  1. I agree about wanting to hear some news... I saw the one Emory interview and the one Rutgers interview posted, and I've been pacing ever since. I just need to be patient. We're one day closer to knowing either way...
  2. That sounds like me five years ago! It was awful. I hope you get your appetite back soon and the nausea goes away. If you need anyone to vent to, I'm here!
  3. Woke up to a bunch of Minnesota acceptances on the board! Congratulations to you all! Love waking up to good news.
  4. Do you think the nausea is from anxiety? There was a period of time where my stomach constantly felt like it was "sinking" because of my anxiety, and I simply had no appetite/was nauseated pretty much all the time. I ended up learning that I could eat while nauseated without throwing up. So that helped me a lot, knowing that I could just make myself eat when I wasn't hungry/was nauseated. I hope your nausea goes away!!
  5. Omg I made a spreadsheet and put the time windows and dates into my calendar too XD it's like I've found my own kind here at grad cafe!
  6. A couple UNC Chapel Hill acceptances today! Congratulations to the admits! Also saw a UCSF interview... Congrats to that admit as well!
  7. Leftover wedding cake, and also a great variety of dips (mustards, cheese, icing) that my in-laws got for the post-wedding get together. But not cake and dips together.
  8. Welcome! I have no idea how you did it ... applying to 20 programs and not working at all would be tough enough! Plus, holding it in and not venting about it to anyone except your girlfriend? You are awesomely strong!! Oh wow, I don't know what that means in Spanish, but I saw the word tacos. And now I am hungry. I think this thread was talking about things we've got planned to celebrate acceptances. My idea of celebration is always food. Always trying to find an excuse to get some delicious food. It's actually one of the only ways in which I spend unwisely ... I'm usually quite frugal, but once I see food, it's all over ...
  9. Yeah, I kindly asked the mod to lock the thread because the conversation was going downhill. I was part of the reason it was going downhill, for which I sincerely apologize. I got way too overbearing with tone policing, and I wasn't helping anything! I know how you feel ... I've seen interviews go up for Emory and Rutgers, so naturally the dreams of receiving acceptances/rejections have started back up again. We'll see if any news arrives today!
  10. I wish I had more up votes left to give cause that gif posted earlier of "Ben Wyatt, human disaster" rules my world! Speaking of interviews, someone just posted that they got an interview for another program I applied to... Completely totally unrelated note, clearly: Pink Moscato, anyone? I'm not nervous at all!
  11. Thank you, Max! Waiting really is hard. I feel as if my SOP is stronger this time around than it was when I applied to Master's programs two years ago. So, we'll see what comes from this! Are you pretty set to attend UCLA then, or are you still waiting to hear back from other programs?
  12. Wow, that's the dream! I can't wait/ I hope to hear the familiar "pip-pop" of my email alert and see an email from one of the graduate programs I applied to...
  13. Emory interview on the board!! Congrats! Would the interview recipient care to share more info? Was it a personalized email or a mass one? I'm so excited to see Emory results!
  14. Yes indeed! My broad research interests include medical sociology/health, gender, religion, and the environment. How about you?
  15. I said your posts *came across as* and *sounded* mean-spirited, not that you are a mean-spirited person. And as I said in my first post where I pointed out that *some* of your posts *came across* as mean-spirited, I noted that one cannot always tell tone over the Internet, so you probably didn't mean to sound that way. If you're wondering what I'm referring to, I am referring to posts such as the one where you called some posters trigger-happy and eager to one-up other posters because there was a miscommunication about the interview process. Maybe saying that post "sounded mean-spirited" wasn't the best choice of words. So, that's really all I have to say about it. I might not post about this anymore. And @qeta, I think you may be thinking of iemons, not kameldinho (at least in regards to the Alexander post)
  16. Good idea to hold of on one! Right now, my husband has three little fabric storage ottomans lined up in a row, and that's our "coffee table." The fabric storage ottomans are collapsible, too, and lightweight! Could be a good budget-friendly option for you. OH NO!! That sucks that they were so disappointed! But I bet the jewelry box has come in handy for you at least!
  17. I might not be reading your post correctly, but it sounds like you're using the fact that "people at conferences and academic journals are harsh and nitpicky" to justify your apparent harsh tone in this and other threads. If so, I have to respectfully disagree here with that justification. Of course I know that people are gonna nitpick everything I do, especially those at conferences and those at academic journals. I've presented at conferences and have submitted quantitative work to journals, and while I've run into nitpicky-ness, I haven't experienced mean-spirited harshness and rudeness. I am aware that every conference and journal is different though, and that mean people exist. But this is Grad Cafe. The soc forum is a place where I seek friendly, good conversation with people. When I posted here two years ago, looking for community and people to talk to because I needed support from folks going through what I was going through, I found some great friends. I just kinda wanted the forum to be a place where everyone felt welcome again. That's why I informed you that you sounded mean-spirited in some of your posts from the previous threads, and then reached out and apologized in my last post, because I realize I could've come across as mean-spirited to you, too. Hopefully what I said makes sense. But I could just be misunderstanding your post again.
  18. @raaawr not crazy at all! He is a really cool dude. My husband is somewhat like him! Your dogs sounds awesome! My sister and her boyfriend are just like April and Andy! My sister acts like April and her boyfriend looks like Andy! Pretty crazy, right? @sjoh197 if it makes you feel any better, I don't even know how to drive (I'm 26...had a lot going on when I was 16, never got around to driving), and I have tons of debt from undergrad student loans! Ugh! I do hope you can get your coffee table though. Have you tried Craigslist for a cheap yet useful one? Or elsewhere online? @haltheincandescent that must've been so cool to see a show based in Indiana! That's kinda how I felt being from PA and seeing The Office and Always Sunny. I loved pointing out how PA state law forbids the sale of alcohol in gas station convenience stores, despite an ep of Always Sunny depicting them buying a beer at a gas station. I hope Amy Poehler comes to IU's campus! That would be so cool! I actually thought about applying to Indiana!
  19. Thank you! It was fun! And it is very doable. We only set up the whole thing a week beforehand. Got the license, a pastor we both know was able to officiate on short notice, secured the venue at the college where my husband works... And luckily nearly everyone could make it! I highly recommend the small wedding, if it's something you're interested in! It was a lot for fun.
  20. Ben Wyatt really is amazing haha! His love of calzones fascinates me. Wow you have summer all year round? That's pretty cool! Except not literally cool.
  21. Yes, in years past, it appears that Rutgers spread their interview notices out over the course of about a week. Then all their rejections came out shortly thereafter. We'll see what this year brings! Also might hear from UC Davis and Emory this week, judging from results from past years ... only time will tell!!
  22. It was SO good! We had a small ceremony where we invited our immediate families, the folks we consider our bridal party, and they were allowed to bring their significant other if they wanted. All in all, only about 18 people. It was so exciting, and virtually nothing went wrong! When my husband and I kissed for the first time as husband and wife, some of my lipstick got on his lips though, so we started laughing at the "altar." Except no one else could see it but us, so everyone thought we were just randomly laughing. That's so us though. Then we all went back to his (our?) apartment for hors d'oeuvres. Even though there was only 18 people or so, I still was overwhelmed by the attention paid to us during the day, and I was unable to process people's sentences by the end of the day! My father-in-law said something to me and it took me a solid 10 seconds to understand what he had just said. After everyone left, my husband and I celebrated with dinner at a nice Belgian restaurant where I enjoyed some tasty salmon and a delicious quad Belgian ale! Then we finished watching the new season of Parks and Rec on Netflix and went to bed. So, it was basically the perfect day!! Now, he's back at work and I'm back to work building data sets. New semester starts next week for me!
  23. On the results page, someone posted that they got a Sociology interview to Rutgers. First signs of movement for me this application cycle ... it has begun ... Palms are sweaty Knees weak Arms spaghetti...
