  1. Oh, that friend sounds like my friend, especially in terms of "they're as good of an applicant as me, if not better!" My friend and I applied together straight from undergrad to various MA and PhD programs two years ago. She applied to a bunch; I only applied to 3. She was so calm throughout the process. She wasn't even sure if she would get in because she ended up getting waitlisted at one of the many programs she applied to. But she was very calm about it all. She ended up getting accepted off the waitlist and is very happy where she is, in a very nice PhD program! I told her I'm applying for PhD programs this year, and I told her how neurotic and anxious I am about the process, and she just chuckled and said "Oh yes, I remember how neurotic you were two years ago..." hey, we just have different ways of taking in this process. I bet your friend is gonna be just fine *shares celebratory wine with you*
  2. Congratulations, and amen to this! *raises coffee mug to you* I felt like I was floating on air after I found out. I might post my story here, but I've posted it in another thread, and I don't want to sound repetitive!
  3. My current master's program offers pretty darn good funding opportunities. Feel free to PM me.
  4. Congratulations on your interview!! I've noticed that, for some of the programs I applied to, they do interviews some years and no interviews other years. It *might* have to do with funding. They might be really interested in 7 people but have only 5 funded spots, so they call and talk with the applicants to get a better idea of just how to make the difficult final cut. Or at least that's my hypothesis! Either way, good luck, and I hope you get some good news soon!
  5. Definitely look into whether the department will pay for or reimburse travel expenses before you decide not to go! Hopefully they'll do anything they can to get you to visit campus!
  6. Congrats! I'll hopefully be seeing you at the UC Davis visitation day
  7. @oedipus yeah, some programs' websites have stipend amounts openly listed. Not all programs' websites list the stipend amount though. Some are very forthcoming, some only say "stipend support."
  8. Welcome!! *offers you a plate of cookies and some tea or coffee (whichever you prefer)* Omg!! I think we all have the tendency to think of adcomms as really harsh, even if it's just for comedic effect. I wouldn't get too insecure upon hearing the news of another interview. I got a rejection on Monday, and it really sullied the rest of my week. On Tuesday, I saw acceptances for another program of mine (UC Davis) roll out. A week before that, I saw an interview for another program I applied to (Rutgers). I lived that week in an insecure, depressed funk. I thought it was over. But then I got accepted to Davis on Thursday, and received an interview for Rutgers shortly before that! It's impossible to pin down how programs send out notifications, as it changes from year to year (waves vs. all at once, rejections before vs. rejections after acceptances, etc). Waiting is killer, and maybe some Oxford person will have info for you, but until then, feel free to make yourself at home and wait with us! Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about your romantic rejection =( That's so hard ... We also offer wine in this thread for such (all) occasions
  9. Oh my goodness, I am so incredibly sorry to hear about this! If you lived around me, I would treat you to a HUGE meal and dessert, of course. I'd even pick it up from the restaurant and bring it to you in bed so you wouldn't have to go out. *big hugs* What an awful day ... we're all here for you, friend <3 Also: sending you good PA vibes for a PSU acceptance <3
  10. Yeah I got my Rutgers phone interview notification Thursday, and I had my interview Friday! I was glad for that because I didn't have as much time to overthink it/get too nervous.
  11. Wow congrats to all the PSU interviews!! Awesome Saturday evening!
  12. I actually received my first acceptance via phone in front of a student who hung around after class to chat with me. Luckily I already knew the student from outside of class, so I felt more free to freak out lol!!
  13. PhD! I'm currently in a Master's program :-) and thank you so much!
  14. Welcome and CONGRATULATIONS!! *throws confetti for you* And congratulations to all the other Maryland admits! Saturday acceptances ftw!
  15. Thank you so much, @ForeveronwardI am so relieved, grateful, and happy! I was really down and insecure after bbeing rejected at the beginning of the week, but now I feel so much better!
  16. They're so worth it! And they're so little that you can easily control the portions!
  17. Kiffles are a treat I recently discovered! They're sooooo tasty ... I'm especially fond of the apricot and raspberry flavors <3 I had a phone interview yesterday, and the professor with whom I was talking was very calm, zen, and seemed very wise, overall. Meanwhile, I'm pretty much ... Spongebob. But he said my excitement was a good thing, so that's good!
  18. I'd be like "Why are you apologizing?! Best. Saturday. EVER!!" hahaha. I would have felt the same way if I heard a tired tone in his voice! I'm glad it was great news! *serves you some delicious kiffles to celebrate*
  19. Congratulations, @haltheincandescent! Did the acceptance call fall on the weekend? If so, that's awesome!!! I just got a text saying "CONGRATULATIONS, [GINGIN6789] ..." and for a flickering moment, I thought "acceptance via text message?!" No, it was Turbo Tax saying the federal gov't accepted my tax return. Welll, at least money is on its way!
  20. Some good ones from the past few days: University of Texas (Austin) rejections: UC Santa Barbara rejections:
  21. An update: On Thursday, I received my first acceptance from a program with a January 4th deadline. Two minutes later, I got an interview from a program with a December 1st deadline. 15 minutes later, I received an acceptance from a program with a December 15th deadline. Needless to say, I was in a glass case of emotion for the rest of the day. (Also received a rejection from a program with a December 19th deadline on Monday, btw, but I don't like to think about that one. Shun the nonbeliever! SHUN.) So, really, don't expect to hear from a program last purely because its deadline is later. I have yet to hear from programs with 12/1, 12/15, 1/1, and 1/15 deadlines.
  22. I don't think there are many Sociology folks in this thread, but it would be super cool if I ended up meeting you all. You KNOW I would bake you all some cookies or brownies FOR REAL. Two years ago, I ended up meeting someone from Grad Cafe at a two conferences, then at a recruitment visit. Twas awesome. However, we lost touch because this person doesn't have social media or anything, and they're not on Grad Cafe anymore D':
  23. Yes, and if you're on mobile, you have to actually click the little diamond/crystal dot. Congrats to @redhillgirl! And if I didn't congratulate you on your recent acceptances, goofy, then congratulations to you as well! There has been so much good news, it's hard to keep track. *hugs @HopefulSocPhD* Still have five more to go ... still, I understand you must feel pretty devastated now. I have a huge inkling that you're gonna land exactly where you belong though. These rejections will just make future victories sweeter!!! *bakes you the biggest cake you've EVER seen* And, in case you're doubting yourself (I was after my first rejection), you are a STELLAR candidate!
