  1. I'll be going to both UNT- Denton and UNTHSC for a dual degree. Hoping to find something in between the two schools. I've been looking at housing in the HEB/Keller area but don't know how travel time will be when you factor in traffic.
  2. Hate to bump an old thread, but could anyone suggest affordable apartments ($600<) in the cities between Dallas/Ft. Worth? I'm from the North Texas area, but not all too familiar with the DFW metroplex...
  3. Have you considered Americorps? Most programs are 12 months, and the one I am currently finishing up is 10! I'm in my second year and also volunteering/working a part-time job on the side. It's been hard at times (I miss sleeping in!) but It has allowed me to save up some money and also gain some experience working with marginalized/vulnerable populations. And you can't beat the education award upon successful completion of the program! Look into it if you're interested (and research research research!)
  4. My plan is to find digital copies online/in the library or rent. If possible, I'd like to connect with some 2nd years and see if they'd let me borrow their old books.
  5. Thank goodness for this post! I was considering using my backpack from undergrad and my huge (and heavy!) purse, but I'm going to definitely start looking into/saving up for a Hershel or Lo and Sons bag. They look really durable and cute!
  6. Feeling more at ease about my school choice. Reading over the program description is helping quell the "what-ifs" I've been having about a recent admission! Whew. Now to buckle down on this apartment search!

  7. I'm in a sticky situation myself. Applied to a dual degree program that is housed at two separate universities for each portion (under the same umbrella, but still considered two different schools) that are in two different cities in a heavy congested/high traffic metroplex (and are a 45 min drive away from each other). I've been looking at apartments between the two and it has been HARD. Either things are completely booked for the fall or out of my price range by $200-$300. I'm just hoping that I'll be able to set my schedule up in a way that I'm taking classes at one school one year (and live as close as possible) and at another the next.
  8. freaking out. Submitted deposit and got an admission offer to a higher ranked program. I don't know what to do :(

Would you rather go to the higher-ranked program?

after waffling for all morning/afternoon, I'm just going to stick with my original choice. Better in tune with my research interests and closer to family. But I keep going through this every time a get an admission decision. So many what ifs start popping up!

That's a relief! I get plenty of what-ifs too... even after submitting my decision.

  9. declined one acceptance and mailing in my deposit for my preferred choice tomorrow even though I'm still waiting on two decisions. Oh well!

  10. I always feel like I'm bothering department heads, admissions, and financial aid offices, etc. when I send multiple emails a week. Then I remember that I spent over $500 just applying and that guilt slowly dissipates.

  11. Congratualtions!
  12. I need to mail off my deposit this week for it to get there by next Tuesday, but I'm still waiting to hear from two schools! This is absolutely ridiculous.

are you sure the deposit needs to be there by the 15th? i wonder if you send them the official acceptance on the 15th if you can have the deposit arrive later. you might want to ask about that.

I have :/. The decision and deposit have to arrive at the same time unfortunately (I have to mailed together).

Wait a little longer and pay the extra for Overnight shipping perhaps?

  13. Just got a "congratulations" email from one of my recommenders regarding an acceptance. Thing is I haven't told her yet and it looked like she had copied it from an email. Wasn't aware that grad schools released that sort of info...

She isn't :/. She works in academia (dean at another university) but it's in an entirely different state...

you never know how people are connected... it's my guess that they know each other. Or could someone you told have mentioned it?

    4. bumblyboo

      bumblyboo

That is a possibility, but from the looks of it she was sent an email with my admission decision. I'm going to ask another recommender who I know on a more personal level if she received the same info as well...

  14. I'm currently in the same situation with UT-Houston. I have an admission deposit due on the 15th for one school (probably going to end up going there), but I would like to see what all of my options are before I commit completely. Either way I'll be mailing off the deposit next week. Hopefully I'm not making a mistake...
  15. My cat is coming with me. Though I'm moving no more than 4 hours across my current state, I couldn't imagine leaving her behind. I'm currently looking at pet-friendly apartments (especially ones without bread restrictions cus I really really want a shar pei/pit bull mix) and saving up for the pet deposit that will likely be in place.
  16. I'm doing a different program than VISTA (hesitant to put the program name out just in case someone from the corporate office stumbles upon this post) but I'll definitely need to arrange something similar. I've used all of my personal days at this point (boyfriend is out of the state for grad school so I ran out of them pretty quickly), but working remotely may be an option. I was originally planning on finishing up my hours two weeks early and leaving but not exiting (I have really good relationships with the program manager and program director) but I'll have to bring that up the next time we meet. And I wish! My program start date was originally in October (program would have ended in July) but was moved up a month and that's what messed me up. Oh well. Just hoping for the best at this point... **Edited: Stupid typos!
  17. I am a second year Americorps member. My first year was horrendous and stressful (my supervisor was the devil and I worked with children who had special needs/were in state custody for neglect and abuse, so it was heartbreaking at times. Loved the kids, though). This year has been better, but boring. I've pretty much been treated like a second-rate intern, which is whatever cus it gave me time to work on my grad applications. It has definitely been frustrating as I had hoped for a fulfilling term, but at this point I am over it and ready to move on and out of my current city come August. I've told my program director, but haven't gotten around to telling my actual placement. I'm kinda worried that leaving early (classes start two weeks before my term of service ends) will effect my eligibility concerning the ed award. Any tips? **Edited for typos

I know that feeling. Dead end jobs are a lot more tolerable once you know you've got something better lined up in the future. Congrats!

Thanks! And they are. Things have been so much better since I *know* that this is just temporary.

  19. I've already gotten into my preferred choice (just waiting on a decision on second half of the duel degree), but I'm going to hold out on accepting until I hear back from everyone. Dumb choice?

      microarray

Holding off until you have all the info is wise. Just acknowledge your acceptance and tell them you're waiting on the other half of the dual degree to make a final decision.

Just now seeing this. Thanks you for the advice!

  20. Did it back in February. Not expecting to get much in terms of grants/scholarships (applied to a few at my top choice). I do not want to take out anymore student loans so I'll be relying mostly on service grants from my two terms of Americorps and hopefully a part-time job.
  21. I'm currently doing an americorps program and have a second job, so I will be cutting super close. Top choice is about 4 hours away driving, so I might move my stuff up to my new apartment in mid August and stay in my current apt until I finish my hours for the term. Hoping to be permanently moved in at least 2 days before the start of class.
  22. I would look into a academic common marketplace waiver to see if you would be able to get in-state tuition since you live in a southern state (based off your location). Cost of the MPH clocks in around $11600 for the two years with in state tuition. ETA: Oops that's for Texas residents. But there might be a similar program in your home state so it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
  23. My top choice is the University of North Texas Health Science Center. I'm also interested in getting a duel degree in applied anthropology from their main UNT campus so the program is an almost perfect fit. It is a lower ranked program, but the tuition and location are gigantic pluses and would allow me to be closer to family. I went out of state for undergrad and have student loan debt that I'm really not trying to make worse. Plus I took two years off after graduating to serve with Americorps, so my e-grants would cover a good portion (if not all) of the tuition. Applied late in the application cycle so I'm still waiting on an admission decision currently. We'll see how it goes!
