If you only skim how are you sure you're understanding/retaining the information Academicat?

One of the best things you can learn early on is how to know when to skim papers and when to read in depth. Not everything needs to be read in depth.

^^ I am learning how to do just that. It's definitely an acquired skill...

  2. I guess I'm ready. I keep wanting to do something before the first day. I have printed syllabi from previous years to give me an idea of how best to spend my time studying. I'm taking two classes which is six hours. Intro to the Counseling Profession and Counseling Theories and Techniques. Five books combined were required for my classes and I spent a total of $500.00 on books.
  3. Oh I can imagine this.
  4. Great perspective, thanks.
  5. Just printed the syllabi for my classes.

      How bad is it?

  6. I just did this thanks for the idea. Same professor same class and books this gives me an idea of how the flow of the class will be. I also know how to structure my reading time.
  7. Okay, this may be an odd question, but I would like to know. How many of you are enjoying your graduate school experience? Obviously, there is a ton of work! But are you enjoying the work? Do you feel like your training is worth it?
  8. No Assistantship yet. I have to start taking classes and see what opportunities are available. I have identified professors I would like to work with though. Thanks for the reassurance.
  9. Really antsy to get started. I did not have the luxury of moving to a new place. I'm a wife and mom of three so luckily I was accepted to a program relatively close. It does feel like I'm missing out on the whole grad school experience though. In the mean time, I am outlining schedules for my children, cooking tons of meals to fill my freezer and binge watching shows on Netflix.
  10. Cooking and organizing... My husband will be builiding shelves above my desk this weekend to give me shelf storage space for my books. sigh he's the best

      I think I'll keep him.

  11. geographyrocks That's good to know I will look around and see what I find.
  12. I have a laptop and a iPad. The iPad would be lighter to carry around and probably more ideal for taking notes but I don't see myself investing another $100 in a keyboard for the already over priced iPad.
  13. Trying Outlook because it syncs with my phone calendar. I also purchased a paper planner to see which I prefer this time around. I've been out of school for thirteen years, so I'm not sure if I will gravitate to more of a paper planner once school starts or if I will be fine with just the online calendar.
  14. 29 days...making the most of it.

I know the time is quickly approaching.

  15. Which comfy chair did you get from IKEA and what type of file organizer?
  16. Just checked my ticker and today I have only 30 days left of "freedom". I have got to get my home office together and decide if I need a file cabinet or not.
  17. A few days with my books and it's obvious the way I studied for undergrad is not going to work.

I'm in the same situation as you guys, although I've only been out of school for 3 years. So nervous!

The actual move gets me all excited (not least because I'm moving to a new country) but as soon as I realise I have to study - and study hard - the nervousness kicks in big time!

I'm waiting for my course syllabi to post so at least I can work on required chapters with a purpose. Right now I'm pre reading without knowing what to focus on. I think once those are in hand I will feel less nervous.

  18. avflinsch I do understand your concerns about pursuing your doctorate. I too would love to continue on but I think I need to get my masters underway first and then decide, how best I'm going to proceed after the three years is done.
  19. Recieved my offiical admittance letter today. Now I have got to find a way to get through reading this material. I think I can,,,I think I can...

Ha! I am still struggiling to get myself off the couch and away from the TV to focus on my reading. I just need a kick in the arse to jump start me. It still doesn't feel quite real yet. Even though I got my parking permit a few days ago.

I understand. I started reading and taking notes yesterday. I have lots of reading to do. All I want to do is sleep and watch tv.

  21. My husband and I did Financial Peace a class offered from Dave Ramsey. While we were not six figures in debt (not including our home) we definitely had a lot of debt to pay off. Almost seven years later we are debt free (still paying mortgage) but hope to have that paid off in fifteen years. My husband completed his MBA and I am starting my masters in a few weeks which we will be paying for. We live modestly, we are not trying to keep up with the Jones' and that attitude has helped us keep money in the bank. Good luck to you.
  22. Purchased my books today!

  23. How is everyone doing? I have thirty nine days before my first day of class. I am busy doing nothing really but thinking about all I need to do. Hhhmmm, this is not looking like a recipe for success.
  24. I can order my books! So excited.
