  1. I don't believe in an arbitrary-grade A. I believe in doing what top law schools believe in doing - survival of the fittest & Socrates method for humanities (to promote critical thinking). Have the students all take the same exam, homework, and final. I am not suggesting this for humanities. I am suggesting this for the STEM classes. Whoever gets the top grade in all, average-wise, gets the A then so on and so forth. Why should every person get an A if they score over a 90? It cheapens the value of getting the A. As an undergrad, I took a bunch of math courses with a couple of French students. Guess what? They trounced every single American student with EASE. Do you know how humiliating it is to sit there for 20 minutes and not be able to solve the problem but have the French students beat us in 10 minutes? I also had a professor in undergrad who didn't believe in giving out As, I had to work my ar*e off to get that A and I still only got a B+ but I am grateful for that class. I learned more in that class than I did in most of my undergrad class.
  2. I work for an e-commerce firm and it is my job to fulfill every order and to make sure that the people that buy the company's product are not hackers. The issue is that even though we go through every risk assessment possible, there is still a lot of credit card fraud. Long story short, my boss is getting sick of seeing all of the chargebacks so he is now threatening to take the money out of my paycheck because he thinks I am not being careful enough....forgetting the fact that they passed the risk assessment factor & that I have more tasks to do than to check out every order - btw, this was NOT part of the job description & he doesn't want to do it. Ergo, I am being over worked & I get screamed at by him & by our customers who feel that we're invading their privacy by instituting a risk assessment policy = asking for their state ID and/or passport. Nor am I being paid enough to be able to afford all of the chargebacks = _ =. I feel so much sympathy for you. Why isn't your job hiring more people? Are you planning on leaving soon, take a break before graduate school starts? It sounds like a sinking ship to be honest.
  3. Good luck carefree!! It isn't over until death comes knocking on your door...in which case, I hope you don't open that door. Did you message your admission officer? Say that you have been waiting 6 weeks and that you would hope for a reply by April 15th bc your other schools are asking. Reiterate how it is your top choice.
  4. When I asked my LoR for a strong recommendation letter, he said, "I am so glad that you are finally taking things seriously".
  5. Personally, I think you should retake the GRE. I would recommend you take the MAGROSH but I do not think having a low GPA & a low GRE will completely kill your chances. I know someone who got into the PhD Bio in CUNY with a subpar GPA (barely a 3.0), a horrible GRE score, and not a very enthusiastic SoP BUT what he did have was an amazing relationship with his LORs and his POI went to bat for him. So I think if you have work experience & great LoRs and a POI that is willing to go to bat for you, I think you may have a chance with CUNY - John Jay.
  6. Sorry guys but I would like to vent about my job. I HATE people who steal credit card information & I legitimately hate my job with a burning passion of a million suns. I hate it when someone asks you to go over your job description every single day for 1 year, who piles so much work on you that you become stressed out and get sick out of this, and thinks s/he is being generous by giving you Christmas off....and who refuses to give you a pay raise because they can't "afford it" BUT they can afford to give themselves a 30,000 bonus and make a 100,000 each. Btw, the team consists of 5 people. And if you tell your supervisor a good idea, s/he refuses to listen but the moment s/he hears the same advice from his/her cousin, it is like GOLD. Then you get harangue for not coming up with any good ideas. Seriously, credit card hackers, STOP stealing other people's information. It isn't cool and you wouldn't like it if someone did it to you. So stop doing it.
  7. YES. Before the supplementary form, I finally had the admissions is "reviewing" your application.
  8. I know...it is going to suck so much. I can not believe that I may have to wait another 6 weeks. I think I am back at the end of the queue. I was being reviewed until they found out I was missing a supplementary form...so now I am back to being "assessed". v _ v I need to know. I need to tell Princeton & KCL if I am going or not...
  9. Hello Dpgu800, I am also waiting on UCL & SciencePo. Have you heard back anything from UCL? Do you know when we might hear back from them? They sent me the supplementary forms, that I neglected to fill out, and now I am stuck back in purgatory again.
  10. Still waiting to hear back from 2 schools. One my fault for not including a supplementary questionnaire. The other one, they lied to me about rolling admissions > - >
  11. 1. Not to sound offensive but where do you find these guys?! 2. That says more about him than it does about you...
  12. I used to talk to ex-bf's POI all the time. And one day, a very odd conversation popped up between us - about how I would be a horrible professor. I would be a horrible professor because I don't believe in giving out As and I will have a tiered system per semester - 1 A for the whole class, 6 Bs, and the rest Cs to Ds and have all of the students compete against each other for the grade. Anyway, the POI just stared at me and he started laughing. He stated that there was no way I would ever get tenured or be kept that long because most school administrators do not see the students as people who are there to learn anymore, but more as "students who pay for the name of the school and to get straight As without trying". In essence, more students = more profit. The professors didn't agree with this but they had to do what the administrators said. After hearing this, I was like ....thank you for this, I will be homeschooling my children if I ever have any and I will send them to school in France - where thank god, the school administrators believe in public humiliation. F**k feel good, we shouldn't be coddling people and we shouldn't be treating children / students as friends.
  13. I am glad that I was able to crack you guys up . Thank you, thank you! Remember to always tip your baristas! Your tips are what keeps them off the pole. Don't worry, I am totally joining you guys in the freaking out department. In February, I wanted to apply to an IB internship for the summer in the UK and then land another internship for Sept. Everyone, including my advisor, was all, DON"T DO IT! WAIT UNTIL YOU GET INTO THE BLOODY COUNTRY BEFORE YOU PLAN OUT THE NEXT 4 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE!!!!! IT WILL BE EASY TO GET A JOB IN THE UK!! = _ = The one time in my life I decided to listen to other's people advice rather than ignore them as I normally do, I hear about this = _ =. FML. *head...meet wall. Wall, meet head.* Both of you will be very well acquainted with one another for the next year. I want to throw my spleen at them for even breathing in my direction now. > - > How vindictive do you guys think it would be for me to forward them this article and subtly thinking in my head, I TOLD YOU SO. I sincerely doubt the UK govt is going to ease up on work visa. The UK citizens are already complaining about how their graduate programs are predominately 45-55% filled with international students and taking up UK citizens' spots.
  14. It is probably even worse. I don't understand. International students in the US are given at least 6 months to land a job in the US after they graduate. This means that if we want to get a job in the UK, you better land an internship the moment it hits September. The moment it hits January, you better be lobbying HR for a job and / or looking for jobs that has the sponsorship, while at the same time, you have to get high marks and still do an internship or research. It is like they are trying to send the signal, Oh, you are good enough to apply and go to school here, and yes, we will charge you an exorbitant amount of money too. NEVERTHELESS, you are not good enough to work here. It is like being demoted from "girlfriend" status to f*ckbuddy status. It is pretty insulting and not to say the least, demoralizing.
  15. I don't believe in sleeping o - o. Honestly tho, I go after work (my job is 9 - 5) or I wake up early in the morning before work to hit the gym ( i live 45 minutes away from my gym & my job is about 30 minutes from my gym). And on days when I have classes, I hit the gym after class. On days when I hang out with my friends, I ask them schedule our hanging outs after 8:30 PM. There are also weekend times - just hang out with your friends after you work out. People waste time all the time. People don't really need to be glued to social media all the time.
  16. omp, no offense but your adviser is a t*atbeard
  17. *shrugs* They are pretty friendly. I didn't know KCL only accepted 30 students . Fail on my part at least. I think they are still accepting. I would send in an application anyway and to other schools before you converse with your professors. Have back up plans when you converse with your professors. Never hurts to apply. They didn't charge me an application fee and you will know in like 4 - 5 weeks max.
  18. You are quite welcome. My issue with the US schools is that, most masters in the US are not funded and they are EXPENSIVE. And you are not guaranteed a good job with WTO since everyone in DC went to the top schools. KCL & UCL are global brands. All the top firms in the US has heard of them so if you choose to go to one of those schools, it maybe easier to get a job. I know WTO participates in the KCL career fairs AND they are EXTREMELY active in helping their graduates find jobs. According to UK polls, KCL actually has the greatest in job placements. Please keep in mind that I am also incredibly biased *even tho I didn't not attend their but I have colleagues that are in the UK and they all preach KCL* UCL, on the other hand, if you want to go into IB banking & policy in the UK, I would go for. IB & policy recruits heavily in UCL but not as heavily in KCL. The issue is that their job placement isn't that great for internationals. But if you land an internship the moment you step into the UK and you find a place that is reputable, you may find a job the moment you graduate. Those are my two cents - what I got from thestudentroom forums
  19. Well, I would recommend KCL then. KCL has VERY strong ties to World Trade organization. I saw their placement and a lot of the former professors in political economy used to work for either international banking or world trade organizations. If you want to learn German, I would recommend UCL. You can take a language module in all of their courses. And I talked to their admissions officers' - for both KCL & UCL - and they were all so nice, it was scary. Too bad I never had any pleasant experiences with previous UCL graduates. Or you can apply to SciencePo. My apologies but I don't know anything about Asian Universities or I would give out recommendations. There are a lot of prestigious schools in Germany and their deadlines haven't passed yet. You can learn fluent German there in 2 years max . My best friend did and she had no prior knowledge of German before.
  20. haha Thanks PhDerp. He was an ex when we talked about this. It is quite fine but thank you for the support .
  21. Oh, I forgot to completely answer your question. There is a deadline, yes, but you should be very wary about it. UK deadlines aren't the same as US deadlines - where everyone has a fair game for the same amount of seats. Since it is rolling admissions, the earlier you apply the better chance you will get in. For instance, pretend that there are 20 seats available in LSE and they opened their registration on 01.11.2014 (November). By March, maybe 15 of those seats are taken. If you apply in May, there maybe 2 seats left and 20 people apply, LSE may not fill any of those seats because they want someone better so the rejects will hear a lot faster and if you are on the unofficial waitlist hell, you may have to wait until August to hear back from them. OR all of those seats are taken even though the deadline says August 2014 is the last date to apply. So I would highly recommend that you apply RIGHT away.
  22. I applied to it. They wrote that they will get back to you in 6 weeks but it is more like 8 weeks. Umm, it is more of a first come - first serve basis. The later you apply, the harder it is to get in. I would recommend King's College & UCL. They are both still open =). Good luck
  23. Uh, why don't you just ask that school to withdraw your application? It is almost the same thing...
  24. Ex-boyfriend who is a PhD candidate : You won't get into every school that you apply to but you will get in at least SOMEWHERE. Of course you will get somewhere, you are YOU. You are neurotic and personality-A. Now calm down and stop acting like a ragingb*tchface. Mom : I can not believe you are going for a Masters in that major. You don't need a masters to end up as a door man. You can get a BA in your major for that. Do you want to be homeless one day?!
  25. Not to detract from everyone's grief but I am a tad bit confused right now and would greatly appreciate whatever help I can get. I applied to UCL & SciencePo very late but relatively early compared to my UK friends. For SciencePo, I awoke this morning to an "admissible" email. It stated that they are sending my application in front of the jury committee. I thought my application has been under "review" since it has passed the initial 45 days. Does anyone have a timeline when I may hear back? I will need to ask for an extension from other schools that I got into. For UCL, for some odd reason, I got sent a supplementary application questionnaire. Did anyone have to fill one of these out when you applied to UCL? My application went from assessed ->reviewed -> assessed after I got told to fill one of these out. Would anyone know what timeline I can expect to hear back something?
