Have you checked the results page to see if there were acceptances or rejections sent out already?

My last update: Got my last rejection today from my top choice. I emailed my POI thanking him for spending so much time on his responses to me and hoping that we still seem in touch since I plan to reapply. He responded saying that he tried really hard to get my application approved by the committee, but I didn't get accepted in the end. The potential silver lining is that he may be looking for a lab manager/research assistant next year and asked if I would be interested. I really like his research, so even though I wouldn't be his student, I would still get the chance to do some cool things. I'm still surprised he offered, but I'm not getting my hopes up since it's still uncertain. I hope it works out! Thank you everyone for your support throughout all this. I wish I could contribute to the sub-3.0 gpa acceptance thread, but maybe next time.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think it might be a little late, but next year I might briefly address it. I still plan on applying to UCI, which has 2 statements the want you to write: about why you would be a good fit (SOP) and one on your personal history. I'll definitely find a spot for it. This all assuming a miracle doesn't happen and I don't get in.

Heard back from 3/4 schools: rejected. I'm still waiting on my top choice with the professor who I've spoken to the most. I haven't spoken to him in 20 days since he told me they were making progress on admissions. I really want to email him and see what's up and if I should expect another rejection. I know I shouldn't but I just need to know if I should implement plan b. Thoughts?

I would try asking your POI if there's any particular part of your application that you should improve. If a PI really wants a student, they will try very hard to get them in. I don't think it's a bad idea to ask, but just be prepared in case you don't get an answer. -
So the magic 8 ball accurately predicted my two rejections. It's says I'll get in somewhere this app season, so I hope it's sticking to its word! Any one else with updates?

Probably because they still wanted to try. I'm probably going to receive all rejections this year but I found some really cool research and some PIs so I wanted to apply. Just because this person may not feel like they were a top candidate doesn't mean that they didn't put in a lot of effort in their applications. And even though the odds weren't great, they seem to have persevered. I don't understand when people don't even try and give up from the start.

At what point is it appropriate to check in with the department?
ssynny replied to BillyBillyBilly's topic in Waiting it Out
I would call them. Since you never received confirmation that your application was submitted, you really should find out if your application was actually reviewed. And if it was, you can ask if there was a decision made or when you can expect one. The phone call is much faster especially since you have an important question. Good luck! -
The expensive first house is so beautiful but I think the renovated house looks pretty good too. I do agree that they should add some variety to their designs. I'm still waiting for some funky/quirky design Also, no such thing as too much HGTV!

Actually the GRE subject tests are a really good indicator of how well you know a field. Some schools have easier classes than others and for large fields like chemistry and physics, the subject test is really helpful for puting everyone on the same playing field. They're tough! A good amount of atmospheric science programs encourage a chemistry subject test to help show you know your stuff. Unlike the general GRE, the subject tests are very useful. -
I'm actually wicked happy to see some HGTV love! They have such good shows! But you know you've watched house hunters too much when you start seeing repeats and remember which house they chose How could anyone not love the twins! They're really funny and I love the renovations they do. Oh yeah house hunters is totally staged, but I don't care haha. It's really interesting to find out what your money can buy you in different parts of the country.

Does it possible to ask for an extension after April 15th?
ssynny replied to jpg348413430's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
Okay definitely do not just accept and back out if you get funding at school B. It's actually considered extremely rude and can ruin funding for the person who would in theory take your spot. Certainly ask school A for an extension on the deadline. It's not uncommon for people to do that and they may be okay with it. At the same time, ask school B if they can let you know about funding sooner. You do not want to hurt your relationship with any schools in case you need to collaborate with them in the future. Call school B, thank them for their generous offer of admission, tell them that you are still considering the school, but would like a bit more time to make a final decision and ask for a 4-5 week extension. Good luck! -

I would call the admission department at UW and UMichigan and see if you were put on a waitlist without knowing. Since it's been so long and you know acceptances and rejections have gone out, you were probably wait listed. Doesn't hurt to ask them! OSU usually gets back to their students rather quickly, but I would not worry yet. You should probably wait at least 1.5-2 months before you expect a decision. Apply to Purdue only if you like the school! I'm not sure how important this scholarship is to you, but most PhDs are funded and you really wanna end up somewhere with research you like and a PI that's a good fit. That should come across in your personal statement. Your quantitative portion of the gre is good and so is your gpa, but your verbal and writing need work. As you mentioned, your gpa is a little difficult to look at because you are an international student. Schools then focus more on your gre. If you don't hear anything soon, it may not be a bad idea to take it again and boost your writing and verbal scores. If you're still looking for more schools, I would look at the national research council (NRC). Here's a link I found: http://m.chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124726/ Good luck! (And sorry this is late) -

Worst heart attack ever. Just received a call from an unknown caller. I didn't answer it in time but then I saw that they left me a message! I took a breath and listened to the call. It was the doctor telling me that my X-rays came in clear and I in fact did not fracture my carpals snowboarding. Sighhhhh is it bad that I was so disappointed it wasn't a grad school that I didn't care??

Who should I email??? Grad admissions or my POI?
ssynny replied to doingthings's topic in Waiting it Out
I was curious about this too. One of my POIs said results would "definitely" be out within a couple weeks. It's been 3..... If I were to contact the school, would I email him or the admissions head? (I'll probs just wait it out) -
Ahh I missed the doctor's visit to complete the charm! I actually have an appointment tomorrow, so I'll see if I get an acceptance then.

Im still waiting on UW for atmos. How many schools are you waiting on? -
So a lot of people have posted about hearing good news while sick. Well, I got sick this past weekend and FINALLY heard back from 2 schools... but they were both rejections. Maybe I wasn't sick enough?
