sirmixalot reacted to Psyched21 in Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD
Applying to these graduate programs has been an eye-opening experience. It seems that the training of future psychologists is governed by the narrow needs and interests of a few faculty members, rather than the pressing mental health needs of the communities. So many dedicated people, eager to devote their lives to clinical psychology, are not able to gain access to the profession because entrance is so tightly regulated. If medical school admissions were run this way, there would be almost no physicians. I think the APA should reconsider the academic model for training and licensing of clinical psychologists, for this system fails to serve interests of future practitioners and patients alike.

THIS! I come from an educationally and economically disadvantaged background. My father basically has an 8th grade education, and I have more extended family who have been incarcerated than have graduated from college. Just getting my Bachelor's felt like an insurmountable goal. Also, having transferred to my university from community college severely limited research opportunities because I only had two years to finish my degree. Not saying that people who have taken out loans for education do so on a whim, but I have it drilled in my head that "people like me" can't afford entry into academia.

I think academia needs more people like all of us. I sincerely hope each and every one of us reach our goals. I think those of us that stick with academia are going to have to help pick up the pieces.

Thank you for letting me (and others here applied) know! I'm just glad I can hold on to that little bit of hope ?.
Yes to all of this! Although this was my first time applying, I don't know if I can financially and emotionally handle going through this process multiple times. Plus I'm an older applicant compared to most, which is also a barrier I feel. It's a shame it is so incredibly competitive and that there just isn't enough programs considering how high the need is for psychologists.

Right? I thought I was the only one who thought that (I received this email as well). This is my first time going through the process and as I see people on their second, third, and fourth tries become more discouraged I can't help but feel saddened and slightly angry. This entire process needs to be completely scrapped and reevaluated. People with years and years of experience are rejected because there are only 3-10 spots per school? We can either be in $200k+ debt for the rest of our lives or apply once every year until hopefully we get a shot?
The world needs more psychologists, and everyone here has the knowledge, passion, and drive to be one. This process effectively discourages applicants from diverse backgrounds, promotes hyper-competitiveness, and drives away perfectly qualified (and over-qualified) candidates. I hope someone who has any influence has been watching these forums this cycle. I'm out of things to say, and these programs are out of excuses.

sirmixalot reacted to mhm2168 in Teachers College, Columbia University Ph.D. Clinical Psychology Fall 2021
I posted on the results page that I actually reached out to Admissions via email last Friday asking if invitations had gone out and they just replied this recent Tuesday with, "Thank you for your email! Per the Clinical Psychology PhD FAQ page, students will be notified about interviews in February. "
So, it's possible that someone may have heard earlier that they've been invited to interview (as this has happened towards the end of January) but I am confident that nobody would be offered a spot or an acceptance letter without an interview. Safe to assume somebody's just trying to mess with everyone.
Hang in there everyone. Deep breaths.

Non traditional here, and I totally identify with you. I was told when talking to one POI in particular that my background in international politics could be pitched in a beneficial way, but I won't get my hopes up until I get an actual offer. I think while my job makes me non traditional, the fact that I'm not fresh out of college is also something that gives me anxiety. So much imposter syndrome over here, but I'm pushing through!

PHEW! Indonesian research permit approved! Now on to the Visa process and to start the process of getting my assistants' permits done. Every step taken brings one new one to complete. How is everyone else doing with their research/country permits/visas?
