  1. Follow-up! How fare the people who participated in this thread?
  2. Oh, my actual reason to come to this thread: everyone who was supposed to help me run an event this semester disappointed me. The hackathon co-host and participants disappointed me by bailing. The person who was supposed to help me with part of organizing a club reunion hardly did anything they were asked to, and the only things they did do they did the bare minimum at the last second. I could go into detail, but it's tedious. Everything came crashing down today. Both events are this weekend (Saturday and Sunday). .___. ...Still love them, though. <3
  3. My complaint is about this spoiler! I'm not caught up! Oh well. (I'm not really mad, haha. And it was already foreshadowed when I left off last season.)
  4. Not that I remember, but we should hang out. I like you already. XD
  5. IMO finances are key. Have you asked about funding opportunities that you can apply to once you're at NYU? Maybe you only need to pay for one semester. I would apply to more places for F2015 (or even S2015) with funding as a goal. But that's my prerogative. ;P
  6. I was e-mailed Feb 13th, but there were people who were accepted later that I've seen on the results page. So who knows? Also, ldeleon is a "she", not a "he".
  7. Last day I'm ever going to skip classes for my undergrad ever. Honest! XD

  8. Considering that fellowships are used to "recruit" students, as mentioned above, now I'm wondering if I got one because I mentioned that I was applying to absurdly prestigious schools (MIT, Stanford, etc.)? Maybe they wouldn't have if they knew I only applied to reach schools, and didn't actually expect to get into MIT! ;P
  9. I got my letter pretty quickly after an e-mail from the department notifying me (the notification came from ldeleon@usc.edu), but I'm a domestic student, so it was probably sooner. The envelope is pretty unsuspecting, so check your junk mail!
  10. For NLP? Go to USC. PM me if you want to talk about it more; that's my field*, and I might have a bit more info based on the prof you're talking about. Let's just say there are some labs that don't have problems with funding. *Well, was... Now it's my backup depending how much i like speech processing!
  11. ^^^ This, this, this! My friends applying for school this year are all in different subfields than me, so I know I didn't exactly "steal their spot" in any lab... But I feel guilty getting into a PhD program when one of my friends didn't, and he has a lot of research experience and has known what he wanted for a lot longer than I have. I know I got in with a lot of dumb luck... But I still feel bad. >_< Also, don't bother saying "Don't feel bad!", because the feeling doesn't go away with reason. Heh.
  12. Just tell her not to call herself a "landlord"; ask her to write a generic letter about paying rent on-time. I took a call once for my friend who unofficially sublet from me. The caller was none the wiser, even though I was clearly not the owner of the entire apartment complex. EDIT: To make it clear, all the person asked was if my friend paid her rent on-time, which she did, and they checked my information to make sure I was indeed the person listed as "current rentor" on the paperwork.
  13. Does anyone here work with professors at ISI? If so, I'd like to PM you a few questions! My advisor-to-be works between the main campus and ISI, and I'd like to know more about what it's like being split between the two (though I'm sure I'll stay on the main campus for at least my first year).
  14. ....Now I'm nervous that I'm not nervous. I should be nervous! x__x
  15. You shouldn't trust me, then.

I'll dig a bit deeper. Thanks for your help! I think I will cancel my on-campus housing and find something better suited to me. I think I'll try to visit a week in July to hunt for apartments.
  17. Classic! <3 Upvoting you later, when mine respawn.
  18. To be blunt, I'm not aware of anyone with any kind of CS degree having trouble finding work. The only professional master's student I know (did UG in India, then the master's at my UG university) works at Amazon in Seattle now, and is very happy there. And that's not even as renowned a school as UIUC. It sounds like you're not looking for research positions. Is this right?
  19. 10 more days of class left... And I skipped Monday and Tuesday. >_<

And will probably skip next Tuesday, based on how this Thursday goes. Motivation is dead. :P

now all you have left to do is go streaking.

  20. This thread is for guilty pleasures.
  21. Haha, thanks. I'm studying computer science with linguistics and mathematics at UMass. It's all a lot of fun there. I hope you love your time at Smith!! Northampton is a unique little town.
  22. Applying to on-campus housing was pretty easy, there's a process you go through. Just fill out the form and good luck! I know I was given a kind of housing I didn't apply for (1BR2P), so be ready to not get what you ask for. See you in Viterbi!
  23. Agh, meant to upvote, so sorry! x_x Congratulations!!
  24. FWIW, I've had amazing experiences with roommates of different genders. The only bad experiences I had were with other women, but they seemed to have serious issues (and I don't just mean "I disagreed with them a lot so I'm calling them crazy"... They had stuff they were working out). Never had a problem with any of the dudes. This includes shared bedrooms, but not for very long for any of the "opposite gender same bedroom" situations (unrelated to how we got along; just no one wanted to have to share a bedroom if they didn't have to). But I think I'm easy to get along with as a roommate, and I imagine this depends more on you than just on your roommate.
