  1. AGREED. It’s so frustrating!
  2. Yale had a student panel for prospective students last Wednesday for all departments, which made it seem like all interview invites had gone out.
  3. I applied to Columbia epi 2 years ago, and just checked that my interview request came on 2/11! I remember it seeming like a really late process at the time. So don’t give up hope!
  4. Not sure about chronic, but Yale’s ID epi interviews are this week so if you haven’t heard back I don’t think it’s good news (though don’t know for certain!). They are having a difficult funding year, though, so I definitely wouldn’t take it personally!
  5. Yep seriously considering it, depending on if/where I am accepted. My plan would be 1-2 years distance and then ideally do the dissertation phase remotely or semi-remotely.
  6. I think it’s a bit of a risk, for the reasons mentioned by others- are you sure you’ll be able to get useful research experience and mentorship without funding? Will you only be expected to pay tuition/fees but get some payment for a research assistantship/TA opportunities? If not, how will you be able to get those opportunities? that said, JHU literally started funding people like 3ish years ago? So they may have more experience with it that programs that have been fully-funded for longer, and you might be able to scramble and find funding after a semester or so. If you’re serious about this, wouldn’t hurt to ask.
  7. Epi of microbial diseases!
  8. Was just wondering this! Got an email with an invite from program head last Friday, and additional scheduling emails today. Anyone else? (EMD)
  9. I know for UW if you’re accepted you cannot defer, but if you reapply within 5(?) years you only need to rewrite the essay and I believe get one more letter of Rec? And you’re almost guaranteed admission. But funding is a different story. UMN allows deferral, but your funding package needs to be renegotiated.
  10. I live with my partner right now and he’s in a training program himself so can’t move. If I got in somewhere away from home, my plan was always to move for 1-2 years and then hope to switch to remote for dissertation-writing. So for me, remote has some perks though I agree with you, I’ll be bummed to miss out on some of the relationship-building.
  11. I actually have been thinking about this today! What do people think the status will be like come fall? Will everything be remote? And if so, how do people feel about moving to the city of their program, vs staying put if all is remote?
  12. I’ve only heard of behavioral science so far! I’ll cross my fingers for both of us, then
  13. Hello equally stressed out friends Anyone who applied to Brown PhD Epi hear back about recruitment day? Just wondering if I can cross that one off the list haha (I know a few people in other departments who have heard back)
  14. Waiting impatiently on this one...
  15. I went through a round of apps a few years ago and MN was one of them! I think along with finding a professor to work with you, they’re also looking for funding and generally don’t want to get back to you without a funding package. My suggestion is to stay in touch with them if it’s a program you’re really interested in! I didn’t hear back until kinda late... late March maybe? But in between knew they were working hard on finding stuff and so I had a decent idea of my chances. I know other people who had good luck by letting the program know how serious they were about it.
  16. Same to you!!!! Just trying to remember it’ll turn out as it’s meant to
  17. I’m in the same position as you- living in Boston, applied to local programs only, super nervous because they’re already all competitive and seem to be more competitive this year. That said I’m not going to expand my search. My partner is “stuck” in Boston. So I guess I’m just over here anxiously stressing ? and considering other options for next year haha. definitely no safety programs on my list, unfortunately.
  18. Hiii! Also re-applying, so glad I'm not alone also will be doing mostly ID or equivalent, but with some self-imposed geographic restrictions. Best of luck!
  19. I'm applying a second time around. The first time around- I probably emailed like 20 people lol got responses from maybeeee half of them? Talked to probably about 6-7. Anecdotally, I was admitted to schools where I didn't speak to any POIs, and rejected from schools where I had great convos with several. I think in public health its not as important as other programs. Largely it was important to me to talk to a PI if there was a program with only ONE person I'd want to work with. Otherwise, mostly it was a helpful informational meeting for the most part. So far I've emailed one person this time around, no response yet
  20. Most programs have some global and infectious disease faculty and tracks. I think you'd need to narrow down your interests more. What diseases? What methodology? What country/region?
  21. I found last time around that it really depended... I contacted faculty at every school. Some people didn't respond. Some responded and said they didn't speak to students prior to acceptance. Some were happy to talk. I think it's 100% worth it to contact faculty because the conversations I did have were SO helpful. From my experience, faculty don't have a ton of influence directly over acceptance decisions prior to interviews, and they couldn't answer many of the application process specific questions, but they had great insight on the programs and research being done there and could point to additional faculty. Speaking to faculty almost exclusively made me more excited about the program (the glaring exception being JHU). Just don't take it personally if they don't respond- they're very busy and it's not any kind of reflection on you.
  22. Also FYI I'm applying for a second time (applied for fall 2019 to like 11 schools, got some acceptances but none were a great fit and due to geographic considerations chose to turn them down). So can field some process of applying questions if people have them!
  23. Writing was 5.0/92%. Honestly I thought the writing section was really dumb... it's like regressing back to a 5 paragraph essay lol but I guess I don't know a better way to test writing skills on a standardized test. Thanks everyone! Will go ahead and submit
  24. Hi all! Will be applying to PhD's this fall- I'm in Boston and hoping to stay local, so thinking Harvard (PhD Health Policy/Decision Science), BU (Epi), and maybe Brown/Yale? Stats: undergrad GPA 3.6, grad school 3.9. MSPH Epi. I have ~10 pubs (middle author), 2 first author (working on 2 more now). Worked for a gov org for 3 years, now working at an academic center doing infectious disease simulation modeling (which is my main interest). GRE: 169V, 164Q. So I have a GRE q- most of the programs I'm looking at aren't requiring it this year but you can submit if you'd like. I'm on the fence?? My Q score isn't awesome, and GRE submission costs money... I'm wondering whether submitting or skipping would be advantageous... Any thoughts/anyone else thinking about this?
  25. Yes! A few hours after sending the inquiry I got an email to check the portal and was waitlisted :/ Honestly- I'm fine with it. My partner matched into residency in Boston, which is where I did undergrad and have wanted to get back to. Currently in the process of applying to jobs that will give me some more experience in my research interest areas and will plan to reapply (likely in the northeast area- Harvard, Brown, Yale) in a year or two. I'm currently on Yale's waitlist which I think is the only place I'd accept at this point, if somehow ended up getting off the waitlist. Good luck with JHU!!!
