  1. I’ve been waitlisted somewhere. They never told me, I had to contact the director. They said that I should be notified in a few weeks if something changes...but...I’ve been admitted to other places. What should I do about the waitlist? Could I ask how far I am down on the list and then make a decision if I wanna commit somewhere else?
  2. I'm still waiting on USF (South Florida). Nothing!
  3. Chiming in: does it matter at all for MA programs? I'm assuming not because you wouldn't be applying to TT jobs with a MA degree..
  4. This is my 3rd year applying...don’t really feel like applying again unless it’s for a PhD program. Both programs are funded for the school year, so I don’t think that I’d need to take out loans for that. Theses at these programs are mandatory, so I’d have to do summer research if I’d want to graduate.
  5. So far I’ve been admitted to two (funded) MA programs (anthropology, sociocultural) that are both funded during the academic year by TA-ships and have tuition waived. BUT neither program has great support for summer thesis research. Program A has competitive $2,000 departmental research grants that MA students can apply for and program B doesn’t have any standard departmental funding unless a prof gets a grant that includes funding for a student researcher. $2000 isn’t much from school A. My research expenses wouldn’t be high, but I’d have travel, lodging, and food costs for thesis work. Program B suggested that I apply for either a Fulbright or an NSF, but.... those are hard to get. Mainly I don’t wanna go into (more) debt just so that I can do a MA thesis. This is stressing me out so much! Money!!! Ugh
  6. Thanks. I know what I should do then!
  7. Thanks for your response. The school where I got waitlisted for funding is not my first choice...I guess I just want some closure.
  8. I understand that funding is a delicate/sensitive issue for departments. I was waitlisted for funding at one of the schools that I applied to. I am on a ranked list and as funding becomes available, the department will move down the list. I don’t know my rank. I have a couple admits with funding and I’m wondering how I can ask about the likelihood of this program offering funding to me, in a way that is tactful. I just want them to be honest so that I can make a decision relatively soon. The longer I wait to decide, the crazier I will become.
  9. Ok, yeah. I’ll have to talk to someone about it because I can’t find the info online.
  10. From what I saw it looked like they combined fees and tuition into one sum.
  11. My potential advisor said that I’d lead breakout sessions in groups of 20
  12. Yes, that’s what the letter said officially. Idk what TAs teach in actuality.
  13. According to Google, Starkville is cheaper than Corvallis. The FTE at Starkville wasn’t given, it just says there’s a max of 20 hours/week. Idk what the fees are at OSU.
  14. I'm thinking that Starkville is the most viable option at this point. Am I mistaken? Stipend amount FTE Duration Renewable Tuition Fees Health coverage Corvallis, OR $1,131/month 0.3 18/19 Academic year Yes Waived 90% remitted Pay for separately Starkville, MS $1,200/month, plus $2500 one-time fellowship 18/19 Academic year Yes 71% waived (leaves fees) $2400/year fees Pay for separately College Park, MD Waitlisted for funding
  15. Ok, thanks. I have a “gut” feeling of where I should go, then.
  16. I’ve been admitted to Oregon State and Mississippi State for MA degrees in applied anthropology. Both programs are funded. Based on advisor, I’d pick MSU. Is either one of these programs definitively better than the other, or can I make a choice based on advisor? Funding situations are about equal, with MSU being in a cheaper location.
  17. I’ve been admitted to 3/4 programs that I applied to (still waiting to hear back from the 4th). 2/3 have offered funding and at one place I’m waitlisted for funding. Should I wait to give an answer to any of these programs? I’m not ready to commit to one yet because I still have to hear from the 4th place, but God Idk what I should be doing right now. At what point should I say “no” to the place where I was waitlisted for funding? When should I say no to the other programs? These are all MA programs btw.
  18. Fit for me means research fit first and foremost, but obviously personality fit is also important.
  19. Ok, yes I forgot to mention that I didn't apply to PhD programs this round, so that makes a difference.
  20. I'm thinking that fit/compatibility with your advisor is number 1 for making a decision, assuming that funding is similar. What do you think?
  21. Can this be pinned?
  22. I’ve been offered a funding package for a MA program in Corvallis, Oregon. Tuition is waived with a .30 FTE teaching assistantship (I think this is 12 hours/week) with a monthly stipend of $1,131 from September through June. The letter says that I’d receive a notification about assistantship renewal. Is this offer good? Fair? Poor?

  24. I'm traveling in Vietnam for Chinese New Year. Keeps my mind off things.
  25. Ok, I contacted the department coordinator. She said that a prof will contact me with funding details.
