PoliPixie reacted to Blake091 in 2014-15 Cycle for Canadian Political Science Programs
Just got accepted to the PhD Program at Ottawa! Which is surprising because I wasn't expecting to hear back from them for another month or so!

PoliPixie reacted to Blake091 in 2014-15 Cycle for Canadian Political Science Programs
Did anyone else here apply for the Poli Sci PhD program at Carleton? My status updated this morning to "recommended for assessment" so it appears that they're truckin' along with the applications haha

Apparently the Poli Sci and Econ departments work on a similar timeline, I just got my offer yesterday (after being told it's coming in an informal email a few days ago)

Western's second round offers are going out. I got in (with funding)! So now I have to determine if I want to uproot my family to attend a better school, or keep my acceptance at Brock and not add the extra stress of moving. This never gets easier, does it, lol.

PoliPixie reacted to TakeMyCoffeeBlack in Declined Offers, 2013-2014 Cycle
This thread is nothing new to the Gradcafe crew, and who cares if the only purpose it serves is to "mollify" those on a wait list? If nothing else, it provides more information than is otherwise available. And though you're certainly right, James, that the wait list is a backup to the regular acceptance:yield ratio, this doesn't meant that others won't find the information useful.

So everyone is not entitled to their opinions then? I thought I was entitled to mine! Damn. Now I am curious who is entitled to my opinion..

PoliPixie reacted to TorrentOfArdentPathos in Declined Offers, 2013-2014 Cycle
Of course everyone who is lucky enough to receive multiple offers should take any amount of time they need to adequately inform themselves before making a decision about what program to attend. The intention of my post was not to pressure anyone into rushing the difficult choices they face, and I fail to understand how this post is any more an example of "showing off" than celebrating acceptances in the cycle thread or listing acceptances in a signature.
That being said, I feel like the right thing to do is to tell a program as soon as you definitely know you are not going to accept their offer. This allows them to adjust their expectations of yield and inform waitlisters sooner rather than later (which can affect their ability to attend visiting weekend, and more importantly, their ability to have the time to fully consider all their options).

Hoo-boy, I think I voted down two or three of your posts, and because I disagree with them, as I do with the post you left above. A tad bit paranoid, there?
Relax, pal. It's just a message board. No need to get yourself in a big twist about it.
ETA: Just gave you a few more downvotes, just so you could feel better about it.

Well, the OP logged on asking for advice on which campuses might be more accommodating--not to be "concern-trolled" on how to lose weight. I'm sure that she knows where to find advice for weight loss. The internet is pretty big. And I've never met a fat person who was completely surprised by a) the fact that they were fat, or b. the fact that being fat isn't healthy. The world pretty much makes sure that they know this.

PoliPixie reacted to persimmony in Fat-Friendly Campuses?
Or you could uh... you know, try to lose weight? I don't know your situation at all and don't mean to be judgmental... but if you have to rest after every 20-30 paces you are definitely not getting the exercise you need and should be more concerned about becoming healthier than finding a campus that have seats with no armrests.
Edit: oh and to answer your original question...stay away from Colorado I guess. Lots of active health nuts here.

I second TakeruK, and politely suggest if this is a serious concern of yours, that you contact the school's disability services center just to get a feel for how slight mobility issues would play out on campus. If walking long distances is as much of a problem as you say it is, their disability services center should be able to guide you and help you with the walkability and accessibility of any given campus. They are probably much better equipped to give you suggestions than we are! Better to narrow down school choices based on actual studies/research/POIs first, and then contact the DRC before you apply.
I couldn't possibly name such campuses in any helpful way without knowing your field, and I suspect I'd only be able to link you to their DRC pages even then.

Stress does strange things to a person. And maybe let's not talk down to people on a clearly unserious post?

PoliPixie reacted to kb1234 in Got Owned -- no more ee PhD for me.. :(
Applying to top schools "feels" good but if you don't give yourself several low backups you would have dug your own hole. This is regardless of GPA, GRE or anything else that may affect the admissions. But for you, it's not too late. There are schools out there with their deadlines either still open or have rolling admissions. Keep at it.

^ Congrats on McGill.
Given my interest in Eastern Europe, the program probably wasn't that great of a fit for me compared to other schools. Also, i don't want to move lol.
Thanks! Although im actually entering an interdisciplinary MA rather than poli sci! But my focus will be on poli sci of course
