Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
gingin6789 replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
Your grandma sounds like my grandma!! She definitely was talking about it to folks AFTER I got accepted, but the conversations went like this: Gran: Gingin, I just can't remember ... which schools accepted you again? Me: Lehigh ... and Delaware hasn't given me official word yet, bu --- Gran: LEHIGH. THAT was it! For some reason, I thought it was DUQUESNE!! That's what I told your aunt and uncle! I don't know how I didn't remember ... Me: It's ok, gran, it's hard for me to keep all of this straight, too ... I don't know WHERE she got Duquesne ... I think it's because she always thinks of Catholic universities for grad school since grandpop went to a Catholic university for his graduate degree (Villanova). Either way, it's very sweet she's telling my family, and very sweet that she's telling them! -
That's so amazing!! I'm so happy for you!! Thank you so much! I've heard from all of my schools (yay!), so the wait is over for me!

Fall 2014 Sociology Interviews and/or Acceptances
gingin6789 replied to Maleficent999's topic in Sociology Forum
Hey, pinoy, I don't know the 7 programs you've applied to, but are they all straight PhD? And are you applying with your BA? If so, then I would try applying to some master's programs or master's programs that are folded into a PhD program. That could give you a great edge in the PhD application process. Either way, I'm really really sorry to hear about this =( I know you are a great and truly worthy candidate. Take the time to process this before moving on. I had a pretty traumatizing event in my life that I just glossed over by directing my focus elsewhere, and this blindly optimistic attitude so rampant in our country can be really damaging; glossing over something so life-changing actually really harmed my emotional well-being in the end. So, I'm not going to tell you "chin up, move on" right away. I'll be here with you, virtually, with a beverage of your choice, a warm meal, awesome fuzzy slippers, a good movie, and lots of hugs. I'm here for you, pinoysoc! -

I think this person just wanted some bourbon and chocolate, in the end! Glad to hear they have two offers to make that chocolate taste even sweeter!! =) -
*Dentist walks into the room, EngineerGrad sits in the dentist chair that is facing away from the doorway* Dentist: Ok, EngineerGrad, how are you feeling now? EngineerGrad: *turns around in the chair, smiling from ear-to-ear* I've never been better!! Bring it on!! Or at least that's how I imagined you, pre-wisdom teeth removal. Seriously, that's the best time to receive the news!! That kind of happiness can easily overcome pre-surgery nerves!!

Mightmaus has been SUPER helpful in answering all of my questions about Lehigh University! I'll ask another question here so that others can see the answer as well. Riverport Apartments look super great! I'd love to live there if I can financially swing it (I think the stipend will be enough!)! Have you heard anything about Saucon Village? I know that it's listed on the website as graduate student housing. Saucon View is also adjacent to Saucon Village, and it looks like the university shuttle swings by Saucon Village!

I just laughed out loud at that rejection message and your comment while waiting at the hairdresser's. That made my day, and that's saying something cause I'm treating myself to wings later. -
Ah, the inevitable heart flutter... The day I learned one of the programs I applied to was sending out acceptances via email, I was engaged in a lengthy email thread with my thesis advisor, former professor, and classmate. We were arranging logistics for a conference that weekend, so I couldn't ignore my email, and I DEFINITELY couldn't suppress the heart flutter.

I guess the number of applications depends on your situation. I was pretty limited in where I could apply because location and fit were such strong determining factors! So, I applied to 3. Luckily, I was a strong candidate for M.A. programs, and the programs were a great fit. Three applications with $75 application fees for each meant I spent $225. ETS sends your GRE scores for free to up to four universities, so I didn't pay anything in the way of GRE scores. I did want to apply to a fourth school, but it turns out they closed their M.A. program in my field and forgot to update the website. Anyway, I got accepted to two of the three programs I applied to, and I got rejected by one, presumably because of fit (their focus is heavy in gender, work, and family and social stratification, where my focus is in religion and the sociology of reproduction that is nestled within the larger field of medical sociology). Instead of thinking of number of applications, check out a guide to graduate departments in your field if they make one, and narrow your choices down by: 1. your specific interests within your field 2. location, and 3. whether it's a terminal master's program, a master's on the way to a doctorate program, or just a straight doctorate program. (Which one do you want most? If you're not sure, maybe find a balance of all three within your applications.) I think those three factors will help you get the number of applications you need. =) ALSO, consult with your professors. There were three programs I was interested in that I didn't apply to because the professors I asked about those programs immediately shook their head right after I mentioned the universities' names.

We had cheetos and fritos in our student dorm vending machines. Not that those are bad things ... but a burger sounds awesome, especially if it is a good quality burger!

Express. I bought pants there for a job four years ago, and they're still in great shape and so comfortable. I always go with the "Columnist: barely boot" fit: http://www.express.com/clothing/Women/Columnist+Pants/cat/cat320072 "Holy cow, gingin," you say, "those are expen---" I cut you off mid-word and respond, "Four. years. These pants LAST!" As for shirts, this is my stand-by. It is the same shirt in three different colors (periwinkle, a greyish-purple, and the deep red shown in this link): http://www.express.com/catalog/product_detail.jsp?productId=8549136&categoryId=cat320062 That shirt is great ... for me, at least. I'm kind of awkwardly built in that I have a fairly slim torso, small-chested, wide shoulders, and long arms. It's hard to find a dress shirt that fits properly. Most of the time, it either hangs like a box around my torso while fitting perfectly in the arms and shoulders, or it fits perfectly in the torso while I feel like I'm about to rip out the back of my shirt like the Hulk. So, a shirt like that in the colors listed above with a charcoal grey or black pair of awesome dress pants. As for shoes? A VERY old pair of dress shoes that is still in decent shape, is "walkable," doesn't make my feet hurt. I actually don't know anything about the socials and dinners, etc. That awesome mod cloth dress linked above looks awesome for dressier occasions. In case you missed it: http://www.modcloth.com/shop/dresses/work-with-me-dress-in-black Speaking of which, Kamisha, WHAT did you do??? NOW I have to buy this dress because it is SO AMAZING. Thank you!!! I LOVE dresses with sleeves!!!!! As for this question: I would say whatever is going to keep you less distracted and more focused during the tours/interview process. If I wore contacts, I'd have the urge to rub my eyes or put drops in during the visit, and if my hair is near my face, I can't focus. Hair can look professional whether it's worn up or down, and either glasses or contacts should be fine!

NOT a funny rejection, but one that is absolutely heartbreaking. This is a student with excellent GRE scores and a killer GPA who wrote: Whoever you are, just know that I wanted to reach through my screen and give you the biggest hug ever. This process is a killer, but please remember that this school's rejection does not determine your worth! That statement may have sounded cliche or cheesy to the point where it needed nachos to go with it, but EVERYONE should remember it! Just because you didn't fit a program's standards does not mean you're worthless. Now, this person's statement could have been completely sarcastic. If so, then I'm sorry for getting all sappy! -
Awwww yay!! Congratulations!!! My friend is in the PhD program in philosophy there! Congratulations, Stxhess and Rawrrr! That would be so cool if you two attended the same school! You'd both have a friend there right away =)

Thank you, Gnome! I understand what you're saying. I do think that the terms "introversion" and "extroversion" are conflated with "quietness" and "sociability," respectively. I used to think that's what the terms meant all the way up until an undergrad business writing class, where the professor really broke the concepts down and explained them thoroughly! As for social disorders, I can't say much (I simply don't know enough about them), but I can say that if someone absolutely cannot socialize or interact with others, it's likely not simply due to introversion. Something else must be in play in such cases because many introverted folks have the ability to socialize or feign sociability, even if they feel like they want to crawl out of their skin when interacting with strangers or a large group of acquaintances.

It really is the comfort drink to end all comfort drinks. Besides lovely hot cocoa. However, many people will retort that beer or alcohol is their comfort drink of choice, which is understandable! There's actually an entire thread in the philosophy sub-forum for beverages of choice during this process. I love that thread!
