  1. Hey all *curls up in the thread and settles in* Got 2 acceptances yesterday which was great, but I learned just how much someone resents me for even applying to these programs. And they said some very mean and hurtful things about me like how I'll *for sure* choose a program without letting my husband know, leaving him behind and destroying our marriage. It was a punch to the gut. This person said they loved me, and now they peg me as some she-demon who would leave her husband behind? The important thing is that, while the person who said this means a lot to me, my mom, my husband, and my siblings are all on my side, and they're the ones who are most important. So, this person turned my happy champagne into sad champagne last night. Ugh. Anyone else experience something like this?
  2. Yes, congrats to the Brandeis admit! I'm hoping to hear from them sometime soon now (good OR bad news, that is!)!
  3. Aw shucks!! You are too sweet! I'm so glad my posts can do that for you! That makes me so happy! I know exactly what you mean. Finding folks who have gone down a similar educational path is awesome. And it takes a while to be comfortable with our own story but for me, now I get to teach and show my students and colleagues about the invisible diversity within their own campus! Which I think is pretty cool :-) Thanks for your reply!! <3
  4. Sorry, just had to interject and say: Awesome! We basically have the same back story in this respect. :-) sorry it's off topic, it's just nice to find someone else with a similar non-traditional background! (although I know most of us here are non-traditional in some sense...just cool to see someone else with a GED!)
  5. PS! HopefulSocPhD, it's totally acceptable to feel frustrated, bitter, mad, upset, every emotion. So if people in real life don't understand why you're upset or try to get you to think positively so soon after you've been hurt or say "snap out of it", just forget them and work through what you're working with now. Feel it out. Everyone here would agree with me on this one, I think.
  6. Didn't contact ANY profs before applying, nor was I encouraged to. If it's an unwritten rule, it's one I missed to, @HopefulSocPhD. And you honestly make me so happy on these forums with your spirit and your adorable profile pic, and no matter whether you're happy, sad, frustrated, I'm here for you. You're a great friend to me, hope.
  7. @MaxWeberHasAPossecongratulations! @duBoisLivesyour username made my day! @HopefulSocPhDthank you!!
  8. Lol!!! Yes, born and raised! haha. Yeah, this year is way better than last year!! It's not nearly as cold this year, for which I'm thankful.
  9. Oh golly! Was your email from the DGS, too? Or a POI? Thank you for letting me know! and CONGRATULATIONS!!
  10. Oh nice! That sounds like an excellent conference! I hope you get the chance to visit Vanderbilt! I've only been on the edge of campus, but it seems like a very beautiful campus! Nashville is also fun! I've only been there for a conference, but it was a great town! Thank you so much! I hope so, too ... I hope and pray I'm on their list!
  11. I'm so happy to hear that your top choice is strongly considering you! That's amazing and well-deserved! Oh wow, would it happen to be ESS, the weekend of March 17th? If so, I'll be at ESS as well! I'm sure things will work out. NC State has their recruitment visit the weekend of March 17th, and they were so accommodating about me visiting the following weekend. They just said the visit would simply be less formal. So, I'm sure Vanderbilt can do something to help! Keep us posted! I hope they get back to you soon!
  12. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Wow that's amazing! Call from the DGS, I presume? but omg omg omg *crashes into a wall somehow* *gets some ice for my head* really excited to hear from Vanderbilt cause it was my undergrad thesis advisor's alma mater and I've only heard wonderful things about the program...
  13. Ha fans are so handy, mainly in the summer! However, I'm in the basement in the winter, so having a fan on this time of year wouldn't be good! I do thank you for the suggestion though.
  14. Thanks, everyone! Very excited for good news from Rutgers! Hope the funding comes through as well! Will anyone be joining me at the open house on March 2? WOW, it looks like Columbia and Brown folks are on the edge of their seats, and I'm on the edge of mine for Boulder because I heard their decisions have been made! As always, let's wait together. <3
  15. Accepted to Rutgers, wait listed for funding! *twirls about*
  16. Likely inebriated couple ran down my hallway past my apartment door and you'd SWEAR they were 12 ELEPHANTS instead of two humans! I really try to be understanding and accommodating, but getting woken up by SOME neighbor every night has really taken its toll. Yes, I do melatonin, I do the nice silicone earplugs, I do the sleep apps with white noise, I even bought special sleep headphones for $30... I'm just whining because it's always up to me to try to find ways to sleep, it's up to me to sleep on the couch instead of my bed, it's up to me to go up there and ask them to be quieter... It's never up to them to be courteous of others in the first place. /end whining
  17. Ugh that's discouraging in a lot of respects but also good to be aware of when/if we get rejected, all. Thank you for making us aware of this!
  18. Exactly! Things are so variable from year-to-year (who's on the adcomm, how many apps they get, how quickly they get through the apps) that you can take past data as a rough estimate, but never as certainty!
  19. WOW, thank you for this news! It's just -- *short-circuits* Ahhh! I'll keep you posted on what I hear!
  20. Ah I see! Still, wow, big building! I'm so glad you got out of there quickly!!! What an experience that must have been ..
  21. I guess the amount of funding opportunities depends on what field you're in ... in Sociology, most PhD programs offer full funding with tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance benefits in exchange for being an RA, TA, GA, etc. Some terminal MA programs also offer generous funding. I'm in one such program and don't have to pay anything to be here, which is great considering I did my entire undergraduate education on student loans, so my debt is pretty great there. I wouldn't be able to incur any more student debt at the graduate level!
  22. Hoping to hear from at least Rutgers and Boulder this week. Rutgers on whether I'm accepted after my interview, and Boulder for any word at all (their deadline was 12/1, so I'm a bit worried ... I hope they liked my application!). And hearing from Brandeis and Vanderbilt would be awesome, too! Perhaps later in the week? I don't know! My predictions and spreadsheet have all been so totally WRONG so far! I can't help but laugh because trying to have control over this situation just isn't possible. The only thing I can do is patiently wait.
  23. WOAH, that sounds awful!!! O____O I hope you're living in a dry place now! My situation sounds easy compared to yours! Wow, 36-story building in undergrad ... I'm guessing you went to a big school in a big city! That thought of 36-story buildings blows my mind! *is from a small town and went to small universities where 8-story dorms were a big deal*
