (mandatory impromptu speeches every week), and working in a retail environment for six years has conditioned me to easily interact with folks I've never met (well, most of them ... ). However, I do end up drawing energy from myself more than I draw energy from others (that does not mean that I do not draw any energy from others). So, I'm not surprised you're introverted at all, cause it sounds like we're similar in that respect

HP has some of those hybrids! The price is decent, and I was considering one, but there's not a whole lot of hard drive space if I remember correctly (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I also think the screens are smaller (which is totally understandable since it's, you know, supposed to be tablet-sized). I wasn't sure what I thought about HP before, but I really like mine right now =)

Of course, Sociolite! And I hear that the summers there are less humid as well =) I hope you enjoy your time there!!

I'm gonna bump this again since there's a recruitment conference Sunday-Tuesday going on! There is great info on lodging and Newark life nestled in this thread!

I agree, Maleficent =) Congratulations, Sociolite!!!! I'm so excited for you!!!!! *celebrates with you, offering you a dessert and delicious beverage of your choice!!*

Cultsoc, I don't think the downvotes are because we can't "hack the truth." I think it's because your post came across as attacking another user who was trying to offer some sincere advice to graduate school applicants. After that, you did offer some advice, but then closed your post with more attacks toward the same user. You also referred to some grad school programs as "mickey mouse programs." I have no idea what that means because I had no idea that was a term, but I'm assuming it's pretty insulting. Another user than posted their response, and you were rude to her, saying she had somehow hopped on a bandwagon in a thread of ... just a few users. Hardly a bandwagon. This is why you received downvotes and why your posts are not well-received, and why your advice is not being properly processed. Advice gets lost when it's wedged within insults. You could have private messaged Darth to let him know what you thought, then offered JUST your advice in this thread, or you could have phrased your sentiment in a less insulting way (e.g. "Darth, I don't think negotiation works in most cases; you have to be careful when doing so ... " etc.) You're absolutely right in that negotiation doesn't work in all cases. That advice was lost in your tirade against the first user, your backhanded comment toward another user, and the rest of our "bandwagon." So ... can we keep this thread about decisions and decision-making advice instead of insulting folks?

Yes, the round table atmosphere was so warm and cultivating for conversation on everyone's research topics! I really enjoyed it! Presenting to smaller groups has been such a wonderful experience for me so far =) I agree with you on the philosophy undergrad experience! My education and life ended up so much richer as a result of the philosophy program! Woo! That is definitely an ambitious goal, and I wish you the best of luck on that! -
*stares at giant bag of cheese curls sitting next to me* I'm not ... *takes a handful of cheese curls out of the bag* ... stress eating ... I have no idea what you're talking about ... You say: "But gingin, you've already heard from your all of your schools ..." *munching noises continue* I've got a recruitment visit coming up and decisions to make. Therefore, cheese curls.

I shift between INFJ and ENFJ. This time, I got INFJ.

As a Pennsylvanian, I always get confused when I hear people say "Penn" by itself when referring to either Penn State or the University of Pennsylvania. After someone says "Penn," I have to ask "State? Or UPenn?" Or I ask "'We are!' or 'U?'" I also had several friends who attended Bucknell University for undergrad, so whenever folks on here say "BU," I have to remember that they likely don't mean Bucknell. Luckily, the most confusing acronym for the universities I applied to is UMD (University of Maryland). I refer the other two universities as simply "Lehigh" or "UDel," which folks can usually figure out.

I have an HP Pavilion 15.4" touch-screen laptop. I got a laptop with such a big screen because I really like having the number keypad to the right of the keyboard. I do love it a lot, but I am still getting used to Windows 8. I also invested in a 19" TV that I use as a second monitor. It helps SO MUCH with doing research, and the TV was less expensive than a new computer monitor.

Hot and sour soup, pork dumplings with a sauce made of vinegar and soy sauce, beef stroganoff, lots of soups, pastas (mushroom ravioli!!!!!), and noodles. Maybe teriyaki noodles. Mmm. I need to go make lunch now. I will be so lucky if I end up living with my boyfriend's family while I go to grad school near their residence. My boyfriend's dad is an EXCELLENT cook! I will help him cook, clean dishes, and learn his masterful chef ways ...
