Hmm... I have people I might be able to stay with in LA. Maybe I can make a week out of it late July and go apartment hunting in-person? I don't want to take a huge risk, but I keep hearing that this method isn't really that risky in LA.
  3. Last second application for a scholarship to the Grace Hopper Celebration? Let's do this. :D

  4. All rejections except from my top choice, which accepted me two months ago. Wow. I get to stick with my decision and never have to ask "what if?" :D

For me it was exactly the same! All rejections or wait lists except from my stop choice, so I never had any choice to make ;)

      Same thing happened to me!

  5. I can't speak for UCLA, but USC has a lot of students per 500-level CS course. At the USC visit day, they told us to expect ~80 person classes since we'll be lumped in with master's students for our breadth courses.
  6. If the course would've counted on your transcript as an undergrad, it probably would have similar weight if you took it outside of school, though I have no personal experience with this. If nothing else, you can put some code up on your github or something to show what you can do. Applications ask for resumes. People in CS put their github accounts on their resumes, if they have one. In particular, it's helpful to have a "completed" program under your belt. Good luck!
  7. "Welcome! Why did you decide to join us?" "Internet poll."
  8. I just saw this on the recent posts. Congratulations! Smith is such a nice, pretty school! If you have any questions about Northampton / western Mass, feel free to PM me! I've been in the Amherst area for several years now.

  10. Done with midterms for the rest of my undergraduate career. It's so freeing! <3

  11. That stinks, I'm sorry to hear that! :/ I hope things go better for you next year. The good news is CS is a great field to pick up and drop work quickly. Some of my friends live off of contract work. There's definitely something you can do to improve your application for next round!
  12. Did you just say "nicer location"?! I love Providence!! I only know anything about Brown from a UG perspective, not a grad one. But I know that it's very progressive, considered the most liberal of the ivy's in particular, and everyone I know who went there (like 2 people lol) absolutely loved it. But grad experiences are unique! When in doubt choosing between programs, I say go with the more highly regarded POI, with some kind of weight based on alternatives (if there's only 1 amazing POI vs 2 good ones, go to the place with 2 good ones). Good luck! ^__^
  13. I messed up my 3-step plan. Oh well. At this point, I just have homeworks, finals, 1 project, and my jobs. Three weeks left of classes. So close! >_<
  14. I might do that for a two-week lease. It's $75 / night to move in early for the USC housing, so I have to find something...
  15. I'm actually hoping for that. I live in a boring (but pretty) little town in the middle of nowhere right now. Still, I live near enough to a lot of friends that they can visit me whenever. But they never do! I hope people use my apartment as a home base for visiting Hollywood and Disneyland. I'm counting on it. I'm asking them to! XD
  16. I only learned that professor =/= teacher like a year and a half ago. :x
  17. If you want a job in Massachusetts after, Stony Brook has that going for it. It's easier to interview people in-state than it is people out-of-state. There are a lot of jobs for CS students in eastern Mass. I mean a LOT.
  18. It is April 8th and I still haven't heard back. They didn't even acknowledge I withdrew my application! I wonder if I'll get in anyway? Haha XD
  19. Why are you interested in switching into CS without having much background? Is it the job prospects? Money? Sheer interest? Or some combination of these? If you can start coding, that'd be immensely helpful to your application. It's huge to see someone complete a coding project in their spare time. Even if it's a little buggy, having a github you can provide on your resume is huge to demonstrate competence. And if you get chance, take online courses (or community college courses) in: basic programming, data structures, and algoirthms. Some schools combine those last two. These are the backbone behind CS. Haha, maybe I'll be your TA when you get into USC. Good luck!
  20. I've seen quite a few posts on it. I'm one! (Kinda.) I think some people refer to "computational linguistics" as the study of linguistics using probability and computer science, whereas others treat it as an umbrella term for anything language-related in computing. I used to say I want to study "computational linguistics" when I always meant the latter; now I don't call it that. I'm interested in things like NLP and speech processing. These days, I think of these as AI and ML, not "computational linguistics".
  21. Finally got their response recently. Looks like a lot of people did!
  22. I'm just gonna leave this here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mathematical_jargon tl;dr: Almost every word in math is a regular english word gone crazy.
