  1. oh wow, I see!! Hey, I'm glad you have the day off =) Maybe you'll have the day off, but the schools you're applying to will still be open and you could hear back from them!! oh, wouldn't that be perfect??
  2. I haven't been off for President's Day at all in college ... I would check the websites of the places where you applied to see if they are open tomorrow! Some schools might be closed, but none that I know of!
  3. This is the only time in my life where I look forward to Mondays!! I hope we hear some news tomorrow too!
  4. What an amazing story!! Your interests are very specific to psych, so I don't know how "in demand" research in your areas of interest is (hello from sociology, by the way). I can tell you your research experience is a huge deal and will really help you. Additionally, that second undergrad gpa is good, and someone told me that they take the more recent gpa into account when considering your application. With working under your prof for so long, you're guaranteed a pretty thorough, awesome LOR as well. Make sure you explain your low quant score and back it up by saying how well you did in other quant-related classes in college. Have your recommenders explain it in their letters as well. Your writing score should be ok; 4.5 is good!!
  5. Oh, it would be so nice to be able to plan that!!! If I get into my top pick, I know where I'll be staying. Otherwise, I have no idea about lodging ...
  6. Just know that schools send notifications out in waves. As someone in the Sociology forum reminds us "it's not over til it's over." I know this wait is torturous!!
  7. Huge congratulations to all the acceptances today! *throws some confetti for you all*
  8. My boyfriend got into the only masters program he applied to with a cumulative GPA teetering right around a 3.0. He applied for a master's program in Emergency Management. He has tons of volunteer experience with organizations that help rebuild homes after natural disasters and the salvation army disaster service. He made a lot of great connections on campus during his undergraduate education with the EM department, and he has his undergrad degree in Meteorology which is a great complement to Emergency Management (which he also minored in as an undergrad). I'm not sure if he's fully funded or not, but they gave him a paid position working at the Center for Disaster Research and Education 20 hours a week on campus. They also said how they wanted to make an additional GA position just for him! One thing that helped him was his abundant volunteer experience. Also, he applied to grad school where he also attended undergrad, so they knew the exact intensity and rigor of the program he went through (our school's program is really tough -- for example, the only other highly ranked meteorology program in the state has lower math requirements than our school. They put our meteorology students in math classes that only math majors take and sometimes fail!), and they knew his intelligence, work ethic, and passion for Emergency Management were all top of the line. [As for the GRE, he didn't need to take them since he went to the same school for undergrad. This was the part I was most jealous of him for .... ]
  9. If you stay in the "The Lobby" forum here, there is a thread for those who have been accepted with a GPA below 3.0! You might wanna check that out! As for OT, specifically, there are sub-forums for individual disciplines within the "The Menu" category. They might have an OT forum for you where you can find out more about OT programs! [edit] link to the forums with some OT info! http://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/58-clinical-health/ [edit 2] Oh, I see you found that forum!! Sorry!! I hope someone here can help you!!
  10. Oh no, I forgot about President's Day! Thanks for reminding us, JewishSombrero! I thought it was Monday the 24th for some reason, rather than Monday the 17th! [EDIT] Actually, wait ... I've never had off in college for President's Day! I checked the academic calendars of all of the places I've applied, and those universities are open on President's Day. Paola, you should check the websites of the schools you've applied to in order to see whether or not those universities will be closed/open on President's Day.
  11. Congrats, curiously!! That's so awesome! I did see the first episode of Orange is the New Black! It is very good! I definitely needed to do the cleaning today though ... I ended up feeling very productive I'm pleasantly surprised to see it's been such a busy day for acceptance/interview/rejection notices!! I'm pretty sure we got over a foot of snow here (south-central PA)
  12. Bourdieu!!! Forgot to include him!! These days, I also enjoy the work of Gayle Sulik and her critical look at the pink ribbon industry. We read her book in sociology of health, and I got to meet her in Nashville last week. When my thesis advisor introduced me, I told Gayle, "I need a hug from you." ...I wish I could hug all of my favorite sociologists ...
  13. Haha that is a scary thought, but it absolutely won't happen!! Can they even do that??
  14. When I was working on pooling together my thesis findings from the mountain of coding sheets, I used a grid notebook. I was out of tablets, and while a grid tablet would have been even better, writing on grid paper was satisfying in a way I can't describe! I love the little boxes! I've also been reading a lot about using only certain kinds of pens here ... I like using the papermate pens that come in a 10 pack for about a dollar. They have black ink but are dark grey on the outside. I have them laying around everywhere, and they always write for me! Other ballpoint pens don't write properly cause of my lefty-ness.
  15. I love lucid dreaming. It requires sleeping and is a lot of fun! This goes along with boba felt's hobby of napping!
  16. Ohgoodness, this Zald sounds like someone I should check out!! Your other choices sound great as well. =)
  17. I can imagine the row of open tabs on your web browser ... I thought me having my three applications, Gmail, then Grad Cafe Results Search for sociology and the sociology grad cafe forum page was a lot haha. I'm right there with you!
  18. Impatientwaiting, I'm glad I could help!! Somehow it doesn't help me ... maybe I'll feel differently tomorrow though!!
  19. Hey all! This is my first shot at making a thread, so I just wanna know ... who are your favorite sociologists? Is Guy Debord's "Society of the Spectacle" the only thing that gets you through the holiday consumerist madness? Does the eloquence and depth of W.E.B. DuBois' "Second Self" make you weep with appreciation? How about the fascinating, rich studies on the complex, emotionally draining everyday lives of drug dealers by Peter and Patricia Adler (or perhaps their study on "the gloried self" of college athletes)? Does Goffman's "Stigma" resonate within your very soul because -- let's face it -- we're all discreditable? Voice your love for sociologists here. I hope this helps cut some of the anxious waiting game energy that we've been experiencing (or at least I have been experiencing). I personally love DuBois and Goffman! [if this topic doesn't belong here somehow, let me know! I got the idea from the Philosophy forum where this kind of thread was quite popular!]
  20. Very detailed and elaborate advice. My only addition would be that some people might do well aiding their studies for the GRE with some type of classroom prep classes. The face-to-face aspect of learning helps folks like me even more (in addition to studying on one's own, of course!!). Plus, I was studying for my GRE during the last semester of undergrad! I know I would have said "oh, I'll just study later ..." If I didn't have my classes and prep class teachers/tutor to hold me accountable. I wasn't lazy or anything, I was just overwhelmed and swamped with thesis work, and I know I would have chosen tweaking my thesis over studying for my GRE because test day seemed less immediate than my weekly meetings with my advisor! My quant GRE scores started in the 20th percentile, so I did manage to improve the quant score with classes and tons of studying. Even more studying from the resources you listed would have helped improve it further, I agree. I am just still thrilled that it's NOT in the 20th percentile now! Also, I agree that reading constantly doesn't do much to help your verbal score. That's a matter of knowing some really uncommon words and the testing format, itself, really well. Writing was something I didn't focus on. I basically dragged myself through it on test day just to get to Verbal and Quant. I could have scored higher, but I wasn't too upset because I have a great writing sample that I poured my heart, soul, intellect, and experience into. However, my thesis advisor presented this word of caution: sometimes adcoms may not know how much the thesis advisor was involved in the creation of the thesis. This made my head want to explode cause I worked so incredibly hard on my precious thesis. But she's right in that the GRE writing score is a more standardized way of looking at writing.
  21. Yes, key word is "new." We've had unusually high snowfall accumulations this season ... I think. There's still snow on the ground and we're getting dumped with about 10 inches tonight through tomorrow. My boyfriend reminded me that February is the snowiest month of the year (he's a meteorologist), but that doesn't ease the sting for me :'( That means it'll be a SLOW day tomorrow!! I'm assuming Lehigh and Maryland will be closed, and Delaware likely will, too. I posted elsewhere that there are no more TV shows that I can think of to binge on, so I will be doing TONS of cleaning to make the day move by more quickly!!
  22. All of the schools I've applied to will likely be closed tomorrow. I doubt there will be any updates tomorrow. How will I keep myself from checking my email "ten" times a day? I don't know of any TV shows I haven't already binged on. Tons of cleaning it is, then...
  23. If it makes you feel any better, I started here a couple weeks ago and I'm not on here as often now ... my time here has only declined slightly day-by-day, but a decrease is a decrease!
  24. I agree, Curiouslyoptimistic! hoping to hear from one school this week *fingers crossed* Avatarmomo, a big congratulations to you!! Pleased to see that both Brown sociology decisions were acceptances!
