  1. I experienced what socilinda described in her description of interview weekends during a "recruitment visit" two years ago. I guess they are very similar! Great to know, as a few of the programs I'm applying to do interviews
  2. @merteuil Only thing I can suggest is distract yourself!!! Semester starts soon!! If you're in undergrad/master's program now, then hopefully the new semester will distract you. I've had a pretty cool "distraction" lately. (it's so much more than that though) For a number of reasons, my fiance and I decided to get married a bit earlier than we intended. We were going to get married in June, but um ... we decided to get legally married in a week. So, I'm getting married next Saturday! Woo! We're still going to have the bigger, more symbolic and romantic ceremony in June, but we want/pretty much need to get legally married earlier than that. Got my wedding band in the mail today, got a little white dress (already have ****THE**** dress for our June ceremony though), some new flats, and we just verified everything with the pastor and little venue yesterday. So, there's a good bit of news among all of my nervous waiting posts! Still ... until then ... ball of nervous energy over here *rolls around the thread* EDIT: SHOOT, sorry my reply is off-topic! I seriously thought this was the Wine, Wait, and Whine thread!! @___@
  3. @ mrbmrbm etc congratulations!! Very happy for you! There's been no visible movement in sociology results besides an interview at UVA! Hopefully more Rice folks come forward!
  4. Nervous is good, panic is bad. That's what my dear undergrad thesis advisor always told me. So try not to panic. (easier said than done) I'm currently at a terminal MA program in sociology. They do have a high acceptance rate, and it's a very small program. However, while I'm here, I've earned a 4.0 GPA at the master's level. Perhaps more importantly, I'm completing a rigorous master's thesis and have four publications in the works. This will look great on your PhD apps if you go this route! If you end up going to that master's program, just put a lot of effort into finding a professor to work with who will help you get started on research and who can help you get some publications and conference presentations out there! Also, your letters for PhD programs should be stronger if you go this route since your profs have known you through undergrad and master's-level work!
  5. Brains, that's AMAZING!! congratulations!! So happy for you! Best of luck and keep us posted! And your kind and supportive words are most appreciated! :-)
  6. Is there a rivalry between those two schools? *knows nothing about college sports* I'm glad I know now! Thanks! It's cool to know you're applying to Vandy though! We can be Vandy buddies!
  7. Whining about dreams again, but just a scary dream, not a PhD-related one. In my dream, I get a phone call from my next door neighbor. My house was built in 1902, and my bedroom is a spacious attic which we joke may be haunted. In my dream, my neighbor calls and says "Samara isn't going to take it anymore. She's not gonna stand for you being there." I hang up the phone, and my fiancé asks what that means. I tell him it means I can't go home again... unless I try to stop Samara the ghost. My fiancé and I end up IN a video game about koalas. Koalas are one of my favorite animals, so it's cute. But it gets scary quickly. A koala bites my fiancé, and I wrench the koala off his hand and take it away, allowing it to latch to my hand, since I know it's a video game and won't really hurt. We hide out in a clear plastic tent, and an old man passes by, stares harshly at me, and runs his finger across his throat quickly as if to say my death is near. Angry, I look back at him and do the same motion before pointing as him, as if to say "no u". The koala in my hand has turned into plastic, which I crush in my hand since I'm so angry. I quickly realize that, since I accidentally killed the demon koala, I'll soon pay for it... Worse, I made an enemy of the man who threatened me.. The most terrifying music begins playing, and I wake up. Even after I wake up, the tune remains in my head... Thankfully I can't remember the tune now. So freaking scary, and might have ruined one of my favorite animals for a while.
  8. Dbcollies WOW that's amazing! I will certainly be registering for that program! Thank you for developing such a wonderful creation! Takeru, that's true!! When I was applying for MA programs 2 years ago, there was a February 1st deadline, and I heard back from them on February 17th!
  9. I understand why you're upset, Brains. I certainly would be, too, if I knew all of that information. Sometimes knowing too much is a curse. No matter what results you get, we're here for you!
  10. Brains, your field sounds specific; does only one applicant get an interview for your specialty area? If more than one person gets an interview, don't feel like it's over until you actually receive a rejection/official word that *all* interviews have gone out! Have a nice cup of tea now or a delicious coffee now, and a nice glass of wine later.
  11. My application deadlines ranged from December 1st to January 15th, so I'm kinda just trying to do the rational thing and wait patiently. So, of course, what I'm actually doing is refreshing the Results page and my email about a million times a day. Hang in there!
  12. I was looking for this thread to post this! It's from a few years ago (I was researching when I might hear back from my programs), but I love it: Sad day. It was my George Clooney of schools.
  13. Glad you know about them now, so you are prepared if you end up going to PSU! I do netflix binge on shows that don't require too much thought haha. I've been watching Bob's Burgers during the day while my fiance is at work. And I've been working on data coding for my thesis, of course. Elvidi, does Colorado have similarly strict alcohol laws like PA does?
  14. Shay, I am indeed presenting! Oh wow, a ski trip sounds fun! I've never been skiing before! As for MyLife's post, two years ago, I applied to only three programs straight out of undergrad, and one of the programs was a terminal M.A. (I ended up attending the terminal M.A. program in the end!). I ended up being accepted with full funding to two of the three programs. So, it's entirely possible that MyLife will be accepted to both, depending on MyLife's application! However, MyLife, do consider Pennywise's advice. My two cents: if Vanderbilt is a good fit for your research interests, definitely consider applying, as their deadline is January 15th AND there is NO application fee!!
  15. Yeah, I can't remember if I filled out *all* such applications before I knew my final list (I think only three or four programs asked about this), but I'd say for nearly all of them I did. If they ask about the other programs, I'll be happy to tell them about the programs, as I definitely have my final list now haha
  16. Interesting. I feel bad for leaving the "other schools I'm applying to" field blank. I mainly did that because I was filling out the apps that included that before I really knew my final list anyway.
  17. Thank you, shay! I will certainly keep that in mind! Are you going to ESS in March? It's in Boston this year :-) I actually feel differently about other people here applying to the same programs as me ... I feel like if I miss something, someone else applying to the same program might catch it, and we can inform each other! :-) plus, I generally just like knowing we're going through the same thing!
  18. Dishsoap that's awful!! I'm so sorry to hear you had such a draining experience :-( I spent tonight watching Harry Potter with my fiancé and having a beer (a Porter, specifically). Thought that would be appropriate to mention in this thread. :-)
  19. Coffee sounds like a great idea! Oh good, I'm glad your profs still have time to turn in their LORs!!
  20. Brandeis buddy!! Let's wait together!! *camps out in thread and makes us some tea* That sucks about the LORs!! When is the deadline for umbc?
  21. Shamon, me too!! I'm soooo curious, especially since there was only one posting!! You've got a good list! Please do keep us posted! We'll be waiting together! That really sucks about your SOP... hopefully the adcomm realizes you're human and that mistakes like that happen! I'm sure they've seen it before!
  22. Oh man ... the dreams have started. This happened two years ago when applying for Master's programs. I'm a lucid dreamer, so most of the time I'm good at distinguishing if I'm dreaming ... Last night though, I had a dream where I got accepted to both of my December 1 deadline programs. One of them I was so unsure about because the fit wasn't *as* good as some of the other programs I applied to. In the dream though, I got a really sweet fellowship. I even said to my fiance in the dream "See, this isn't even a dream either!" Hahahhahaha *cries*
  23. @redhillgirl, edit bc I misunderstood your post! I feel the same way!! I'm nervous I screwed up one little thing that'll ruin my chances, even though I rationally know I've done my very best! Keep in mind, too, that research/publication experience and/or teaching experience is important, too! Rank isn't absolutely everything. I'm not saying that to invalidate your feelings! I'm saying it to reassure you. :-) @shay aw yay! I'm so happy my little timeline was useful! Sorry to hear you might have a wait ahead of you though... Having another week or two to wait for me doesn't stop me from checking my email, results page, and forums though haha
  24. Yeah apparently not all of the wine/liquor stores are closed on Sunday, but the vast majority of them are. I was watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia once, and they were in a gas station store, and it seemed to be "PA accurate," shelves lined with Tastykakes (a PA staple) and everything, but then they grabbed a cold beer and I said to myself "they almost had it!! You can't get a beer at a gas station though!" Ciders are also great! They're always so light and crisp. My favorite beers are Belgian ales (dubbel, tripel, quad)!
  25. Thank you so much! You definitely described it well...
