  1. OH, I see!! That is a very good question! It was a thesis for sociology, so I didn't delve into the intersection of Descartes into my topic, but I'm sure that would be a really interesting way of looking at it! I'll have to look into that Cartesian intersection =) Thanks for the input!!
  2. This is what I meant!! Sorry if my post implied otherwise!! I was reading Descartes in my Modern Philosophy class.
  3. I don't care much for Descartes, but I have a feeling that I might have been channeling my frustrations with my thesis onto him. I was just beginning to solidify my topic and read through all of the literature for my literature review, and having to sit and try to digest the Meditations made me want to throw the book at the wall. It was probably the content of his work that drove me crazy, but just getting started on my thesis wasn't helping Carty's case either ...
  4. I am also in this same boat. Within a larger conference, there is a "mini-conference" for a more specialized area of interest! I'll be presenting at that conference. The presider? My POI at one of my schools! Now, the conference is less than 20 days after the deadline, so I am simultaneously elated and terrified about presenting in front of her. Moreover, I'm going to a reception dinner with her that same evening! *hyperventilates* I'm so happy to hear you've been accepted! Congratulations! For everyone else, here's a word about being rejected and seeing your POI at a conference: A person I met at a aconference said that they jokingly said to their POI at this conference "Hi, I'm ____ and I recently got rejected by your program," just in a lighthearted, "no hard feelings," almost joking way. After they talked, the POI said "I'm going to reconsider your application, actually ..." So, anything can happen! Put yourself out there!
  5. Oh, I definitely had a chuckle at the word "ten," as well!!! You are not alone!!
  6. Oh, I know what you mean!! And as for the emails from other schools, I think ETS gave my email away when registering for the GRE, cause I get ads for so many grad schools for programs that are in no way related to my field! So my heart leaps whenever I see "university" only to see it's a program for biomedical engineering. Not that that is a bad field, but I am in no way educated for such a program! Thank you very much for your well-wishes. She is doing ok! She has recurring back problems and it was flaring up again! We had to take her to the ER instead of the doctor's office because of appointment and transportation issues, but she is resting comfortably now =)
  7. Vicstory, that is such a heartwarming story!! It sounds like you got interviewed for a great program that really takes care of its students. :-)it may have been a horrific interview process, but it's cool to see that they really have your back, even before an official offer of acceptance!! Also, awkward moment just now: I almost squeed when I saw "sociology" in the subject line of an email in my updates folder, but it was just an update for an upcoming conference. What makes it awkward is that I'm in the ER waiting to hear about my gran. A squee of delight in the ER is generally frowned upon...
  8. Oh my goodness, please tell me they were understanding and didn't fault you for your kidney's terrible timing!!
  9. Will I get accepted somewhere with funding? As I see it, yes Will I get accepted to work with my POI at my top choice? Outlook is not so good Will I hear back this week? Yes
  10. walter, this has been one of the worst winters in a while for us. It's always been just enough accumulation, ice, or temperature to have school and work cancelled multiple times for millions of residents!! Last winter was unusually mild, so it probably made the decision process that much faster!
  11. I've spent so much time waiting it out on grad cafe that this conversation happened at a conference with a stranger: Other person: so where have you applied? Me: Maryland, Lehigh, and Delaware; it has been so tough waiting it out! Other person: oh actually, I think I've seen you around on Grad Cafe. Yep. A stranger recognized me because I post so often on grad cafe hahaha. This person was super nice though, and I'm so glad I got to meet them!!
  12. Thank you very much!! Yes, my latest GPA is better. It is great to know this!
  13. Woah, socgirl, you are in the know!!! Thanks for the info. I haven't applied to any of those places, but the information is SUPER useful!! I hope you hear from CUNY, I haven't heard anything about that program!
  14. For Penn, specifically, be it UPenn or Penn State, the reason why acceptances/rejections are being sent out later this year could be a variety of reasons ... but a BIG one might be the weather!! Down here in central PA, my alma mater has cancelled at least four days of classes when, in years past, they wouldn't cancel class for anything! I'm sure this weather has pushed back adcom meetings across the northeast which really sucks! I was thinking about how UMD sent out rejections/acceptances earlier last year than this year (still waiting!), and then I remembered they've probably been hit pretty hard as well!! Or, I could be completely wrong and they're just taking longer than usual for reasons besides the weather!
  15. Beefaroni is essential! But late nights working on my thesis drove me to yell, swear, and throw things, and I usually do none of those things. Granted, I would throw things like my pencil, but still... Extreme for me...
  16. Here's one... Having a flight delayed to the point where the pilot is not allowed to fly any more cause he's been flying too long for the day, and having to get a hotel room at 2 am to catch a cab to the airport at 5 am to get a flight at 8am. I've barely had time to think about schools or Grad Cafe!
  17. I would say business casual, but I found out this weekend that conference styles vary substantially! I went to my very first conference this weekend. I forgot dress shoes, so I had to buy some cheap new ones on the way to the hotel where the conference was being held. I went to the reception and, of course, my feet were killing me. I still had my cozy boots stuffed into my giant purse, and one of the officers of the conference and a professor of a top 25 university in my field said "Yeah, just change into your boots!" Even though the boots looked ridiculous with my dress pants, nobody cared! My thesis advisor wore hiking boots and a fleece half-zip pullover sweater. There were folks who were dressier, but they were apt to tell folks to just be as comfortable as possible! As for presenting, we sat at roundtables with a maximum of five other people present and we talked about our research and findings over breakfast. I'm going to a conference in two weeks where I'm almost positive that comfy boots will not be acceptable in dress code, and where I'll be standing in front of a larger audience to present! I would definitely ask someone who has attended this specific conference about their advice on dress code. I hope my anecdote shows the fluidity of conference dress style and presentation style =)
  18. I know some schools roll their acceptances/rejections in waves! Like they'll send out a batch of 4 or 5, wait, and then roll out another batch. I understand why you're anxious, though!!
  19. I have a question for you ... you said "latest GPA." I went to two colleges, so I have two different GPAs. Does this mean they MIGHT only consider my latest GPA? I'm happy either way, but I'm just wondering. As for OP's question, I would also recommend having your recommenders address your lower scores in their letters. My thesis advisor was talking to her colleague at a top 25 school and he said that they look for Quant scores in the 60th percentile range. If the applicant didn't have a score in that range, he said that would "have to be explained." So, there's still hope, and if the scores are EXPLAINED by you and hopefully your recommenders, then you stand a higher chance of being considered!
  20. It's been giving me this message for a while, but I saw that last year and the year before that folks have been notified by phone call or email as well (despite the ASF saying decision correspondence can't be given via email ... But, I think what the ASF refers to in that case is a student emailing/calling them saying "What's the decision for my application?" rather than a POI or the University sending an official email to/calling the applicant). Additionally, see the following from http://www.socy.umd.edu/graduate/faq: Q: Has a decision been made on my application? A: You should be able to view a PDF of your decision letter through your ASF. Once you log in, click on "Check Application Status" and click on the words "Decision Letter" to view a PDF. I'm sure they'll send an official snail mail letter, but these might be some things to keep in mind. Thank you for checking things out for us though! I hope this information helps or complements yours in some way!
  21. This conference is absolutely exhausting ... but so worth it and so much fun!

  22. I saw at least one Cornell acceptance or rejection ... check out the Results Search! I'm not sure about Berkeley or UMD, but I really wanna hear from UMD soon!
  23. We just played a game of Monopoly that lasted a few hours. That was an awesome way to pass the time!!
  24. Hey, that's ok!! I hope it changes for you soon, too! In the meantime, I hope your job goes well =) Thank you very much, Sociolite, and best of luck to you, too!!
  25. This made me make some unintelligible noise of excitement. I really want to hear from places!! I'll be in Nashville at a conference though, so I won't be checking back here as often as I usually do that day!
