  1. Had classes tonight. I feel like I'm dying a slow death. I not sure why I feel this way exactly. But I have this strange feeling like I'm going to be overwhelmed and not be able to handle it all.
  2. Back home from a weekend getaway. Classes tonight, I'm prepared. Let's get it!

  3. This is an excellent question and I am still tweaking my system. Like you I was reading while note taking and it's taking a long time. Now I am using OneNote to take my notes and I create a page for each chapter. Before I read I create an outline for the chapter. Then after I read I go back and fill in what the book has in bold or my summary of what's important. I have not come up with a plan for peer review articles yet. I have downloaded both Mendeley and Zotero and have started researching for an upcoming paper I think I prefer Zotero I will make a final decision here soon as to which one I will keep. On another note I know it's not possible to read all the assigned books and articles from beginning to end, however that requires a mind shift on my part. Somehow I feel that if I don't read every word I'm cheating myself.
  4. If I could sum up my graduate school experience thus far I would say man this is a ton of reading.

That is a great idea jenste. I'm drowning over here in books and peer review journals.

Eventually you will read a 20 or so page journal article in 10-15 minutes. If you are reading the entire article you are not doing it right.

I wish I could get training on the skimming and how to decide what is important and what is not. I keep finding myself reading everything, instead of skimming because I am afraid I am going to miss something. Any tips?

  5. Good to hear that your first week went well. I do understand about first assignment jitters.

Spaghetti, red beans and rice, enchilada soup, fried rice, and stew

  7. Typing up my notes from my reading. Earlier this summer I couldn't decide if I was going to type or write my notes and so I tried both ways. After my first class my professor said save your notes for your comprehensive exam at the end of your program. Decision made typed notes will be easier to access four years from now.

  8. Good for you not dwelling on the things that are beyond your control. I bet you are so relieved that you got yourself set up prior to your program starting. I'm sure you are more productive because your energy is not divided. Poor guy stuck in another country, I bet he is worried sick. The importance your own mental health has been stressed in my program as well. Way to go with your TA-ship.
  9. First week of school and I feel that I'm not getting as much study time in as I would like. Managing three boys and all their activities and a hubby that works long days there is very little time for academic pursuits. Hhhmmm

Yes, I am going to talk to him and create a plan going forward.

Thankfully, I spent some time getting ahead in my reading but its all I can do to keep ahead and I have yet to start assignments so we need a better system in place now or else no one will be happy.

Yeah it's going to be tough to organize, but your family will be so proud of you. They want you to succeed - let them help you. :)

  10. Okay so here is my update. This semester I'm taking six hours (2 classes) and both are on Monday nights with the same professor. My program does not have an orientation but the course 501 intro to counseling acts as orientation as well as a preview to the counseling profession. I don't have a cohort so to speak because some people in my class have taken classes out of order. I live about an hour and a half from my university but they have a small commuter campus about 45 minutes from my house which is where I'm taking my classes this semester. So I feel disconnected from the big campus life, I will make it a point to go the campus for department events etc. I'm staying on top of my reading and trying to narrow down my first paper which is to discuss a facet of counseling. It can be an area that's well researched or not. Which has my head spinning. A little every day means very little when you don't know what you're doing. Lol, otherwise I'm feeling okay trying to do my best to keep my boys on schedule so I have time to study.
  11. So sorry dislocated elbow yikes
  12. So sorry to hear this, hoping when you get your meds they help and you feel better. Good luck next week with meet and greet, orientation and classes.
  13. I started this thread so we can keep up with one another and post periodically throughout the year how this year is going. Chime in!
  14. At least you will be well versed with the reading material and so that should make you feel better. I don't know that there is a way around the stress but focus on your studies a little at a time each day, which I should be doing instead of on the grad cafe.
  15. That's great NavyMom!
  16. ^^^My professor just said yesterday whatever topics were interested in write about them and then when its time for a thesis you already have a wealth of information.
  17. Came home last night from my first day of classes. Woke up this morning overwhelmed and wondering what in the world have I gotten myself into.

  18. I have a ton of writing assignments due. However I've chosen to start on the one that I think will be the hardest for me. If that makes sense. We need to use at least ten sources for the paper five of them must be from peer review journals. I feel in over my head and that was only the first class. Yikes.
  19. I would say a mix. All my nervous energy is gone thinking about the first day etc.etc. Now the hard work begins of staying on top of my reading and writing papers
  20. First day done, now it's turn up time.

  21. Just got home. My first day went well. In my theories and techniques class I have a theory review paper due almost every week. In my other class I have an 8 page paper due soon so I have to solidify my topic by the end of the week. So I started some research today on that. My nervous energy is gone, now it's turn up time.
  22. Alright first years let's rock it!

First day went well but I feel like I'm in over my head. It's comforting to hear that everyone feels that way. With the first day done my jitters are gone and now its time to plan out how I'm going to stay on top of the reading and writing. I'm grateful for the support here on the forum. It's good to be surrounded with people who know what I'm going through.
